1. HOW DID YOU ATTRACT /
ADDRESS YOUR AUDIENCE?
QUESTION 5
2. When it came to addressing my audience I wanted to take inspiration from the
magazines I had highly researched, Q magazine and NME for the reason that they
both had a similar target audience to that of mine. Both of these magazines use
informal language and effective techniques in order to attract their audiences to the
magazines. They also incorporated a number of features that I wanted to put into my
magazine. The target age for Q magazine is 15 ~ 24 year olds and the target age for
NME is 15 ~ 25 year olds with their average being 23 year olds.
My chosen target audience is 15 ~ 25 year olds and therefore, using both Q and NME
would be effective. I knew that my product would have to be eye~catching and
modern in order to attract the audience I wanted as the magazine industry is a
competitive place. I believe that I portrayed this throughout my magazines pages.

4. I firstly decided on using a bold masthead to make my magazine stand out when
sat on the shelf in a shop. The bright colour scheme of red, black and white
attracts the readers eyes to the magazine, I therefore used the bright red colour to
highlight the header and footer of the magazine, the text in the pug, the pull
quote and the key words that would attract my audience in the sell lines. My
magazine offers many opportunities for the reader to engage and become
involved such as in the quiz’s advertised in the header bar and sell lines. My target
audience are the type of age to take part in a quiz for ’the chance to win a ski trip’
as many people of the ages 20 – 25 go travelling. These interesting sell lines may
help to attract the reader to the rest of the pages. The artist in my subsidiary
image is seen wearing the latest fashion as this appeals to my target audience who
are interested in fashion. To go along side this I used the sell line ‘Stacey Rees is
back with more fashion tips’ to appeal to my reader also. My main image of ’Huw’
is also seen wearing the latest fashion and is staring straight at the lens to help
attract the readers into picking up the magazine. I used a bold red border on my
subsidiary image to draw the readers attention to it.

6. I again used the bright red to add that ‘pop’ of colour to the header and footer
bars to attract my reader to the page. I also used the red to outline my images
with the aim of, again to attract my reader into the page. In the right hand side
of the footer bar, I added the text ‘Subscribe at www.Vinyl.com’ to give a
sense of involvement and loyalty towards the magazine. I split my contents up
into three different sections, these being; ‘features’, ‘regulars’ and ‘reviews’ as
this is easy on the eye and could make finding the page the reader wants a lot
easier. In one piece of text from my ‘features’ section I put ‘letting us in on
some gossip’ as my audience are the age to be interested in celebrity gossip
and this would attract them to go to the corresponding page. Another line
from my ’features’ section is ‘backstage at Lottie’s first gig..’ as my target
audience are the type of people to go to festivals and gigs. To accompany this
I also added ‘January’s essential gig list’ in my ‘regulars’ section. I included
lots of quiz’s and the text ‘your questions get answered in this months Q & A’
to encourage the readers involvement in the magazine. With these features, it
adds another dimension to the magazine.

8. Like on my front cover and contents page, I again used the colour scheme of
red, whiteand black, I used the red colour on my graphics, splitting the page up
and on my quotation. Using the red bought the readers attention to these
features and the quote appeals to my target audience as they mainly are above
the legal drinking age. I again used the text ‘Subscribe at www.Vinyl.com’ to
give the sense of involvement and loyalty towards the magazine. I chose the
title ‘The pop star that disappeared because it is celebrity gossip, like my target
audience are interested in, this would attract them into reading the article. In
the article I also included the release dates of Huw’s new album which could
appeal to his fans or people who want to find out more about his music. You
can see Huw dressed in the latest fashion again from the image on the right
page of the spread.
