1. I believe that Total Film is the right magazine to advertise my film. This is because it
advertises major Blockbuster (Gladiator, Inception) films as well as the lower budget
films that aren’t said to do well by the critics. There are many different types of
advertising found in this magazine; there are teaser/film posters, reviews, articles about
the film (interviews with actors, how it was made etc). The film posters are a good way
of advertising as they show key features that they know will appeal to their target
audience. For example, the Pirates of the Caribbean film posters have an image of
Johnny Depp. This is because he is the main character in the film and possibly the
biggest star in the film. The reviews help to advertise the film as they give more
information about what the film is like. Usually a more detailed synopsis is given in a
film review that will interest the audience as they are curious and want to know what
the film is about before they go and watch it. Also, films reviews give a more technical
aspect to the film. There are usually some examples of how the micro and macro
elements work in this film to give the effect that the director wanted. Film reviews are
essential for advertising a film, as they are what grab the audience’s attention. As they
are usually written by film critics they audience like to read them to get a professionals
opinion on the film to see whether the critics believe it is any good. Based on the critic’s
opinion the audience will decide whether they want to see it or not. The other articles
that are found in this film give the target audience more information about things that
go on behind the camera. This is important for advertising a film as it gives the audience
information about the production of the film. This is important for the target audience to
know as they may judge a film by who was involved in making it.
Breakdown is a seat of the edge thriller that is bound to send a chill down the spine of
the audience. With the main focus of the film being about mental illnesses it is quite
touching in places, and brings to light just how serious it can be. The use of micro
elements work well to highlight this and bring it to the forefront of the film. The editing
changes within the film to represent the main characters state of mind. It changes from
long takes to short, jumpy cuts that have filters placed over them to visually change
them. The pace changes varying on what the character is doing and feeling. The clever
use of mise-en-scene subtly feeds the audience clues about the character and her
involvement in the string of crimes that are going on around her. The small props have
narrative significance and help to create enigmas that the audience will want answered.
The conventional way in which this film was made means that the effectiveness of the
mysteries in it will keep the audience on the edge of their seats wanting the film to hurry
up and reveal the answers to the enigmas that have been set up.
