2. • For my music magazine ND, I presented my product in different
ways to attract a specific niche audience. To establish the wants and
desires of a typical audience for my magazine I aimed my product at
an ‘Indie’ group of people who would be interested in certain types
of music that I could include, which consisted of a target group of
15-30 year olds.
• In order to gain the interest of my demographic on different social
networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, I approached them
by advertising bands and certain singers by posting videos from
Youtube and photos on specific group pages I had made, to
encourage the attention of my demographic. This resulted in them
retweeting and sharing these posts which ultimately allowed for
more people to gain knowledge of my magazine and be interested
in reading it.
3. • My magazine itself I found would attract more people if it presented typical
conventions of an Indie music magazine, for example after researching multiple
magazines such as NME, Vibe and Spin it was conventional for them to present an
interview with well-known singer or band in order for them to gain perspective on
their lives but also feel a stronger connection to them. I felt that this was one of
the main attractions for a music magazine, but also the reason for their popularity
and ongoing strength.
• I found that I wanted to produce this in my magazine and decided to do a double
page spread of ‘Theo Lexis’ an up and coming indie singer so they could feel a
connection to him. When location scouting for places to take photographs, I felt
Camden would be an attractive place to shoot my photos. I decided to photograph
him here due to the relevance of the location in consideration to my audience, as
Camden is considered an ‘Indie hang-out place’ due to its constant presentation of
live music and a ‘bubbly’ atmosphere. I believed this could also be a way to initiate
a connection between the singer and the audience as many people in my target
group may go there or have been there at least once.
4. • When researching codes and conventions of music magazines I found a number of them used a
large title, I felt this was effective in attracting a specific fan base and enticing new audiences,
which ultimately I wanted for my magazine and decided to replicate this in my media product by
making my ND logo big and bold on my front page. I also chose to have it in a burgundy colour,
which was a running theme throughout my contents page and double page spread, I did this as I
believed this would attract my target audience because it’s easily recognisable if it was to be seen
advertised, but also the colour can be seen through the use of presenting the colour on Sophie’s
lips and in presenting certain commentary.
• Another technique I used to attract my audience and create an instant connection was the use of
presenting another singer on the front cover of my magazine. I noticed a generic convention of
music magazines was to use a direct mode of address in order to initiate a preferred reading. In the
case of my magazine ND, I presented Sophie, in a black and white composition with the exception
of her lips. I found this would be enticing as it could be seen as an attractive concept to a male
audience, as it could present sexual connotations but also highlight the sexual liberation of the
youth audience. Other possible connotations of the girl being presented in a black and white plain
fashion, with her lips dressed in a burgundy colour, could underline the desire to deviate from
social norms and stand out in a crowd which I felt would be appealing to an ‘indie’ audience.
