Empress Zita of Bourbon-Parma was born in 1882 in Italy. She became the last Empress of Austria, Queen of Hungary, and Queen of Bohemia after marrying Archduke Charles of Austria in 1911. After World War I, the Hapsburgs were deposed when Austria was divided into separate states. Charles and Zita went into exile in Switzerland and Portugal, and Charles died in 1922. Zita is remembered as the last ruler of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire who experienced a dramatic fall from power and wealth.
