Q2: How Effective Is the Combination of Your Main Product and Ancillary
Tasks?
Firstly, I have used similar colours and tones for consistency
between the trailer, poster and magazine. The trailer is based
on a hidden evil and the majority of the shots are set in
darkness creating a gloomy environment for the poster and
magazine. I have used colours such as black, red and grey with
a hint of white so that they remain similar to the poster.
Furthermore, the colours used had some meaning for further
analysis for example; the poster and magazine are
predominantly black and white because this references the plot
of many horror movies; while the situation the characters are in
seem dark and potent, there is still a light at the end of the
tunnel; a signifier of hope. The consistent use of colour was
intended so that my audience would gain more recognition
towards the movie.
Moreover, I have tried to maintain continuity with the layout of
the poster and magazine for example; the heading is located in
the third third of the product, this means that theoretically the
audience would remember a design and who produced it; this
would potentially increase the publicity the trailer could
receive. Furthermore, I tried to keep the poster and magazine
conventional in terms of layout, font size and colour. This is
because conventional methods have proven effective for
organisations such as; Empire. For the poster there are two
titles; the magazine and the movie, both titles are in large font
sizes for readability and are located at the top and the centre
bottom of the product. For the magazine, the magazine heading
'Sentient' is located at the top of the magazine but behind the
main image, this is for identification in the sense; the main
image is the focal point of the magazine and not the magazines
ownership.
Another factor between the poster and magazine that I tried to
pull off was; I tried to keep the centre of the poster and
magazine less cluttered so the main image appears more

prominent. As both are promoting "Unwritten", I wanted the
promotion to be clear and intriguing. This leads to the next
effective factor which was the fact of the both the poster and
magazines's main image is an evil entity located at the centre,
this was to establish that this entity is the main focus of the
trailer.
On the other hand, I did lack consistency in terms of font colour
because the font on the poster is red/black whereas the
magazine font is white/red/yellow. However, I believe
individually this is more effective than keeping consistency
because magazine designers are clever in their designs for
example; key words like 'exclusive' and 'plus' would be a larger
font size and be a different colour to the text that follows. This
is a promotional tactic which makes certain elements more
intently visible to the human eye.
The poster is also conventional in comparison to other posters
because it has two contact details through social media for
example; my poster has two links; to the official Facebook page
and to the official Twitter page. The reason this is the case Is
because of society; modern technologies and generations have
allowed us to communicate through social networking sites
such as Facebook and Twitter but it has also proven to be a
state of the art marketing tool just waiting for extreme
exploitation. The magazine is similar to professional magazines
because it has a barcode located at the bottom-right corner for
easier accessibility and it has a price and issue number. These
elements were included into the magazine for professionalism
and because Empire magazine was the main inspiration.
In conclusion, I believe that my trailer, poster and magazine are
effectively combined through consistency of colour, positioning
and conventions. All three products in my opinion have
promoted the same idea through different mediums. However
my only setback was the colour differences between the poster
and the magazine's text.
