2. Outline
• Introduction
• Activity 1: testing different type of ice
• Activity 2: hunting for composite materials
• Activity 3: exploring the difference between
strength and stiffness
• Activity 4: testing a foam composite for strength and
stiffness
• Design Project designing a fishing pole
• Product Idea : Changing heat energy to electric
energy
3. composites
• Materials made up of two or more
visibly distinct substances are the
materials features in this module.
4. Activity 1: testing different type of ice
• We tested 3 different type of ice :
• First: plan ice
• Second: ice + tissue
• Third: ice + anything(straw + paper + cotton + sooth pack)
• Then we put them in the freezer and make them ice
5. Activity 2: hunting for composite
materials
• We searched about composite materials and
there are our result
Composite material
name
We use it for
Glass fiber swimming pools and
car manufacturing
Carbon fiber Wind power
generators
6. Activity 3: exploring the difference between
strength and stiffness
• We take different materials and compare it
and those are the result
Object name Strength flexibility
Wood 4 4
Plastic rod 3 2
Nylon 2 1
pasta 5 5
Iron rood 1 3
7. Activity 4: testing a foam composite
for strength and stiffness
A. Plain foam beam.
B. One side paper: a foam beam with think paper glued to the bottom.
C. Two sides paper: a foam beam with thick paper glued to both top and
bottom.
D. Disjoint: a foam beam with paper glued to the toped bottom; paper
glued to bottom has a disjoint-a gap in the middle of the beam where
the paper is not glued down well.
8. Result of activity 4
Mass (grams) Plain foam Pone side paper Two sides paper

200 10.5 10.5 10.5
400 11.5 10.8 11

800 13.5 12 11.5
1000 14 12.2 12
1200 14 12.5
9. design project: designing a fishing
pole
• we design a fishing pole and we used many
different type of materials
The Fishing pole should be:
- Flexible
- Strong
- Lightweight
10. Final Project:
(Title: changing heat energy to electric energy)
• Introduction and Rationale:
• Our project is changing heat power to electric
power.
• For example when we drink a coffee we can use the
heat of the cup to charge our mobile.
• It will be a nice idea if we work on it.
• Aim of the work (objectives):
• to save energy.
• To charge the mobile in an emergency situation.
• You can use any type of heat to make it useful.
11. Hypothesis:
•
Hypothesis of the study :
1 How can we benefit the society to save energy?
2 How can we change the heat energy to electric energy?

Many thanks to my teachers, school and AL-Bairaq team from
Center for Advanced Materials (CAM), Qatar University for
supporting us during our journey with a AL-Bairaq.
Also, I would like to thank the sponsors UNESCO, Qatar National
Commission, Ras Gas, Maersk and Shell.
