1. WhenplanningourASMedia project,we have realisedhow muchthoughtandplanninggoesinto
creatinga production.AsI am determinedtobe as successful aspossiblewithinthissubjectand
because of thisI am be writinga detailedanalysisof the openingsequence of the popularaction
movie ‘FastFive’,the fifthinstalmentof the FastandFuriousseries.Iwill be writingthisopening
sequence analysisasitwill helpgive me amore detailedunderstandingof whatisexpectedof me
and myteam whenitcomesto executingourfinal ASproject.
Thisis the firstshotof the movie, itisalsothe last scene of the forthmovie inthe series, thisgives
the shot a lotof Importance asnot onlydoesitshow one of the maincharacters straightawayit also
recapson an extremelyimportantpartof the series’plotasthismustbe a keypart of thischaracters
story. The fact thatthis isa close-upalsoshowsusthatwhateverishappeninginthe scene is
extremelyimportantto the characteras close-upsare oftenusedtoshow the character’semotion
and facial expressions. The Mise-En-Sceneinthisframe isveryinterestingasitshowsusthat the
character iseithergoingintoprisonorjustcomingout as he iswearing,whatlookslike,anorange
jumpsuit.Anotheraspectof Mise-en-Sceneiscolourandlightingandinthis frame, itlooksas
thoughthe lightingisquite dark,thiscouldbe foreshadowingthe character’sfate withinprison.The
colourof thisframe isa grey-bluecolour,personallyIwouldassociate thiscolourwithnegativity,
thiscouldbe symbolisingthe situation thatthischaracterhasfoundhimself in.
2. Withinthis frame of thisopeningsequence there isanextreme longshotof a coach inthe middle of
the desert. Thishelpsgive the audience the impressionthatthe charactersare isolated. The
atmosphere isveryquiet, thiscouldhave beendone fordramaticeffecttoallow the audienceto
know Justlike the 'Fade to black'effectthathas beenusedbetweensome of the openingshotshas
alsobeenusedfordramaticeffecttobuild tension. The Mise-En-Scene inthisframe isinterestingas
there are no props otherthat the coach and the branch that isinthe centre of the frame, these
couldbe there to alsohelp the ideaof isolationandtranquillity. However, the positioningof the
branch and coach isinterestingasthe coachis slightlyhiddenbythe branch, thiscouldalsobe
showingthe audience thatthe charactersare isolated andhiddenaway.
Dramatic musicbeginstoplaywhenthree carsappear inthe frame, there is alsothe soundsof the
engine. These soundeffects couldhave beenusedtohelpshow the audience the importance of
these charactersand cars. Thiscouldbe because theyare associatedwiththe othercharacter which
was seeninthe previousframe. The factthatthe camerazooms incloserto the coach showsthat
the character is lesshelpless. Inthis frame, youcansee a longshot lookingovertothree cars from
the back corner of the coach. This frame will helpthe audience buildsuspenseandexcitementasit
3. seemsclearthatthese cars are goingto the coach. Thismay alsobe the start of an action scene asit
isverypopularfor actionmoviestohave an actionscene at the beginningatthe start of the movie.
