Abstract
Education is the foundation if the nation, providing knowledge to generation for
consolidate their future, when we talk about the methodology in teaching then some
objective are designed to analyze the effect of traditional and modern methodology in
English subject. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the use of traditional and
modern methodology in English subject. The present study shows that the traditional
methodology is commonly used like lecture method, instead of modern methodology
for data collection used interview for school teacher of PC Urdu use as well random
sampling of class (1). During research teacher stated that they used lecture method
because have no recourses center and observed self that students were passive in that
class, have no interest , just doing time pass. Observed that teacher had no trainings.
For this I used modern methodologies where used co-operative learning for change
the student’s concepts and way of learning. I got best result all students were
interested and given feedback. This misconception can be change by utilizing modern
technique and recourses on low. Cost and no. cost material.
Key Words: Effect, Methodology, Modern, Traditional

1. Backgroundof the study
I decided to write a thesis on Effect of Traditional vs. Modern methodologies in
English subject .I am a prospective teacher and during my practicum I observed many
thing because of this observation I decided to do my research and an experiment,
which I will describe in my thesis.
Education is vital to the pace of the social, political and economic development of any
nation, so effective teaching is very essential. Effective teaching is important because
teaching is based on helping children progress from one level to another in a more
sociable interactive environment and to get the approach right to get students to be
independent learners (Muijus and Reynolds, 2005)
The world becomes more educated day by day and now days the education is a basic
need & Right of an every individual person when we talk about education so we can
say English Plays an important Part to communicate and it is international language.
There are two methodologies in our school which we used to teach the students. The
traditional methodology and the modern methodology in much school we follow the
traditional methodologies for teaching English. But now a day’s it’s not a proper way
to teach student and it’s not a complete way to achieve the goals of the study.
Education is a progressive process, going hand in hand with human development in
general as well as with its cultural, technological and social progress; education
should be as much coherent and updated as possible, it should be based on effective
curricula and be conveyed by people with deep scientific, pedagogical,
methodological and ethical knowledge. In teaching the teacher realizes that the
effective teaching process is lifelong and we can say the endless process of learning.
The teacher have freedom to chose the method for enhancing the students’ abilities
and their skills through teaching because teacher is a source of knowledge and the
time of the students is priceless so it is very important to use effective method for
providing quality of knowledge the teacher have to compare, analyze and evaluate
methods they are using to motivate students and realize a qualitative teaching. The
modern methodology becomes more successful to teach student in a proper way and
to build their own practical skills and their critical thinking. These days the teacher
have the great possibilities in what a teacher can do with his or her students, in terms
of teaching methods, seating arrangement, visual aids, demonstration etc.

1.1 Method
‘Method’. In the definitions of this term, Webster’s Third New International
Dictionary often uses expressions such as “a procedure or process for attaining” a
goal or “a systematic procedure, technique” or “a set of rules” very often related to a
science or art (Method). In agreement with this Webster’s definition, Hunkis claims
that “methods have form and consistency,” and later on draws attention to the form by
stating that methods “have definite steps or stages and sub-behaviors that are recurrent
and applicable to various subject matters” (qtd. in Henson 3). As Henson states, some
examples of methods are: a lecture, a simulation game, a case study, or an inquiry. 9
For the purposes of this thesis, we can consider the method to be a well staged
procedure to teach new language.
1.2 Traditional Methodology.
Traditional Methodology is a method in which the teacher used to teach with the old
way likes lecture method. And use of chalk and blackboards. Traditional method of
teaching is when a teacher directs students to learn through memorization and
recitation techniques thereby not developing their critical thinking problem solving
and decision making skills (Sunal et al 1994) it is also known as conventional
education, is still widely used in schools.
Lecture method is a method in which the teacher gave the lecture about the topic and
then he/she gave the task to read the topic. This method is mostly used in teaching
English and other subject, but this method is not good and effective to teach English
properly traditional teaching means the teaching with textbooks its emphasize on
basic skills in traditional teaching the assessment is simply occurs through testing of
the lesson.
The traditional methods of teaching are like:
1. Teacher centered
2. Chalk and talk methods
3. Teacher as a mode of knowledge not a supportive facilitator
4. Lack of cooperative learning
5. Emphasize on examination nit focus on the concept of understanding
Effectof TraditionalVSModern methodology in English Subject
3
1.3 Modern Methodology
The modern methodology is a method in which the teacher used variety of methods
like, Activity based method; Project based method, Audio lingual, Grammar
translation method, using questioning, explaining, demonstration and collaboration
techniques. In this methodology the teacher used different and effective ways of
teaching in English subject. Through this method the student take more interest in
learning and because of these method the practical skills of the students will be
enhance. The modern methodology relies on the hands on activity and cooperative
learning and the assessment is based on the activities.
In term of how the student learnt in a well manner according to the needs of our
society children are getting more and more involved with modern methodologies
which are interactive and effective as well. This study will give more insight in how
both traditional and modern methodologies effect on the English subject. Learning
outcomes by comparing modern and traditional methodologies I will observe the
effective ways of learning with low-cost and no-cost material.
Modern methods of teaching are like:
1. Advanced technology based
2. Activity based
3. Inquiry based learning
4. Linking curriculum with life
5. Differentiate instruction
6. Flipped classroom
7. Problem based learning
8. Develop critical thinking
9. Focus on the conceptual understanding
1.4 Statement of the problem
During my teaching practice I observed that the students were not enjoy learning they
were bored not paying attention and the way of teaching English is not so effective
the teacher used the traditional methodologies in teaching English They have lack of
resources that’s why the a student can’t pay attention in learning and because of that
the student have shyness in responding in their practical skills of speaking is not so
good they feel shyness in speaking during lesson. In my observation the problem is
Effectof TraditionalVSModern methodology in English Subject
4
that the students are not achieved their target of learning and the level of their
understanding is not so high according to the needs of their outcomes regarding
English subject... Students faced many problems in learning and understanding in
English subject and the use of methodologies in English is not so good the students
have so much difficulty in learning English they have fear in learning sometimes the
use of methodologies is not appropriate so the students didn’t pay their full attention
in learning and understanding After this observation I decided to do research on this
problem
1.5 Purpose of the study
The purpose of the study is to analyze the effect of traditional and modern
methodology in English subject and to analyze which methodology is good and
effective to enhance the students learning and develop their practical skills.
The study is particularly;
i. Concerned with the teaching method effectiveness.
ii. Concerned with examining influences of teaching method (Traditional and
Modern) and determining which of the teaching methods is more effective than the
other.
1.6 Objectives
1 To analyze the effect of Traditional Vs Modern methodologies used in classroom.
2 To evaluate the new methodologies used for the improvement of students
learning.
1.7 Research Question;-
1 How to evaluate new methodologies used for the improvement of students learning?
2 What are the various ways for applying the traditional and modern methodologies in
the classroom?
1.8 Significance
The importance of this study to develop better learning and understanding with
different methodology to understand the subject English easily

2.Review literature
2.1 Theoretical Framework
The theoretical framework design the concepts in research purposes relations between
them and discuss the connecting theory based on a literature review Into theoretical
framework we define the theory which is based on the research problem in theoretical
framework we develop our action of the research on the basis of our literature review
and also find the gap of the area of working
In research there are followed theories on traditional vs. modern methodologies in
English The first theory was (Behaviorism) the behaviorism focus on the behaviors of
the pupil in learning and responding to certain stimuli that when repeated can be
evaluated quantified an eventually control for the individual it is focused on the
cognitive process of the mind on 1900s the (Ivan Pavlov) Experiments with dogs
food an audible extremely through this experiment that dog learned to associate
feeding food time on the Bell ringing(BF skinner an Edward Thorndike skinner)
work on the operant conditioning which emphasize on both positive and negative
learning of the students according to their behaviour and they focus on the
reinforcement of the every individual to learn new behaviour
In 1983 (Howard Gardner) first outlined his theory in his book frames of mind the
theory of multiple intelligence where he said that the all people have different IQ level
in kind of intelligence every people have different interest level he proposed it
intelligence of the people.
in (1956 Benjamin bloom’s) the famous
psychologist established a taxonomy of learning
which is based on the development of intellectual
skills problem solving and enhancement of higher
order skills the taxonomy based on the six
educational objectives.
Effectof TraditionalVSModern methodology in English Subject
6
These three theories integrate in my research topic the theory based on teaching and
learning all preferred the modern way of the teaching through modern mythology that
student understand easily and because the traditional methodology is not so effective
that’s why the student face problem in lending if we use modern methodologies
according to the need of their children so the lesson went well now a days the
teaching is focused on the new methods and technologies because our world grow day
by day and 21st century needs the teaching is fully based on the modern
methodologies The primitive people used to teach the primitive Methodist according
to their knowledge and their skills now the signs or the research has been white in all
fields of the methodologies of teaching at this moment the lecture never dropped the
best impact on the teaching of the students for the longest time because that teaching
was no doubt temporary It could never give the impacts of the teaching for the longest
time now the world has changed people have brought some new changes against the
old teaching It will be a quiet awkward an unjustified to say to compare the modern

methodologies Vic traditional methodologies. modern and fast research almost in
every field has brought the unbelievable revolutionary changes so it is the main and
crystal evidence to prove old methodologies of teaching in my humble opinion I
reached the conclusion that science with its research has been bringing the new and
modern ways and channels with its all possible approaches The students with the
latest modern technologies cannot be compared in learning any of the traditional
methodologies.
3.ResearchMethodology
It is the study of particular concern or problem it is scientific method which is reliable
and valid According to the American sociology Earl Robert Babbie “research is a
systematic inquiry to describe, explain, predict, and control the observed phenomena.
3.1 Qualitative Method.
This approach is the process of inquiry it helps to understand the problem of the
research it is a method in which we collect our data through conversation.
3.2 Research approach
The researcher use Deductive approach in their research this approach means
reasoning from the particular to the general.
3.3 Research design
Research design in this study Is reconnaissance , interview of the School Teacher

students want learning but because of the lack of recourses it shown that learning is
27% learning.
Effective
This is necessary theme for learning if the teaching is not so effective the learning is
less the students not so much excited about learning they feel bored with the chalk
and board method that’s why it shown that the effectiveness is 13% during the
classroom learning.
Use of Traditional Methodology
This theme is especial because mostly our teaching is based on traditional ways of
learning and the and the traditional methodology the respondent give information

  • 6. vi Abstract Education is the foundation if the nation, providing knowledge to generation for consolidate their future, when we talk about the methodology in teaching then some objective are designed to analyze the effect of traditional and modern methodology in English subject. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the use of traditional and modern methodology in English subject. The present study shows that the traditional methodology is commonly used like lecture method, instead of modern methodology for data collection used interview for school teacher of PC Urdu use as well random sampling of class (1). During research teacher stated that they used lecture method because have no recourses center and observed self that students were passive in that class, have no interest , just doing time pass. Observed that teacher had no trainings. For this I used modern methodologies where used co-operative learning for change the student’s concepts and way of learning. I got best result all students were interested and given feedback. This misconception can be change by utilizing modern technique and recourses on low. Cost and no. cost material. Key Words: Effect, Methodology, Modern, Traditional
  • 7. Effectof TraditionalVSModern methodology in English Subject 1 1. Backgroundof the study I decided to write a thesis on Effect of Traditional vs. Modern methodologies in English subject .I am a prospective teacher and during my practicum I observed many thing because of this observation I decided to do my research and an experiment, which I will describe in my thesis. Education is vital to the pace of the social, political and economic development of any nation, so effective teaching is very essential. Effective teaching is important because teaching is based on helping children progress from one level to another in a more sociable interactive environment and to get the approach right to get students to be independent learners (Muijus and Reynolds, 2005) The world becomes more educated day by day and now days the education is a basic need & Right of an every individual person when we talk about education so we can say English Plays an important Part to communicate and it is international language. There are two methodologies in our school which we used to teach the students. The traditional methodology and the modern methodology in much school we follow the traditional methodologies for teaching English. But now a day’s it’s not a proper way to teach student and it’s not a complete way to achieve the goals of the study. Education is a progressive process, going hand in hand with human development in general as well as with its cultural, technological and social progress; education should be as much coherent and updated as possible, it should be based on effective curricula and be conveyed by people with deep scientific, pedagogical, methodological and ethical knowledge. In teaching the teacher realizes that the effective teaching process is lifelong and we can say the endless process of learning. The teacher have freedom to chose the method for enhancing the students’ abilities and their skills through teaching because teacher is a source of knowledge and the time of the students is priceless so it is very important to use effective method for providing quality of knowledge the teacher have to compare, analyze and evaluate methods they are using to motivate students and realize a qualitative teaching. The modern methodology becomes more successful to teach student in a proper way and to build their own practical skills and their critical thinking. These days the teacher have the great possibilities in what a teacher can do with his or her students, in terms of teaching methods, seating arrangement, visual aids, demonstration etc.
  • 8. Effectof TraditionalVSModern methodology in English Subject 2 1.1 Method ‘Method’. In the definitions of this term, Webster’s Third New International Dictionary often uses expressions such as “a procedure or process for attaining” a goal or “a systematic procedure, technique” or “a set of rules” very often related to a science or art (Method). In agreement with this Webster’s definition, Hunkis claims that “methods have form and consistency,” and later on draws attention to the form by stating that methods “have definite steps or stages and sub-behaviors that are recurrent and applicable to various subject matters” (qtd. in Henson 3). As Henson states, some examples of methods are: a lecture, a simulation game, a case study, or an inquiry. 9 For the purposes of this thesis, we can consider the method to be a well staged procedure to teach new language. 1.2 Traditional Methodology. Traditional Methodology is a method in which the teacher used to teach with the old way likes lecture method. And use of chalk and blackboards. Traditional method of teaching is when a teacher directs students to learn through memorization and recitation techniques thereby not developing their critical thinking problem solving and decision making skills (Sunal et al 1994) it is also known as conventional education, is still widely used in schools. Lecture method is a method in which the teacher gave the lecture about the topic and then he/she gave the task to read the topic. This method is mostly used in teaching English and other subject, but this method is not good and effective to teach English properly traditional teaching means the teaching with textbooks its emphasize on basic skills in traditional teaching the assessment is simply occurs through testing of the lesson. The traditional methods of teaching are like: 1. Teacher centered 2. Chalk and talk methods 3. Teacher as a mode of knowledge not a supportive facilitator 4. Lack of cooperative learning 5. Emphasize on examination nit focus on the concept of understanding
  • 9. Effectof TraditionalVSModern methodology in English Subject 3 1.3 Modern Methodology The modern methodology is a method in which the teacher used variety of methods like, Activity based method; Project based method, Audio lingual, Grammar translation method, using questioning, explaining, demonstration and collaboration techniques. In this methodology the teacher used different and effective ways of teaching in English subject. Through this method the student take more interest in learning and because of these method the practical skills of the students will be enhance. The modern methodology relies on the hands on activity and cooperative learning and the assessment is based on the activities. In term of how the student learnt in a well manner according to the needs of our society children are getting more and more involved with modern methodologies which are interactive and effective as well. This study will give more insight in how both traditional and modern methodologies effect on the English subject. Learning outcomes by comparing modern and traditional methodologies I will observe the effective ways of learning with low-cost and no-cost material. Modern methods of teaching are like: 1. Advanced technology based 2. Activity based 3. Inquiry based learning 4. Linking curriculum with life 5. Differentiate instruction 6. Flipped classroom 7. Problem based learning 8. Develop critical thinking 9. Focus on the conceptual understanding 1.4 Statement of the problem During my teaching practice I observed that the students were not enjoy learning they were bored not paying attention and the way of teaching English is not so effective the teacher used the traditional methodologies in teaching English They have lack of resources that’s why the a student can’t pay attention in learning and because of that the student have shyness in responding in their practical skills of speaking is not so good they feel shyness in speaking during lesson. In my observation the problem is

Students faced many problems in learning and understanding in English subject and the use of methodologies in English is not so good the students have so much difficulty in learning English they have fear in learning sometimes the use of methodologies is not appropriate so the students didn’t pay their full attention in learning and understanding After this observation I decided to do research on this problem 1.5 Purpose of the study The purpose of the study is to analyze the effect of traditional and modern methodology in English subject and to analyze which methodology is good and effective to enhance the students learning and develop their practical skills. The study is particularly; i. Concerned with the teaching method effectiveness. ii. Concerned with examining influences of teaching method (Traditional and Modern) and determining which of the teaching methods is more effective than the other. 1.6 Objectives 1 To analyze the effect of Traditional Vs Modern methodologies used in classroom. 2 To evaluate the new methodologies used for the improvement of students learning. 1.7 Research Question;- 1 How to evaluate new methodologies used for the improvement of students learning? 2 What are the various ways for applying the traditional and modern methodologies in the classroom? 1.8 Significance The importance of this study to develop better learning and understanding with different methodology to understand the subject English easily
