2. INTRODUCTION
Collaborate learning strategies support active student
participation in math lessons and allow teacher to assess the
developing proficieny.Thesestrategies are especially effective
during the mental math part ofan everyday mathematics lessons.
The term collaborative learning refers to an instructional
method in which students at various performance level ,work
together in small groups towards a common goal collaborative
learning is a very enriching process, both for teachers and
students.
Collaboration is more than co-operation the main aspect of
collaborative learning is effective interpersonal communication. It
refers to group members staying in contact with each other
regularly making sure that their communication is clear and to the
point.
. A teacher’s role is a collaborate group is that of a guide
rather than that of an authoritarior roles. In this method students
learn interpersonal or social skills, fact more involved feel more
dedicated, feel more confident, enjoy the class teach other become
independent learners and may become better citizens of the world.
COLLABORATE LEARNING
The term collaborate learning refers to an instruction
method in whole students at various performance levels, work
together in small group towards a common goal. The students
are responsible for one another learnig as well as their own.
Their the success of one student help other students to be
helpful.
Collaborate learning is a philosophy of teaching
collaborate learning is working together, building together
,learning together,changing together improving together.
According to vygotsky the students are capable of performing at
higher intellectual level when asked to work in collaborate
situations than when asked to work individually.According to
3. bruner, cooperative learning method improve problem solving
strategies because the students are confronted with different
interpretation of the given situation. Collaborative learning
medium provide students opportunities to analyse synthesize
and evaluate idea cooperatively.
A key element in collaborative learning is positive
independence .It is a situation in which students make an effort
to reach each other and learn from each other.
Students can often learn more from each other, and in
different ways, than they do from the teacher and may also
embrace the freedom they have been given to produce some
incredibly creative, high quality work . In order to introduce
collaborative learning the second thing. I’ve had to do has been to
teach the students how to work.
Successfully in groups initially I did this in discussion
Based work. By making it clear that at the end of the task in
question in every and any person in the group.Should be able to
Give me an answer the question or explain the method introducing
roles to group members can be useful of groups are finding it
difficult. If students retain a discipline or task achievement focus
then this can cause additional stress and anxiety as the students are
having to master these new metacoginitive other. If they take
different roles with in group they will each be able to focus on a
certain aspect during the teaching process and thus work more
effectively.
Another element of collaborative learning is effective
interpersonal communication, it refers to group members staying in
Contact with each other regularly. Making sure that their
communication is clear and to the point.
TEACHER’S ROLE IN COLLABORATIVE LEARNING
She should be a guide to her students. She should
Explain clearly the objective of collaborative learning. She should
also explain the roles with in the group and emphasies positive
inter independent. Collaborative teacher differes in that they invite
4. Students to set specific goals with in the frame work of what is
being taught, provide options for activities and assignment that
capture different student interest and goals and encourage students
To assess what they learn.
Collaborate teacher encourage students use of their own
knowledge ensure that students share their knowledge and their
learning strategies. Treat each other respectfully and focus on high
level of understanding. They help students to diverse opinions,
support knowledge claims with evidence, engage in critical and
creature thinking and participate in meaningful dialogue. Teacher
should establish a setting that promotes true discussion.
“Group work in mathematics is a tricky one. At times
students can see it as a “set-off ” and chaos without any real
learnig can ensure”.
STUDENTS ROLE IN COLLABORATIVE LEARNING
In collaborative learning , students learn by
themselves, learn more, learn interpersonal or social skills, feel
more involved, feel more dedicated, enjoy the class, teach each
other and became independent learners. Group work help the
students to better understanding the study material and stimulate
their thinking process. Shared responsibility reduces the anxiety
associated with problem solving
A key element of collaborative learning is positive
independence. It is a situation in which students make an effort to
teach each other and learn from each other. If they take different
roles with in the group, each will be able to focus in a certain
aspect during the learning process and thus each group is specially
assigned one part of the topic which they have to prepare very
thoroughly each group may be headed by a group leader who
should be different for different discussion. The students are asked
to be prepared for discussion on the second day or after two or
more days depending up on the class, time and nature of the topic
on the scheduled of topic assigned to them the leader initiate the
discussion. The other group put questions in this the group and ask
to explain certain ponts where needed. Blackboard summary is
5. also developed. After the the first group has finished, the second
group come for discussion. In this way,all group finish their parts
and the topic is completed.
When this method is followed, teacher should keep in
view the following points
1. The topic for discussion should involve some
thinking and interpretation on the part of pupils.
2. It should enhance academic skills, development
of social behaviours and classroom discipline
3. should assess the communication among the
groups and between students in a proper way.
ADVANTAGES
Represents of collaborative learning claim that active
exchange of ideas with in small groups not only increases interest
among participants. But also promotes critical thinking. The shared
learning gives students an opportunities to engage in discussion
take responsibility for their own learning and thus become critical
thinker.
The development and enhancement of critical thinking
skills through collaborative learning is one of the primary goals of
technology education.
Collaborative working provides in several opportunities
to interact practice, learn and to understand the need of working in
a group. It helps us get along well with in the group and also
pushes us to do a bigger effort in order to be all at the same quality
level.
Collaborative learning is also a good way to make
friends and to know other people. It is very productive.
Collaborative learning activites are good for students with
behavioural difficulties. Collaborative learning activities provide a
lot of visual clues, allow students to more the thinking around the
table and students are needed to synthesies information and
subsequently peers it on to their peers.
Collaborative learning makes teaching easier and more
pleasurable. Structured group work provides excellent
6. opportunities for teacher to listen in at a distance and record
language development. Concept development observe individual
learning styles and generally improve their running records active
listening can be observed.
DISADVANTAGES
1. Collaborative learning is applicable only to primary
and secondary levels. It is not applicable to college
level.
2. Collaborative activities take up too much time is they
take time to prepare both in the planning and the
trialing of the resource.
CERTAIN SPECIAL ADVANTAGES OF
COLLABORATIVE LEARNING
These features have certain special advantages of
collaborative learning.
1. PROVISION FOR DIVERSITY
Students learn to work with all types of people
mutual questioning and clarifications. Promote reflective thinking
among them such diverse discussions will help students to build up
better understanding of other culures.
2. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCE
When questions are raised different students find
answers in different ways depending on their social and cultural
background. So they learn to accept different perspectives of the
same issue.
3. DEVELOPMENT OF INTERPERSONAL RELATIONS
Sincerely mingling with colleagues develop social
skills which will be beneficial especially to those one who have
poor social skills.
7. 4. FEELING OF OWNERSHIP OF THE PROJECT
They get a feeling of ownership of the project
executedand will try to contribute for its successful completion
through critical thinking.
5. OPPURTUNITIES FOR PERSONAL FEEDBACK
It provides more opportunity for personal
feedback since the group is small every student can exchange ideas
and get feedback.
CONCLUSION
Studies on the two techniques of learning empirical as
well as theoretical are going on in various parts of the world. On
such study was regarding the number of member in a small group
that would give maximum result. Any how there is no doubt in
that all teachers should study these technique in detail and practice
the two strategies according to the learning situations involved.
