Evalutation 2.2
1. How does your media product represent particular
social groups?
2. Language
During the creation of my product I have had to consider the language I use throughout,
particularly in my contents page and two page spread. I have tried to use words in the
same lexical field as each other such as music, gigs and son on, this helps the reader to
relate to my magazine as these are words they will use often as I’m targeting teenagers to
young adults who all share a particular interest in indie music.
An example of this would be the masthead of my magazine, ‘Indiependant’. I have played
around with the word to make something totally unique that is catchy and will appeal to
my target audience as it features the genre of music in which it contains. The proper
spelling of the word independent would suggest that the magazine is unique and doesn’t
have any competition therefore I think this title works very well.
I have targeted my magazine at a certain category of people by using the LifeMatrix theory,
I would aim to get my magazine out towards the fun/atics category of people, therefore by
using words such as ‘gigs’ I am making it appeal to them as this is language they would
typically be expected to use a lot.
3. Mis-en-scene
• The casual pose in which me and my friend are doing for my main
image suggests that the magazine is laid back. Gig-goers are
stereotypically seen as quite outgoing, relaxed and laid back people
therefore my having this as my main image I feel as if my target
audience will be able to relate to my magazine.
• The outfits also appeal to the target audience, the casual shirts
accompany the casual pose and works very affectively. I decided to
put the picture in black and white as it gives my magazine a retro feel,
suggesting that the two artists on my magazine cover have been in
the music industry for a long time.
4. Colour
• Throughout my magazine I have tried to retain a similar house style
by using the colour scheme of red, white and black. I think these are
all colours in which work well together and are often seen on indie
magazines such as the NME in which I have used as inspiration for my
own magazine. I feel as if the colours I have used are quite light and
simplistic which creates a relaxed vibe towards the chosen target
audience.
