Teaching Approaches
and
Strategies for Science
The biggest challenge before a teacher is
how to teach Science lessons
(other subjects also)
If this teaching – learning activities are
effective, students can reach the goals of
life by acquisition of knowledge, skills
and values in Science.

Introduction
Students who are 10-16 years of age, are looking
forward to the future. They are actually
preparing for college or technical school or
focusing on simply graduating. This age group
may be distracted by many outside activities
and if they are not interested in science, it will
be a challenge for the teachers to teach them
in the classroom
3/16/2022 5
Pranabjyoti Das
Some students have a belief that….
Either SCIENCE is difficult or BOREDOM
But, Why do they think so ????
3/16/2022 6
Pranabjyoti Das
There are lots of reasons. Some of them are…
1. Science is arrogant, so I don’t like science
2 Science is full of Mathematics. So I don’t like science.
3 Science is full of diagrams.
4 Science is full of formulae which are difficult to remember
5 Science is full of difficult terminologies.
6 Science is full of negativity. Scientists are always doubting things.
7 Science is mechanistic and cold, so I don’t like it.
8 The curriculum is boring.
9 The students have become worse at science.
10 Lack of examples in the classroom teaching
11 Lack of demonstration in the classroom.
12 The teaching is uninspiring.
So, what can be done now ???
3/16/2022 7
Pranabjyoti Das
Student engagement and understanding of the subject is given
more emphasis in today’s education system than spoon feeding
the facts.
Therefore, using black-boards or the typical lecture methods are
not adequate to teach science and other related subjects.
Many scholars and researchers have proposed advanced ideas
and they claim that virtual teaching scenarios or simulations can
help to build a better understanding of subjects amongst the
students.

Hands on Learning:
This is the best teaching method invented so far that involves the
active participation of students to experience scientific concepts
than to just have an audience view.
The use of low cost apparatus or home made models in the
classrooms will give the students a better opportunity to learn
science easily.
For example: Teachers can bring different
samples of soil, stones and other such materials
to the classroom while teaching the students
Rocks and Soil.
3/16/2022 9
Pranabjyoti Das
Story Telling:
Students love to hear stories and therefore, story telling is one of
the best ways to get their attention in class. Teacher can explain
the facts of biology or the laws of physics in the form of stories.
This is a mental organizer as human brains can remember stories
than just plain facts. Some teachers present the whole concept as
a story while some others use a story to open and end the session.
3/16/2022 10
Pranabjyoti Das
Be A Role Model
This innovative method is becoming an integral part of
science education as students can intellectually and
physically involve through activities while learning a new
concept.
Activities can be organized in classroom sessions where a
group of students can take the role of atoms or molecules
to study a chemical reaction or valency of atoms.
3/16/2022 11
Pranabjyoti Das
Visual clues:
The multi-sensory experiences improve their understanding
and memorisation. This includes drawings, diagrams, and
pictures to assist theory and setting up examples to show its
application side.
Using visual clues easily
supplements auditory
information and students
can easily connect better
with ideas.
3/16/2022 12
Pranabjyoti Das
Teach concepts, not facts…
Conceptual learning is an educational method that centers
on learning how to organize and categorize information.
Unlike more traditional learning models which concentrate
on the ability to recall specific facts, conceptual learning
focuses on understanding broader principles or ideas that
can later be applied to a variety of specific examples.
Thus a student can be made interested in science and
in other subjects too.
3/16/2022 13
Pranabjyoti Das
Improve the Image of Science
Children are natural scientists. They ask questions, pick
up sticks and bugs outside. They are curious about the
world around them. But as they get a bit older, many
kids gradually lose their interest in science.
They might see it as just another task at school,
something that doesn't apply to their lives. So a teacher
can remind the kids that science is everywhere and
most of these are fun for adults, too!
3/16/2022 14
Pranabjyoti Das
Motivate the Students
In order to keep the students interested in science , they must be
involved with the subject by third or fourth grade of their school
life. A teacher can nurture this attraction to science by making it
fun and interesting. We can do the followings for that….
1. Connecting Science to Students’ Everyday Life.
2. Exposing the Students to New Opportunities.
3. By involving the students in making models .
4. Teaching them to observe the things around.
5. By asking the students to teach each other.
6. Developing their confidence by asking easy questions.
7. Encouraging the students to think.

Teaching Approaches
And
Strategies for Science
The biggest challenge before a teacher is how to
teach Science lessons.
If this teaching – learning activities are effective,
students can reach the goals of life by acquisition
of knowledge, skills and values in Science.
3/16/2022 16
Pranabjyoti Das
Some of the important attitudes students will have
to learn while studying science are :
Curiosity
Honesty
Objectivity
Openness
Perseverance
Questioning or Doubt
Judgment
3/16/2022 17
Pranabjyoti Das
Besides These, A Teacher Should…..
1. Try To Recognize The Problems Faced By The Students
2. Ask Relevant Questions of The Topic
3. Encourage The Students To Do Some Activity
4. Provide Consistent Descriptions and Explanations
3/16/2022 18
Pranabjyoti Das
The 5-E Learning Cycle
A teacher must do the followings in the classroom…
1. Engage the students in topic
2. Explain the problem
3. Explore the idea of the student
4. Elaborate the findings
5. Evaluate
3/16/2022 19
Pranabjyoti Das
3/16/2022 20
Pranabjyoti Das
‘Engage’ The Students…
An Example:
Now, to keep the students engage in the subject matter the teacher
must ask the students to
“Compounds are classified into Acids, Bases, and Salts.
Some acids and bases are strong while some are weak.
Acids are sour, Bases are bitter and Table Salts are salty.”
1. Find out the Names of the compounds in their homes
which are Acids, Bases and Salts.
2. Find out the uses of those Acids, Bases and Salts in their Homes
3/16/2022 21
Pranabjyoti Das
Time is to “Explain”
Now the students must be asked to explain….
1. Why is the Lemon sour ?
2. Why is the Lemon Acidic?
3. Why is the Baking soda bitter?
4. Why is Baking soda Basic?
5. Why is the Table salt tastes salty?
This will help the students a better understanding
of the topic.
***However, if the students cannot reply, provide hints***
3/16/2022 22
Pranabjyoti Das
“Explore” the Idea of the students
Make a list of the compounds found in our homes as follows….
1. Curd
2. Tea
3. Lime water
4. Soup water
5. Milk
6. Lemon juice
And ask them to find
out the compounds
with acidic and basic
properties.
And see How they reply in case of Tea & Milk.
Explore the understanding of the students.
If needed Explain the reason why Milk & Tea are neither Acids nor Bases
3/16/2022 23
Pranabjyoti Das
Elaborate the “Issue”
From the previous list of the compounds students will easily find out that
Curd & Lemon Juice are Acidic
Lime water & Soup Water are Basic
But they may have problem in case of Tea & Milk
Here the Teacher has to Elaborate the topic explaining the
reason why Tea & Milk are neither Acids nor Bases.
3/16/2022 24
Pranabjyoti Das
Now it’s time to Evaluate
Evaluation plays an enormous role in the teaching-
learning process. It helps teachers and learners to improve
teaching and learning. Evaluation is a continuous process
and a periodic exercise. It helps in forming the values of
judgment, educational status and achievement of student.
Evaluation helps to measure the
validity and reliability of instruction.
Evaluation stimulates or encourages
the students to study.
Evaluation helps teachers to discover
the needs of the pupils.
3/16/2022 25
Pranabjyoti Das
3/16/2022 Pranabjyoti Das 26
Let us discus some examples
How would you apply yourself if you were asked by a student….
1. Why is the core of the earth hot ?
2. What is stone ?
3. What is environment ?
4. What is pollution ?
5. Why do we breathe ?
“KIDS DONOT REMEMBER WHAT YOU TRY TO TEACH THEM
THEY REMEMBER WHAT YOU ARE & HOW YOU REACT”
3/16/2022 Pranabjyoti Das 27
We are 100% sure……
You will respond well and reply with a
confident smile
Because… Those Who Know, They Do
But, Those Who Understand, They Teach.
3/16/2022 Pranabjyoti Das 28
3/16/2022 Pranabjyoti Das 29
“Teaching is a very noble
profession that shapes the
character, caliber and future
of an individual”
- A.P.J. Abdul Kalam

Science is Awesome

  • 1. 3/16/2022 Pranabjyoti Das 1 The Earth Rise In learning you will teach And in teaching you will learn
  • 2. 3/16/2022 Pranabjyoti Das 2 “Everything is theoretically impossible Until it is done”
  • 4. Teaching Approaches and Strategies for Science The biggest challenge before a teacher is how to teach Science lessons (other subjects also) If this teaching – learning activities are effective, students can reach the goals of life by acquisition of knowledge, skills and values in Science. 3/16/2022 4 Pranabjyoti Das
  • 5. Introduction Students who are 10-16 years of age, are looking forward to the future. They are actually preparing for college or technical school or focusing on simply graduating. This age group may be distracted by many outside activities and if they are not interested in science, it will be a challenge for the teachers to teach them in the classroom 3/16/2022 5 Pranabjyoti Das
  • 6. Some students have a belief that…. Either SCIENCE is difficult or BOREDOM But, Why do they think so ???? 3/16/2022 6 Pranabjyoti Das
  • 7. There are lots of reasons. Some of them are… 1. Science is arrogant, so I don’t like science 2 Science is full of Mathematics. So I don’t like science. 3 Science is full of diagrams. 4 Science is full of formulae which are difficult to remember 5 Science is full of difficult terminologies. 6 Science is full of negativity. Scientists are always doubting things. 7 Science is mechanistic and cold, so I don’t like it. 8 The curriculum is boring. 9 The students have become worse at science. 10 Lack of examples in the classroom teaching 11 Lack of demonstration in the classroom. 12 The teaching is uninspiring. So, what can be done now ??? 3/16/2022 7 Pranabjyoti Das
  • 8. Student engagement and understanding of the subject is given more emphasis in today’s education system than spoon feeding the facts. Therefore, using black-boards or the typical lecture methods are not adequate to teach science and other related subjects. Many scholars and researchers have proposed advanced ideas and they claim that virtual teaching scenarios or simulations can help to build a better understanding of subjects amongst the students. 3/16/2022 8 Pranabjyoti Das
  • 9. Hands on Learning: This is the best teaching method invented so far that involves the active participation of students to experience scientific concepts than to just have an audience view. The use of low cost apparatus or home made models in the classrooms will give the students a better opportunity to learn science easily. For example: Teachers can bring different samples of soil, stones and other such materials to the classroom while teaching the students Rocks and Soil. 3/16/2022 9 Pranabjyoti Das
  • 10. Story Telling: Students love to hear stories and therefore, story telling is one of the best ways to get their attention in class. Teacher can explain the facts of biology or the laws of physics in the form of stories. This is a mental organizer as human brains can remember stories than just plain facts. Some teachers present the whole concept as a story while some others use a story to open and end the session. 3/16/2022 10 Pranabjyoti Das
  • 11. Be A Role Model This innovative method is becoming an integral part of science education as students can intellectually and physically involve through activities while learning a new concept. Activities can be organized in classroom sessions where a group of students can take the role of atoms or molecules to study a chemical reaction or valency of atoms. 3/16/2022 11 Pranabjyoti Das
  • 12. Visual clues: The multi-sensory experiences improve their understanding and memorisation. This includes drawings, diagrams, and pictures to assist theory and setting up examples to show its application side. Using visual clues easily supplements auditory information and students can easily connect better with ideas. 3/16/2022 12 Pranabjyoti Das
  • 13. Teach concepts, not facts… Conceptual learning is an educational method that centers on learning how to organize and categorize information. Unlike more traditional learning models which concentrate on the ability to recall specific facts, conceptual learning focuses on understanding broader principles or ideas that can later be applied to a variety of specific examples. Thus a student can be made interested in science and in other subjects too. 3/16/2022 13 Pranabjyoti Das
  • 14. Improve the Image of Science Children are natural scientists. They ask questions, pick up sticks and bugs outside. They are curious about the world around them. But as they get a bit older, many kids gradually lose their interest in science. They might see it as just another task at school, something that doesn't apply to their lives. So a teacher can remind the kids that science is everywhere and most of these are fun for adults, too! 3/16/2022 14 Pranabjyoti Das
  • 15. Motivate the Students In order to keep the students interested in science , they must be involved with the subject by third or fourth grade of their school life. A teacher can nurture this attraction to science by making it fun and interesting. 3/16/2022 15 Pranabjyoti Das
  • 16. Teaching Approaches And Strategies for Science The biggest challenge before a teacher is how to teach Science lessons. If this teaching – learning activities are effective, students can reach the goals of life by acquisition of knowledge, skills and values in Science. 3/16/2022 16 Pranabjyoti Das
  • 17. Some of the important attitudes students will have to learn while studying science are : Curiosity Honesty Objectivity Openness Perseverance Questioning or Doubt Judgment 3/16/2022 17 Pranabjyoti Das
  • 18. Besides These, A Teacher Should….. 1. Try To Recognize The Problems Faced By The Students 2. Ask Relevant Questions of The Topic 3. Encourage The Students To Do Some Activity 4. Provide Consistent Descriptions and Explanations 3/16/2022 18 Pranabjyoti Das
  • 19. The 5-E Learning Cycle A teacher must do the followings in the classroom… 1. Engage the students in topic 2. Explain the problem 3. Explore the idea of the student 4. Elaborate the findings 5. Evaluate 3/16/2022 19 Pranabjyoti Das
  • 21. ‘Engage’ The Students… An Example: Now, to keep the students engage in the subject matter the teacher must ask the students to “Compounds are classified into Acids, Bases, and Salts. Some acids and bases are strong while some are weak. Acids are sour, Bases are bitter and Table Salts are salty.” 1. Find out the Names of the compounds in their homes which are Acids, Bases and Salts. 2. Find out the uses of those Acids, Bases and Salts in their Homes 3/16/2022 21 Pranabjyoti Das
  • 22. Time is to “Explain” Now the students must be asked to explain…. 1. Why is the Lemon sour ? 2. Why is the Lemon Acidic? 3. Why is the Baking soda bitter? 4. Why is Baking soda Basic? 5. Why is the Table salt tastes salty? This will help the students a better understanding of the topic. ***However, if the students cannot reply, provide hints*** 3/16/2022 22 Pranabjyoti Das
  • 23. “Explore” the Idea of the students Make a list of the compounds found in our homes as follows…. 1. Curd 2. Tea 3. Lime water 4. Soup water 5. Milk 6. Lemon juice And ask them to find out the compounds with acidic and basic properties. And see How they reply in case of Tea & Milk. Explore the understanding of the students. If needed Explain the reason why Milk & Tea are neither Acids nor Bases 3/16/2022 23 Pranabjyoti Das
  • 24. Elaborate the “Issue” From the previous list of the compounds students will easily find out that Curd & Lemon Juice are Acidic Lime water & Soup Water are Basic But they may have problem in case of Tea & Milk Here the Teacher has to Elaborate the topic explaining the reason why Tea & Milk are neither Acids nor Bases. 3/16/2022 24 Pranabjyoti Das
  • 25. Now it’s time to Evaluate Evaluation plays an enormous role in the teaching- learning process. It helps teachers and learners to improve teaching and learning. Evaluation is a continuous process and a periodic exercise. It helps in forming the values of judgment, educational status and achievement of student. Evaluation helps to measure the validity and reliability of instruction. Evaluation stimulates or encourages the students to study. Evaluation helps teachers to discover the needs of the pupils. 3/16/2022 25 Pranabjyoti Das
  • 26. 3/16/2022 Pranabjyoti Das 26 Let us discus some examples How would you apply yourself if you were asked by a student…. 1. Why is the core of the earth hot ? 2. What is stone ? 3. What is environment ? 4. What is pollution ? 5. Why do we breathe ? “KIDS DONOT REMEMBER WHAT YOU TRY TO TEACH THEM THEY REMEMBER WHAT YOU ARE & HOW YOU REACT”
  • 27. 3/16/2022 Pranabjyoti Das 27 We are 100% sure…… You will respond well and reply with a confident smile Because… Those Who Know, They Do But, Those Who Understand, They Teach.
  • 29. 3/16/2022 Pranabjyoti Das 29 “Teaching is a very noble profession that shapes the character, caliber and future of an individual” - A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Thank you all for being a Teacher !
  • 30. 3/16/2022 Pranabjyoti Das 30 Thank You !
