1. Fragmented – Film Poster
For my planning and research into the poster I
researched several posters that had been
professionally created to see how I needed to
follow the conventions. I decided to set a target
for myself to incorporate many of my own ideas
from additional research to make it as authentic
and to a high quality as possible.
I started this process by taking a look at posters
that closely relate to our themes and genres of
our intended trailer narrative and looked at their
codes and conventions, what colours they used,
where their texts were and what they tried to
focus on the most from the types of camera
angles that they used. This was all shown in my
first sketched draft in the planning stage for my
own poster ensuring I followed the codes and
conventions to guarantee I was able to catch the
attention of the target audience, similar to those
of the same genre as the narrative for the trailer.
Although i looked at following the codes and
conventions, i wanted to challenge these for the
genre by showing a bit of a love interest over a
strong action sense that the traditional posters
tend to follow to give my own unique touch to it.
2. Inspirational Posters
These two posters were taken from the two films
that were the biggest inspirations of our groups
narrative idea, American assassin and John
Wick. I found these two particularly inspirational
as they both focus on a narrative that revolves
around one person and with a purpose of some
form of revenge. I liked the idea of having just the
main protagonist, similar to john wick but also
wanted to use the fiancée from our trailer as well,
which is where I turned to American Assassin, it
portrays both the protagonist and a secondary
character that plays a big part, almost
overshadowing him, like a trainer, a reason to
fight. I stole this idea and instead had the main
character of our trailer being flooded by his
fiancées memory, having her as a reason to fight
for revenge. As for billing block and other text
and further meaning, I didn't take any more ideas
from these posters, layout, multi platform media
forms and colours came from other promotional
devices.
3. Further Inspiration:
Similarly to john wick and American Assassin, I
found that American Sniper had the same
general convention of portraying a lonesome
soldier but instead this poster had a much deeper
meaning to it, much similar to the narrative for my
trailer. I needed to some how recreate this style
for my trailers narrative, to creating objects that
get the audience to question its meaning, for
instance, where is he? Why is he unarmed and
not prepared for a fight? To capture this I kept
the background of my main image, to start
questions as to why they are there, then I kept in
the handgun seen from the protagonist to
question why he has it, or is he going to kill the
female in the poster?
It was this poster that helped with the decision of
where i wanted to place most of my text on the
page, for example, keeping the billing block at
the bottom like most conventional posters and
having a tag line at the bottom also as it catches
the eyes sight of the audience, this helped to
separate any dead space that came up from the
main image, especially at the bottom of the
image as I had to move the image up to allow
people to see the gun
4. Within my product I believe there are several
areas that challenge the standard conventions of
a real life main poster. The biggest one for
example I can find would be that in most action
films, the poster focuses on the main character
looking aggressive with a weapon in hand to
display aggression, pursuit and determination,
which is seen in the posters I researched, like
John Wick. In mine, I felt like my main image
really challenged this as it displays the reason
why he is fighting over his anger and
determination, instead it displays the love he is
fighting for.
Another area I think challenges real conventions
is my overall layout, I purposely left the middle of
the poster clear and had all my text to the edges
of the page to ensure that all the focus was on
the image, I also chose to use a ghostly white
overlay instead of the conventional dark style to
really get the audience gripped on the idea that
the protagonist is fighting for his dead loved one,
whilst leaving the gun in there to hint at a later
narrative and other themes.
How does my product challenge conventions of real media products?
5. Overall, I believe that I have planned and
created quite an effective promotional poster
that follows the codes and conventions of real
media products as well as challenging these
as well which allows for my final product to be
as imaginative as possible compared to those
of similar genres posters.
By developing and using these conventions to
fit my narrative and the themes I had planned,
I think that I have made a successful product
and I am overly happy with the final outcome.
