1. Narrative essay
The product that I will be focusing on will be the teaser trailer from the production. The teaser
trailer from the production enigma was a thriller, the narrative was based on a university student
who losses his parents in a car crash and then his brother is kidnapped forcing him to go and find
him. We opted for an open narrative, leaving it open meant we could get are audience on the
edge and more eager to find out more about the rest of the movie. Making it more appealing to
are target audience.
Narrative refers to how the story and plot are both portrayed to the audience.
The theory Roland Barthes reflects on how major and minor engima codes to generate and
maintain audience interest this is reflected in are teaser trailer as we aim to satisfy the needs of
our target audience. we use an open narrative in order to ensure that we leave the audience
thinking and wondering about what's going to happen next. Having an open narrative suits the
conventions of a teaser trailer perfectly. The aim of the teaser trailer is to give an insight to the
audience about what the teaser trailer is meant to be about, therefore by having an open narrative
you leave it open for discussion and interpretation as well as not giving to much away which
could have a negative effect on the success of your campaign and production as it could lead to
people not being interested in full movie if they have already seen key details in the teaser trailer.
Throughout the teaser trailer various information regarding both the plot and the story is given
away to the audience. For instance two key pieces of information that the audience Findout is
that there parents are involved in a car crash and die this is extremely important and significant
information as well as also finding out that George's younger brother joey goes missing. Those
two moments are major moments in the movie and teaser trailer. This allows the audience to
develop their own opinion on how the story may end or develop. This shows typical genre
conventions of a thriller, the genre will then have the ability to attract an audience and entice
people to come and watch the full movie. This will have the ability to appeal to audiences due to
the fact that the storyline is unique as George the main character has to go and find his younger
brother in the process he has to complete these tasks which will allow him to get to his brother.
Including tasks was unique and acted as a selling point for are movie and campaign. In the teaser
trailer there are instances of hermeneutic codes moments of the movie that have not been fully
explained, this is done so that parts of the trailer remain a mystery to the viewer. Proairtic codes
are also in use, this code is good for developing tension in a clip we used in the teaser trailer we
used it when George the main character answers a phone call from an unknown number. That
moment in the teaser trailer allowed for tension to develop this was significant as it meant that it
got the audience a bit more involved with the trailer and created interest.
The teaser trailer does a good job in serving the purpose of a teaser trailer, it does a good job in
enticing an audience. By using codes that engage them and involve them more in the teaser
trailer.
