Welcome to science
class
Grade VIII
Presented by
Aqsa Jabbar
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, students should be
able to:
define biotechnology
know about the type of biotechnology
describe the uses of biotechnology
know about the importance of microbes in
biotechnology
 Bio means life
technology means sum
of any techniques,
skills and process
which are beneficial to
mankind
What is
biotechnology?
branch of biology
A technology which uses micro
organisms to make new products or
to modify old products for the
mankind.
Types of biotechnology
Classical biotechnology
Fermentation
food products(yogurt, cheese and bread
formation)
Modern biotechnology
use genetic information in organism
Genetic engineering
Fermentation
It is the conversion of complex chemical
substance into simple chemical substance by
the action of micro organisms to make new
products.
yeast
use to make yogurt
bacteria
Mould (fungi)
use to make bread
use to make cheese
‘Fermentation is considered as
classical biotechnology’
I Wonder
Q.Why does milk turn into curd
more quickly when left at room
temperature than when in a
refrigerator?
 In the refrigerator the bacteria
'lactobacillus', which turns the milk into
curd, remains inactive as the bacteria are
active in normal or medium-high
temperature. And when the milk is left in
the open, the bacteria remain active and
set the milk into curd faster.
Amazing fact:
Adding yeast to the dough before it is baked
makes bread softer.
The yeast uses some of the nutrients in the dough
for respiration .
This releases bubbles of carbon dioxide gas which
make the bread soft and sponge.
I Wonder
Q. Why do we use microbes in
biotechnology?
It is easy to grow microbes in large quantities
as they grow quickly when given the right
temperature and food supply.
Microbe cells are simple in structure so it
makes it easier for scientist to genetically
engineered new microbes for specific work.
Benefits of biotechnology
Recapitulation
Biotechnology
Fermentation
applications of fermentation
uses of biotechnology
importance of microbes
Homework:
Do recall Question 1,2,& 3 on notebook
Recall Q 1: What are microbes? Explain your answer with
examples.
Recall Q 2: What does biotechnology mean? What are the
oldest examples of biotechnology.
Recall Q 3: How could biotechnology help solve the
world’s food shortage problems?
