IT Project
This project simulates the Analysis and Planning needed to
provide IT services for a new building. The student
must submit a Project Plan based on the Project Requirements
and details below.
1. Create a Checklist that can be used to track the purchase,
installation, and testing of all equipment by
building location.
4. 2. Using Excel, create a project schedule to assist in completing
the project. The project schedule will
need the following columns: WBS; Task #; Task Action;
Duration; Predecessor; and Resources.
3. Unless you have access to Project Management software, use
MS Word or MS Powerpoint to create a
Gantt and a Pert chart to visually show the project progression.
Identify the Critical Path.
• NOTE: additional requirements are provided at the end of this
document.
Background: The building has been constructed, wired and is
ready for occupancy. All telephone cables, TV
cables and network cables are in place. Specialty rooms,
offices and administrative areas have wall ports that
provide access to the network and internet. Wireless routers are
installed throughout the building to provide
wireless access to the internet. Main entryways and corridors
have ports for TV hookup.
Project Requirements:
• Purchase, receive, store, and install ethernet cabling for all
ceiling mounted projectors and all
computer lab training computers.
o Test cabling immediately after installation, using IT laptops.
5. • Purchase, receive, store, setup, stage and deploy network
servers for the IT office.
• Purchase, receive, store, setup, stage and deploy new PCs.
o Test all systems to ensure corporate software are loaded
before deployment.
o Test all systems and ensure they can access the network once
deployed.
o Test all wireless systems and ensure they can access the
wireless routers.
• Purchase, receive, store, stage and deploy new Network
printers.
o Test all Printers to ensure users can print to them across the
network.
• Purchase, receive, store, stage and deploy wireless Pr ojectors.
o Test all Projectors to ensure desktops can access them via
direct cabling.
o Test all Project to ensure mobile laptops can access them
wirelessly.
• Receive, store, stage and deploy VOIP phones (VOIP phones
use the network to receive and generate
phone calls).
o Test all phones to ensure they function properly across the
network.
6. • Purchase, receive, store, stage and deploy.
o Test TVs to ensure they function properly.
The order of priority and occupancy is:
1. IT Office, IT Communication Closets and Common Area
Foyers & Hallways must be fully functional 30
days before any other location
2. Administrative Offices and Common Work Areas will open 7
days before remaining locations
3. Conference & Meeting Rooms will open 7 days before the
remaining locations
4. Offices
5. Specialty rooms.
Project Details: The new building includes the IT Office, IT
Communication Closets, Specialty rooms, Computer Labs,
Administrative Areas, Individual Offices, a Conference Room,
and a Public Meeting Room, and Common/Work Areas.
IT Office: will have
• 4 network servers
• 2 laptop computers
7. • 2 VOIP phones
IT Communications Closets: 2 communication closets will each
have
• 1 laptop computer for monitoring
• 1 VOIP phone
Specialty rooms: 10 specialty rooms will have
• a wireless ceiling-mounted Projector
• a desktop computer networked via a network port and directly
cabled to the Projector
Computer Labs: 2 computer labs will each have
• a wireless ceiling-mounted Projector
• a desktop computer networked via a network port and directly
cabled to the Projector
• 25 lab computers networked via a network port for training
use
• a printer networked via a network port
• a VOIP phone
Administrative Areas: 2 administrative areas will each have
• 4 workstations, each with a desktop computer, networked via a
network port
8. • a LAN printer networked via a network port
• a VOIP phone for each of the 4 workstations
Individual Offices: 40 offices will each have
• a desktop computer networked via a network port
• a VOIP phone
1st Floor Conference Room. The first floor conference room
has
• a wireless ceiling-mounted Projector
• connectivity networked from the VOIP phone for laptop use
• a VOIP phone
1st Floor Meeting Room. The first floor meeting room has
• a wireless ceiling-mounted Projector
• A computer networked via the lectern VOIP phone
• 2 VOIP phones (one near the lectern and the other wall
mounted at the entrance
Common Areas: 4 Common areas and 4 Work areas have
Common areas: the main hallway runs the distance of the
building on each floor with a midpoint foyer that breaks
9. the building into 4 distinct areas. Each main hallways has
• a wireless access point installed every 50 feet; one WAP must
support the entire midpoint foyer
• a VOIP phone installed in the midpoint foyer on each of the 2
floors
• a VOIP phone installed in the middle of the hallway in each
distinct unit (4 total)
Work Areas: there are 4 work areas strategically located in the 4
distinct areas. Each area has
• a LAN printer networked via the VOIP phone
• a VOIP phone
Personnel Assignments
PC Specialist - Equipment purchase and PC support is
responsible for
o purchase, setup and installation of new computers and
Corporate software
o purchase of all Projectors and TVs
o work with Network Specialist to ensure network access is
available on all computers
Network Specialist - Telecomm support is responsible for
o setup and installation of all VOIP phones, ethernet cabling
10. and networks
o work with PC Specialist to ensure network access is available
on all computers
AV Specialist - A/V and all other IT requirements is responsible
for
o Installation of all new A/V projectors
o Installation of TVs in the 1st and 2nd floor foyer
Take time to think about how the work of the Specialists will be
conducted. The order of priority and occupancy is 1)
IT Office, IT Communication Closets and Common Area Foyers
& Hallways must be fully functional 30 days before any
other location; 2) Administrative Offices and Common Work
Areas will open 7 days before remaining locations; 3)
Conference & Meeting Rooms will open 7 days before the
remaining locations; 4) Offices; 5) Specialty rooms. The PC
Specialist, Network Specialist and AV Specialist can be
completing tasks concurrently and it is quite possible that one
specialist will have to wait while another specialist completes a
task.
The schedule must have at least 100 tasks and a milestone for
each event (purchase, receive, store, setup, stage,
11. deploy and install). Each resource must be purchased
separately.
When creating the schedule, use your best guess in determining
Duration.
Task Actions must start with a verb. Milestones do not start
with verbs and have a zero duration.
Resources must include the IT Personnel completing the task
but may include other people or equipment resources
that are involved. Do not go overboard (i.e. a Computer implies
all of its components).
When creating Predecessors, it is not necessary to include a task
that are already predecessors of other included tasks
(i.e. consider the following tasks: 1: Order food, 2: Eat food, 3:
Cleanup. The predecessor for 2 is 1. The predecessor for
3 is 2. The predecessor for 3 is also 1 but since it was also a
predecessor of 2, it is implied.
The WBS should be completed once the schedule is in its final
version.
The Gantt and Pert charts for this project would be extensive so:
- At least 1 Gant charts is required, and it must include at
least 10 tasks.
- At least 1 Pert chart is required and must show tasks, from
different specialists, that are performed concurrently.
Remember that Specialists might be working on tasks
12. concurrently (at the same time as another specialist) and those
tasks may lead to an event being completed. This will be
identified in the Pert chart.
