2. How did you address/attract your
audience?
Visuals were my main formula when trying to entice my audience.
Colour: I have appealed my target audience by keeping my color's
of red, black and white (other colors used) conventional and
suitable for the genre my magazine centers on. The reason why I
chose to keep my colours conventional and conformist to the
usual ‘XXL, Vibe, Noisy’ 3 colour scheme is because my audience
will build a sense of familiarity and my 3 color scheme will tell
them the genre of music my magazine is based on which might
entice them further. The connotations between the contrast of
light and dark colors in my front cover, dps and contents page
represents the two sides of Hip-hop, artists and the music
industry. One side which is constantly publicized to the whole
world whereas the other is tried to kept hidden. I tried to make
my colours contrast as much as possible to make the cover look
sharp and colours that suited to the models costumethus giving
my cover an alluring look.
3. Font
I have chosen to use mainly bold and sans-serif fonts so that the
information in my magazine is clear, easy to read and so my audience are
not deterred by a font which may be hard to understand/read. I also used
fonts such a ’Alternate gothic italic’ when writing an artist quote so that
its easier for the reader to recognise the text as a quote.
The ‘DRILLINOS’ masthead is visually appealing due to its size and light
colour. It stands out on my front cover and is the largest font in my whole
media product. This was done so that even before the reader opens the
magazine he/she will immediately know the magazine’s name also
creating a sense of recognition and familiarity.
4. Mode of address
Throughout the magazine, the audience is addressed through my Q&A Double page
spread, front cover teasers, language, quizzes and also promotion party adverts.
Some of the language used in the magazine is informal/slang and appeals to the younger
audiences as they can relate to this sort of dialect. Furthermore, in my Dps, the artist
consistently refers to the audiences support and love they show to the hip-hop world and
he also praises them in their commitment to help improve his music through their
feedback and suggestions. This is another distinctive aspect of my magazine, the bond
between artists and fans. The party adverts also gives the audience a chance to engage
with the magazine as it is directly addressing and inviting them to an event.
5. Images
On my contents page, the photography I had taken reflected the focus on
costume and not setting. I wanted to get an image of my model as he was about
to be interviewed in a professional studio with the soft box behind him to diffuse
the excess light. I used dark clothing for my models as this is the conventional
colour for my genre and connotes the artists eccentricity and ‘dark side’.The
model’s pose is also directly related to the main story lines in the front cover of
‘Power, Paper and Pain’.The power is reflected by the fact that he looks down at
the camera suggesting dominance and authority and the wealth is shown through
his diamond ring and designer top and watch.
