Ingredients of a
Talcum Powder
Arpit
B.Sc. Life Sciences
Talcum Powder is the most commonly used toilet
powder preparations. Talcum Powder, As the name
implies, it consists mainly of Talc, also mixed with other
ingredients.
Ingredients in the Talcum Powder-
1. Talc.
2. CaCO₃ and MgCO₃
3. Zinc Stearate.
4. Zinc Oxide.
5. Kaolin.
6. Silica.
7. Starch.
8. Boric Acid.
9. Perfume(Optional)
Role of Each Ingredients
 Talc, which is the main component, is composed of
hydrated magnesium silicate i.e, Mg3Si4O10(OH)2
 It is a soft, versatile mineral which can be used in
cosmetic formulations for its moisture absorption
and as a filler.
 It gives a smooth appearance to the skin and other
ingredeints added along with talc help in imparting a
compostition perfect for skin application.
CaCo3 or MgCO3 added in the formulation act as drying
agents and pH adjusters.
Other ingredients like Zinc Stearate and Zinc Oxide help
in imparting water repellant, astringent and anti bacterial
properties to the talcum powder formulations. Kaolin and
Zinc Stearate are known to increase the adhesiveness
of the talcum powder formulation.
Calamine powder is a milled form of Zinc Oxide.
Kaolin is a hydrated Aluminium silicate with absorbent
properties.
Kaolin, also being a high density compound is used in
talcum powder formulations to adjust fluffiness.
Kaolin and Zinc Stearate are known to increase the
adhesiveness of the talcum powder formulation.
The trio of Talc, Calamine and Kaolin is superb in their
absorption powers.
Starch is added because of its good absorptive
properties and a good covering power which helps in
imparting smooth texture to the skin.
Perfumes are added to enchance the market value
and sales.
Thank You
