A New Medical Dram Marcus Welby Essay
In 1969 the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) aired a new medical drama called Marcus
Welby, M.D. The title character was a Primary Care Physician (PCP) who made house calls, had
a kind bedside manner, and was on a first name basis with most of his patients. The drama
highlighted the meaning of caring for the whole person, not just a specific part of the body.
Unfortunately those days are gone, just when we need them the most. It is projected that the
demand for PCP s will rapidly increase due to an aging population and health care reform, leaving a
shortage of over 20,000 physicians by the year 2020 ( Projecting the Supply, 2013).
A healthy primary care base is critical to the running of an effective health care system. People
who have access to PCP s are more likely to receive preventive and timely care for medical
conditions. Having a PCP is also associated with fewer emergency department visits and fewer
hospital admissions (Abrams, Nuzum, Mika, Lawlor, 2011). Developed countries have made
primary care the foundation of their healthcare system. The U.S. followed this model until 1949,
and since that time PCP s have been steadily declining (Shi Singh, 2015). A study by West and
Dupras in 2012 showed that only 21.5 percent of third year internal medicine residents intended to
continue on and make general internal medicine their career (Shi Singh, 2015). Today, most
medical school graduates are entering specialties such as anesthesia, cardiology and

Miami Marlins Case Study
Miami Marlins

Although the Marlins finished in third place in the NL East last year,
Miami still finished a full 19 games out of first place. In the race for the Wild Card, the deficit was
even higher. By the end of the season, the Marlins were 26 games back.

The offseason was
a rather quiet one for the Marlins. Miami seems content moving forward with its young cast of
players. The Marlins only moves were a few free agency additions to the pitching staff. Their
biggest haul was the signing of Wei Yin Chen to a five year, $80 million contract, while the
Marlins also signed pitcher Edwin Jackson, who could bounce back from bullpen duties in 2015
to earn a rotation spot. Jackson s ERA as a starting pitcher increased each year from 2011
2014.

Unfortunately for the Phillies, they finished below the Braves last year in the NL East.
Philadelphia wasn t only last in the division, the Phillies also had the worst record in MLB at 63
99. However, the dreadful season earned Philadelphia the first pick in this year s MLB Draft in
June.

The Phillies rebuild began when they finally decided to dismantle the old core that
won the World Series in 2008. From that title team, the Phillies traded the middle infielders who
began their careers with the organization. Philadelphia traded shortstop Jimmy Rollins after the
2014 season and second baseman Chase Utley in August of last season. Both players were traded
to the Los Angeles Dodgers and brought back a few pitching prospects. The Phillies biggest
return came from trading pitcher Cole Hamels to the Texas Rangers in an eight player deal at the
deadline last year. Philadelphia sent Hamels and reliever Jake Diekman to the Rangers for
pitchers Matt Harrison and Jake Thompson, minor league pitching prospects Jared Eickhoff and
Alec Asher, catcher Jorge Alfaro and outfielder Nick Williams. However, Harrison has battled
back issues, so his castoff was merely a way for the Rangers to get the contract off their
books.

As this offseason began, it was new Phillies general manager Matt Klentak s job
to continue the rebuild. Klentak s first move was trading closer Ken Giles and shortstop Jonathan
Arauz to the Houston Astros for former No. 1 overall pick Mark Appel and pitchers Thomas
Eshelman, Brett Oberholtzer, Vincent Velasquez and Harold Arauz. The Phillies deals have
replenished their farm system after years of being trade deadline buyers depleted it. While most of
their prospects continue to develop in the minor leagues, a few could contribute to the Phillies this
year.

The outfield will feature two Rule 5 draft picks, Odubel Herrera and Tyler Goeddel.

Claudette Colvin Unknown Heroes Analysis
Unknown Heroes Claudette Colvin was an influential person durring the civil rights movement
in society by standing up for her rights, and fighting for what she believed in. Claudette was 15
when she first stood up for her rights on the city bus. Claudette knew what her rights were and
she did not want anyone to take them away from her. When blacks continued to get arrested for
standing up for their rights on the buses, the whole town of Montgomery came together to try and
make a change. This was all because of Claudette s bravery on the bus. The most important theme
addressed in Claudette Colvin is that ordinary people can change society because Claudette was

The whole town came together and tried to make a change in society and fight for their rights.
The people of Montgomerytook part in a bus boycott, they borrowed peoples cars who were
willing to give them up for free transportation during the boycott. If there was no transportation
for the blacks, they would not be able to get to their jobs which were necessary for them to make
money. Car owners were asked to lend their vehicles to the MIA carpool so that other people
could drive them around town. For most people especially if they had little money, having a car
was a proud symbol of status. Letting total strangers drive one s car around all day was a hard
thing to ask, but nearly two hundred people turned over their keys to the boycott (Hoose 75).
Many people took part in the boycott and did everything they could to receive equal rights on the
buses. Some people were willing to fight even harder than just borrowing cars, they began to walk
everywhere they went. Family members made enormous sacrifices and sometimes even hobbled
home with barely enough energy to eat supper. And family chores like shopping had to continue.
That meant more steps. The foot weary warriors told their stories at meetings, inspiring and
encouraging one another to keep walking (Hoose 76). The community would not give up and the
people contributing to this movement would not give up on what the people of Montgomery
Everyone knew that the more people taking part in the boycott, the more of an effect it would have.

The Influence Of The Nuremberg Trial On International...
For the victorious parties of war to determine the process of justice makes a significant assumption
that those parties will attempt to apply an extension of the just war theory to include jus post
bellum in that they will endeavor for a just and lasting peace. This assumption is problematic for
three reasons. First, nothing guarantees that as a belligerent concludes acts of war that it has any
intention whatsoever of establishing peace. Second, the victor enjoys the privilege of deciding
what constitutes genocide or mass violence. Finally, the possibility always exists of atrocities
committed by the victor. Ultimately, in the Nuremberg Trial, the victor retained the prerogative to
determine that the wrongs performed by the Nazis were so calculated, so malignant and so
devastating, that civilization cannot tolerate their being ignored because it cannot survive their
being repeated. (Jackson, Opening Address for the United States) In this example, four victorious
nations controlled the responsibility to determine the requirement for a trial, negotiate the
employment of the appropriate system of law, determining the definition of criminal entities, and
defining international law and that of a sovereign nation (Rosen, ed., The Influence of the
Nuremberg Trial on International Criminal Law ).

Ehrlichiosis Research Papers
Ehrlichiosis and Anaplasmosis
Ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis are diseases caused by bacteria and carried by ticks. Other names
for these infections are:
Human monocytic ehrlichiosis (HME).
Human granulocytotropic anaplasmosis (HGA).
CAUSES
These diseases are caused by a bite from an infected adult tick.
RISK FACTORS
These diseases are more likely to occur between late spring and early fall. This is when ticks are
active.
SYMPTOMS
Many infected people have no symptoms. For those with symptoms, HME and HGA cause similar
illnesses. Symptoms typically begin one week or more after a tick bite and may include:
DIAGNOSIS
Diagnosis is based on a physical exam, medical history, and blood tests. Your health care provider

your body when you make contact with leaves or grass where the tick is waiting. Take these steps
to avoid tick bites when you are outdoors:
Wear protective clothing. Long sleeves and long pants are best.
Wear white clothes so you can see ticks more easily.
Tuck your pant legs into your socks.
Put insect repellent on all exposed skin and on your clothes.
Use tick prevention products on your pets, such as shampoos or tick collars.
If you go walking on a trail, stay in the middle of the trail to avoid brushing against bushes.
Avoid walking through areas that have long grass.
Check clothing, hair, and skin repeatedly and before going inside.
Check family members and pets for ticks.
Brush off any ticks that are not attached.
Take a shower or a bath as soon as possible after you have been outdoors. Check your skin for
ticks. The most common places on the body where ticks attach themselves are the scalp, neck,

Dna And Cloning Research Paper
DNA is 2 strands of coiled molecules called a double helix, it gives us all different characteristics
and qualities, It is also a hereditary material found in humans and almost all other organisms. DNA
bases pair up with each other, Adenine(A) must pair with Thymine(T) and Guanine(G) must pair
with Cytosine(C) to make weak hydrogen bonds. DNAstands for deoxyribonucleic acid made of
subunits called nucleotides. Nucleotides are made of a Phosphate group, 5 carbon sugar, and a
nitrogenous base. 2 hydrogen bonds are required to bond Adenine(A) and Thymine(T), 3 hydrogen
bonds are required to bond Guanine(G) and Cytosine(C). Each base pair is combined by a
hydrogen bond.
Clones are organisms that are genetic copies of one another. DNA is very identical to one another,
cloning will allow scientists to discover what proteins do and what their functions are. With or
using recombination scientists can replicate cells. Cloning can happen naturally to plants and
animals (single celled). Cloning has some effect, eliminating genes, ... Show more content on

As the 2 DNA strands open at the origin, replication, 2 strands open forming replication forks(Y

Enzymes unwind and separate the 2 DNA strands by breaking the weak hydrogen bonds. Single
strand binding proteins attach and keep the 2 DNA strands separated and untwisted. Enzyme
topoisomerase attaches to the 2 different forks of the bubble to relieve stress on the DNA
molecule as it separates. Before new DNA strands can form, they must be RNA primers present to
start the addition of new nucleotides. Primase is the enzyme that synthesizes the RNA primer,
DNA polymerase can then add the new nucleotides. Cloning is a good

Chromatography Essay
Chromatography is a separation technique in which the mixture to be separated is dissolved in a
solvent and the resulting solution, often called the mobile phase, is then passed through or over
another material, the stationary phase. The separation of the original mixture depends on how
strongly each component is attracted to the stationary phase. Substances that are attracted strongly
to the stationary phase will be retarded and not move alone with the mobile phase. Weakly attracted
substances will move more rapidly with the mobile phase.
Liquid chromatography is an analytical technique that is useful for separating ions or molecules
that are dissolved in a liquid phase. If the sample solution is in contact ... Show more content on

The compounds are separated by collecting aliquots of the column effluent as a function of time.
Conventional Liquid Chromatography is most commonly used in preparative scale work to purify
and isolate some components of a mixture. It s also used in ultra trace separations where small
disposable columns are used once and then discarded. Analytical separations of solutions for
detection or quantification typically use more sophisticated high pressure liquid chromatography
instruments.
In liquid chromatography, the separator is called the column and consists in most cases of a tube
filled with porous material called the stationary phase. A liquid, called the mobile phase, flows
through the tube between the particles of stationary phase material. A liquid sample is taken from
a mixture to be analyzed and introduced to a part of the system that is at elevated pressure. The
sample is then transported to a separator by the flow in the system.
After the column the separated compounds enter the detector, which measures a physical or
chemical property of each, now relatively pure, compound and creates a proportional electronic
signal. By calibrating with a standard mixture of known compounds, the nature of the compound in

A Comparison Of The Yellow Wallpaper And The Yellow Wallpaper
One similarity between the two works is the that we are limited on where we get our
information. Gilman s short story The Yellow Wallpaper, we see everything through the eyes of
the narrator. The entire story is told from her secret diary when she has the time to write as
shown in the line, I did write for a while in spite of them; but it does exhaust me a good deal
having to be so sly about it (Gilman 527). Due to this, we can only make assumptions based on
the information we get from her. She tells us she is in A colonial mansion, a hereditary estate
(Gilman 526) and that she stays in a big, airy room...It was a nursery first and then a playroom and
gymnasium (Gilman 527). However, once we reach the end of the story, with the... Show more

However there appears to be an element of truth to her fantasies. In the end the narration returns
to an outside perspective where Dr. Gorski reveals In just one week here, she stabbed an orderly,
started a fire and helped another patient to escape (Snyder). These coincide with actions taken
while within her fantasies which leads us to ask what was really going on. In both Gilman s
story and Snyder s film we are forced to reevaluate what we have been told and lead to believe and
discern for ourselves what was truly fact and what may have only been delusions of someone s
mind.
The vivid descriptions in The Yellow Wallpaperhelp to bring the reader along in the narrators
decent into a kind of psychosis. It starts mildly, with her describing the color of wallpaper as
repellant, almost revolting; a smoldering unclean yellow (Gilman 528). As more time passes she
begins to see more things in the paper such as a recurrent spot where the pattern lolls like a
broken neck and two bulbous eyes start at you, and for it have so much expression in an inanimate
thing (Gilman 592). As the pattern and descriptions get more twisted, we get visual clues of the
madness that is slowly consuming the narrator. The color of the paper even begins to become a
physical thing she can smell descried as, creep[ing] all over the house...sulking...hiding...lying in
wait for me...It gets into my hair (Gilman 534). In the end we get a graphic visual representation of

Price discrimination occurs when people of different races or genders are forced to pay different
prices for the same good or service, provided the differences are not due to differences in cost of

It may seem that racism and discrimination doesn t exist anymore in the US, with the election of an
African American as president, but discrimination still harbors here. To see discrimination first
hand, just travel south a few hundred miles where pickup trucks still have the Confederate flag
painted on their cabs and many houses have a Confederate flag flying, which a minority in the area
views as racist. Discrimination has played a huge role in shaping economies and creating poverty;
women, for instance, still reflect a small portion of engineering and higher income job percentages.
A report from http://www.yemenpost.net/23/Reports/20081.htm says that women have a 600
percent higher unemployment rate and receive, at average, 13 percent less money than men do
while having the same occupations and getting the same work done. Discrimination still affects the
poverty rate and unemployment.
Design a proposed economic policy solution to the problem.
According to text, there are two approaches and only the government can really solve this problem
to easing poverty. First,

book then shows us Toni panel in his Superhero costume with a T across the chest and telling us
that Toni is terrific. This is a really cute storybook; my favorite thing about it is that Toni, a
young African American child is portrayed as a superhero. Already the book earns props for
diversity of its characters. It also shows Toni rescuing a stranded cat and helping out, generally
being friendly and playing well with others. It sends a very positive message that terrific kids do

What Role Does Christianity Play In The Chronicles Of Narnia
Many would say that the chronicles of Narnia series, the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in
particular were perhaps one of the best childhood books to be around, but not many know that the
religious symbolism of Christianity plays a key role in the Chronicles of Narnia.

as it provides the bases upon which dental prosthesis are fabricated and must be maximally

In addition, although it is unmovable unlike the mandible, the maxilla is in a fixed position relative
to the temporomandibular joint or the reference positions when the mandible has to function
against the maxillary teeth. This anatomical relationship, know as orientation relation, mandates its
recording when dealing with prosthesis or else it would lead to disharmony of occlusion and
eventually harming supporting and associated tissues.
In addition to the normal maxilla and mandibular positions discussed individually, the
maxillomandibular relationship must also be taken into consideration in the field of prosthodontics
and restorative dentistry. The maxillomandibular relationship accounts for the registration of any
positional relationship of the mandible with respect to the maxilla. The maxillomandibular relation

The Cost Of College Is Too High For Every Student

College level has become too tough and beyond student s reach and abilities, not anyone who

your skills neither your efforts. For the most important, jobs in our market have been evaluating

Today, many computer programmers without collegedegrees get jobs by presenting examples of
their work. With a little imagination, almost any corporation can come up with analogous work

that doesn t make them not have the skills for a job. Twisting percentages in education would be
a good idea for students who are not up to college level. In generally, many of college students
drop out and clearly many of them get on campus without gaining the skills and knowledge in
their freshman and sophomore years to succeed. Jobs and education aren t always related.
Education shouldn t always be the reason for getting a well payed job but rather your skills, not
everything you study in college is remembered and a research by Murray supports his point which
states that, About 10 percent to 20 percent of all 18 year olds can absorb the material in your old
liberal arts textbooks. For engineering and the hard sciences, the percentage is probably not as high
as 10. (Murray 1). In my community, most of the Americans say that the higher educationsystem in

Informative Speech On Carbon-14
I will be telling you about Carbon 14. I will be also talking about Carbon 14 Dating (Radiocarbon
Dating), Isotopes/Atomic Mass Atomic Number. Carbon 14 is an isotope of the element carbon.
All carbon atoms have 6 protons in their nucleus. Most carbon atoms also have 6 neutrons, giving
them an atomic mass of 12 (= 6 protons + 6 neutrons). Carbon14 atoms have two extra neutrons,
giving them a total of 8 neutrons. Carbon 14 has an atomic mass of 14 (= 6 protons + 8 neutrons).
The extra neutrons make the nucleus of carbon 14 unstable.
Carbon 14 is radioactive! Radioactive carbon 14 (also written as 14C) has a half life of 5,730
years. 14C is used to determine the ages of artifacts that were once living (such as pieces of
wood, teeth or bones, coral skeletons, etc.) via a technique called carbon 14 dating or radiocarbon
dating . Some of the carbon dioxide gas in Earth s atmosphere contains 14C atoms. The supply of
CO2 molecules which contain carbon 14 is continuously replenished in our atmosphere. Cosmic
rays from space sporadically strike nitrogen atoms, converting some common nitrogen 14 atoms into
radioactive carbon 14 atoms.
Carbon 14 dating (also called radiocarbon dating ) is used to determine the age of materials that
contain carbon that was originally in living things. It is often used in ... Show more content on

Essay about Analysis of Gotta Love
Analysis of Gotta Love Those Bread Butter Unions Originally Written by P. Nelson The ethics
triangle is a model to follow to help militate against unethical decision making. If Mayor Burns
used this model it might have helped him make better decisions. When there is no moral
discernment of what is right or wrong, a public official or administrator needs to analyze the
situation carefully. However, in the following case study this does not appear to be something
Mayor Burns practiced. For the purposes of this paper the case study Gotta Love Those Bread
Butter Unions will be analyzed. The source for all subsequent quotes is from this case study. The
first unethical issue is that the newly elected Mayor Burns... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This covers consequence, duty, principle and virtue concepts of the ethics triangle. In spite of
Burns belief, it was not only his two police friends and the Association that were responsible for
his election. It took votes from ALL of the citizens. Unfortunately, many of his decisions and
actions were consistently based on this unspoken loyalty he felt towards his two friends and the
Association. Instead of Mayor Burns being concerned with his overall duty, role and
responsibility as mayor to all Sealy citizens, who were responsible for his election, his loyalty
was misdirected. This obligation could be viewed as a conflict of interest, because his
commitment to the officers overshadowed his commitment to the public. It also affected his
decisions and how he carried out some of his duties in his official capacity as mayor. It appears
he made some of these choices in order to encourage his friends and Association members to
support him in attempts to secure his re election. In an effort, to bring all these issues in view,
each area of concern will be further elaborated in this analysis. As mayor, Burns favors resolving
issues that involve the police. The public interest for the greater good and the greatest number was
not initially a priority. However, it appears before Professor Burns was elected he was aware of the

Analysis Of The Movie Ironweed By William Kennedy
As a former newspaperman turned American Writer, William Kennedy is known for writing
novels in which incidents and historic movements of his birthplace Albany, New York, are
featured. One of Kennedy s most well known pieces of literature, Ironweed (1983), is the third
book in Kennedy s Albany cycle. Taking place during the Great Depression, the story of Ironweed
s protagonist Francis Phelan, a once major league third baseman, murderer of three, and a drunk, is
depicted. Residing in Albany with his family, a freak accident tore Francis 13 day old son, Gerald,
away from him. Tormented by that horrific event, Francis fled from his family and the ties to the
event, being forced to wander the streets, seeking both nourishment and appeasement from the
overbearing guilt plaguing his soul. After twenty two years of perpetually chasing away his
damaged soul, with outbursts of lethal violence, ignoring all responsibilities and opportunity for
honest work; after surviving malnourishment, frigid temperatures, and alcoholism, Francis finally
found rock bottom. At this realization, Francis decides to return to Albany with hopes of
reconciling his actions of the past, and to rekindle the relationship he once held with his family. His
inner thoughts of himself are of disgust, calling himself a sinner, and one undeserving of happiness.
It is for that reason and the years of running away from himself that Francis finds difficulty in

The Grapes Of Wrath By Ma Joad
Ma Joad: Keeping her family in line since 1939
In a time where women were considered inferior, The Grapes of Wrath uses secondary characters,
specifically Ma Joad, to demonstrate a woman taking charge in a family setting, and the
relationships of such a woman with others. Ma helps amplify the theme of feminism and women s
rights in different scenarios. Her relationships with Pa, her daughter Rose of Sharon, and even
herself all convey different elements of an extraordinary leader and an amazing mother.
Ma and Pa s relationship throughout The Grapes of Wrath defies the idea of a normal couple in the
era of the Dust Bowl. They are represented very much as equals through the conflicts their family
has to face, contrary to other couples, where the husband is in charge. Ma takes the lead in
many situations and Pa respects, and maybe even fears her opinions. Ma commandeers decision
making and often causes conflicts with her strong beliefs. This passage conveys the dynamic of
their relationship very early on in the book: Pa broke in, But s pose there just ain t room? He
had twisted his neck to look up at her, and he was ashamed. Her tone had made him ashamed.
[...] She stopped, and Pa turned back, and his spirit was raw from the whipping. (Steinbeck 132)
Not only does Pa look to Ma for advice, but he also notices that she has a higher authority over the
family than he does. It becomes obvious as the book goes on that he is not well equipped to deal
with the situations that

Budget Cuts And Intermediate Units
Budget cuts and Intermediate Units
As the nation falls on hard economic times, all aspects of society are affected, including
education. School districts are faced with decreased funding from federal and state resources and
an increase in the cost of salaries and benefits. This is causing deficits that, if left unchecked can
adversely affect the educational process and ultimately have a negative impact on students and
society. School Districts have increased expectations toward accountability and performance with
diminishing resources. They are expected to do more with less. The Maintenance of Effort
requirement in IDEA 34 CFR В§300.203 puts limits on how a LEA determines ways to address
their budget deficits. Funding formulas ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If a student is in need, this need does not change just because funding has decreased. The decline in
federal monies supporting IDEA regulations, 40% federal funding when the law was crafted to the
current contribution of 16.5%, (Shah, 2014) leave the state and local governments picking up the
deficits to maintain effort. This law can create barriers if the effort being maintained is fruitless.
Districts are continually looking for ways to overcome these barriers. These alternative approaches
seek to turn the budgetary challenge into an education improvement opportunity by unlocking
resources so they can be used differently and by re orienting the system around effectiveness and
efficiency (Petrilli Roza, 2011) One such alternative approach is the belief that intervening with a
student before identification of being in need of services can decrease expenditures for special
education services. IDEA 2004 part B regulations permit an LEA to use not more than 15% of
these funds on Early Intervening Services. This allocation comes with strict guidelines on how and
for whom the funds can be spent and these expenditures must be accurately reported. (Munson,
2014) Districts have begun to implement ways to decrease referrals through early identification of
those students who may have challenges, addressing the challenges early on and avoiding the
costly path of special

extensive. For this assignment I did not learn anything new or discover any new theories over

Sellar s Myth of the Given
Many empiricists claim that there is a sort of knowledge that is directed towards our
consciousness and this knowledge is assumed to be the given. The given which is held in all of
us has access that is highly privileged and presupposes no learning and no prior form of
associations. It provides the foundation and first layer for empirical knowledge. The knowledge
that is gained through experience and pure reason. Empirical knowledge comes from observation. I
will argue in favor of Sellars rejection of the Given; that the Myth of the Given is truly untenable.
Wilfrid Sellars labeled the existence of such knowledge as the Myth of the Given. When calling
something a myth then that would mean that it does not exist at all. Sellars rejected all the
arguments that were in favor that were put forward in supporting the existence of the given and
claims that empirical knowledge, which has been dictated as rational and has no need for the
given. His position in disregarding the given has been constituted as the main focus of the
philosopher s career. Let s delve straight into why Sellars decided to dismiss the given.
Sellars rejected the idea that knowledge is given. The Myth of the Given plays on the notion that
knowledge is either basic or given . Here is an example: If you do not possess the concept of
something being blue then you cannot speak of. The true judgement that contains the term blue has
the ability to recognize something that looks blue, presupposes the

Have you ever remembered the time people against the consumption of alcoholic beverages? It was
the temperance movement which began in the early 19th century in order to reduce drunkenness.
Nevertheless, the temperance movement promoted government to make the prohibition in the

maintain their social harmony. Moreover, citizens especially the drinkers children developed more

Social Policies In The Poor Law ( 1834.
Social policies the fundamental principles in which a society is based. Created to tackle poverty,
protect society addressing issues such as social welfare, justice and individual wellbeing. By 1834
the government were under fierce criticism due to rising and mounting costs of looking after the
poor, it became clear a change was needed to fix problems in society. The government brought in an
amendment act titled the Poor Law(1834) which was designed to reduce the cost of looking after
the poor, passed by parliament this new law meant anyone seeking relief from povertyhad to now
enter a workhouse(BBC Bitesize, 2017). In the early 1800 s the population was rapidly rising, an
industrial revolution, the development of towns and the first experience of modern unemployment
caused problems within British society (Spicker, 2017). There was suspicion from middle and
upper class taxpayers that their money encouraged the poor to be lazy and avoid work,
Squandering money on alcohol and tobacco. In addition, this encouraged the poor to have more
children in which they could not afford to support causing resentment and dividing society (Murray,
2013).
Prior to the Poor Law Amendment Act there was the Elizabethan Poor Law 1601 which was more
generous towards the poor. It was becoming impossible for the government to sustain this law due
to the growing costs. Statistics show that in 1802 the expenditure on poor relief was costing the

Raskolikov s Theory In Crime And Punishment
Dostoevsky s novel Crime and Punishment analyzes a provocative theory constructed by the
main character, Raskolnikov. His theory divides ordinary and extraordinary people. According to
Raskolnikov, ordinary people have no opinion of their own, being just mere followers, while
extraordinary people craft new opinions for the society. Extraordinary people are prone to
greatness, being therefore justified to act in any way in order to achieve it, even if it means to kill
or steal. An interesting example Raskolnikov makes is:
the lawgivers and founders of mankind, starting from the most ancient and going on to the
Lycurguses, the Solons, the Muhammads, the Napoleons, and so forth, all of them to a man were
criminals, from the fact alone that in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This theory can also be applied to Patrick SUskind s novel Perfume, more precisely to the main
character, Grenouille. Ironically, if Raskolnikov was not able to live up to his own theory and prove
to be an extraordinary individual, Grenouille becomes one without realizing it. I will further on
expand my argument by investigating Grenouille s motive, technique of conducting the killings and
his relation to guilt.
Grenouille s unique gift allows him to understand the world in a way that no one else can. He
never forgets a scent by labeling them in his palace of odor and by constantly combining them in
the most beautiful ways. Moreover, he knows that attraction is based on scent ... this scent will
be ripened and take on a gravity that no one, man or woman, will be able to escape. People will be
overwhelmed, disarmed, helpless before the magic of this girl, and they will not know why
(Suskind 171).
Grenouille s motive of committing all those crimes is concentrated around a superior idea, a great
one: creating the most extraordinary perfume in the world, a perfume that will allow him to rule
mankind by combining the scents of the most exquisite

The Fathers Of The Family
The fathers of the family were constantly out working in the fields, and the mother of the family
would either be cleaning, taking care of infants, or cooking for her family. So, from the time
children are able to walk, they have to discover ways to pass the time. Just like today, some
activities were restricted due to the weather outside. For example, during the winter season pigs
were being slaughtered. Children would go to the slaughterhouse and pick up the pigs bladders
and blow them up like balloons. Also during the wintertime, it would snow. Just like children
today, kids would go out in the streets and participate in snowball fights. When it was summery
outside children would go to ponds or streams and have water fights with their friends or siblings,
because during this time water fights were a popular form of recreation. Other forms of recreation
were: fighting battles with wooden swords, competing in little play tournaments, and playing hide
and seek. Chiara Frugoni noted in her book: We known more about medieval children s games ever
since a whole collection of toys made of clay was discovered during the nineteenth century in
Strasbourg, in the workshop of a thirteenth century potter: bird shaped whistles, miniature tiles and
pitchers, tiny moneyboxes, little dolls, and diminutive horses with riders on their backs. (Frugoni,

The Pros And Cons Of Freedom In America
America has been shaped in many different ways and continues be shaped daily. America is
constantly changing and facing new challenges. However, authors of By the People have four
ideas liberty, self rule, limited government, and equality that they believe are the leading factors
in how America is shaped. These ideas help elaborate on what makes America a strong and
withstanding country. These ideas are the base of America s politics and what makes us a unique
country. These four ideas are constantly being debated between politicians on what the different
meanings are. Firstly, liberty can be defined as the equal freedom from oppression and restriction
in a society. Freedom is what the United States was designed to give most people however it is
still being worked on in present day. Freedom is wanted for all American and is the essential focus
in this country. There are two different types of liberty negative and positive liberty. Both negative
and positive liberties can be debated on what is best for American society. According to Morone
and Kersh, negative liberty can be defined as the freedom from the absence of restraint, (12).
Negative liberty position is for the freedom from restriction of government on what the individual
can or should do in society. The only restriction to a person should be if a person wants to harm
another individual. Conservatives and libertarians are usually in favor of negative liberty. Positive
liberty belief is that there should be freedom

The Beatles And Their Music
An entire generation in Cold War Soviet Russia was born to a nuclear bomb, raised under the
constant threat of war, and seemed doomed to suffocate by their own government, until they were
emancipated by a life force that was as formidable as unlikely a savior. This paper discusses the
role of the Beatles and their music in the cultural, political and social revolutions that took place
Cold WarRussia. Drawing upon various conversations and anecdotes that Leslie Woodhead
discusses in his 2013 book How The Beatles Rocked the Kremlin , this paper attempts to also
understand how contemporary Russia has evolved to carry with herself the revolutionary spirit of
the Beatles.
As reiterated upon by various interviewees in different capacities, it is important that one must
preface any discussion of the Beatles in the Soviet Union with a historical context of the country in
the 1960s. It is indeed impossible to guess whether the Beatles would have had the impact they
made on another historical generation, but the Soviet population in the mid sixties certainly lived
in a time that was fertile ground for the arrival of the Beatles (Woodhead, 23). In those early years
of the Cold War, Nikita Khrushchev and his efforts in spearheading Russia in the international
space race, along with his thawing of political, economic and cultural restrictions were a source of a
nationwide zeal and pride. Nevertheless, the rapid events leading to his ousting in 1965, and the

Description Of A Person s Personality

ESTJ vs. INFJ What is the Difference? A person s personality is his or her essence. It is what
guides decisions, emotions, and even thoughts. Some may wonder if it is possible to explore
every nuance of such a complex part of a being, but there are ways to determine what type of
personality a person has, and then branch off into a more detailed examination of that person
specifically. Combined with other factors, such as personality disorders and the environment that
someone has grown up in, the Myers Briggs Type Indicator, or MBTI, test and analysis can
determine an accurate portrayal of a personality. Created in 1943 by Katherine Briggs and Isabel
Briggs Myers, it is a system made up of four basic functions and sub functions that combine to
make a personality type. The mother and daughter team constructed it off of Jung s theories
(History 2). Based on this system, one of the most common personality types in the US
population is called an ESTJ, and one of the least common personality types is called an INFJ.
There are many differences and similarities between these two types. An ESTJ personality,
overall, is practical, fact based, and outgoing, whereas an INFJ personality is more private and
makes decisions based on feelings; however, both are organized people who make good leaders and
are capable of great success in roles that involve helping others.

being alone affects him, Loneliness has followed me my whole life, everywhere. In bars, in

Scorsese,).Travis would not necessarily be considered the most agreeable person since he does
struggle with fitting into society. It might seem that he does not agree with the views of others,

Positive Impact Of Reconstruction
During the reconstruction there were various impacts but were they really a success or failures?
In the 1860 s through out the 1870 s the civil war settled some significant national problems, but
also created many more. Slavery was put to an end and the country was reunited however the
Union s victory cost people to lose their lives and lose their property. It was said that the most
challenging task was the future of the four million freed slaves. By 1877 the reconstruction ended
due to the pressure by Southern whites then the former slaves were put into the second class a
system of state enforced segregation and discrimination. The reconstruction was a period following
the civil war of rebuilding the United states. President Lincoln s goal in the Civil War was to hold
the nation together. The Confederacy was destroyed for good. Due to the success and failures of
Reconstruction, although the impact was economically positive for newly freed African Americans
because they were able to gain more opportunities like in the south there were resources, businesses
and education , the impacts were mostly negative politically and socially because they were forced

The Importance Of Chromosomes
nuclear transfer. But, even after days, the follicles didn t develop. The exact reason is unknown but
they assumed it to be either because of the DNA or nucleus condition or incompatibility between
mouse oocyte and mammoth nucleus.
Then again let us assume that we find an intact nucleus having a proper DNA inside it, there are still
many obstacles to overcome. One being lack of enough knowledge and information about the
number of chromosomes that mammoths possessed. Moreover, Y chromosome in a mammal is
typically very small and repetitive, therefore, making it hard to sort it out. But, the solution can be
sequencing only the female species. Also, determining the exact sequence of other regions
including centromere is almost impossible. So, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the experiment, they took frozen samples of ovarian tissue from African elephants and
transplanted it into mice. After several days they observed mature follicles develop inside the
ovary of the mice. This showed that it was indeed possible to transplant tissues from ovaries of one
animal to another (Henry, 2008).
Another is to transfer the mammoth nucleus, for this, it is first necessary to remove the elephant s
nucleus. Another important component beside nucleus is the mitochondria and it has to be
compatible with each other. Even though mammoths and elephants are closely related, there s still
a risk. So, the solution that the researchers proposed was to replace the elephant s mitochondria
with synthetic ones and this is indeed plausible because mammoth s mitochondria have already
been sequenced. While doing this it is also necessary to make sure that there aren t any remains of
elephant s mitochondria left inside the cell which might fuse with the newer one.
Finally, the last step is to transfer the fertilized egg to a suitable surrogate. The main concern here
is whether the surrogate is suitable to harbor the mammoth fetus but evidence gained form
preserved mammoths have found that size is not a problem since they are similar in terms of size
and height (Henry, 2008).
All the steps are just a possibility because when an organism dies, DNA decay starts almost
immediately. So, the samples

Corporate Incentives for Hedging and Hedge Accounting
Abstract
The aim of this term paper is to supply an analysis on the rationales for corporations to apply
hedging and hedge accounting. In order to do so, P. M. DeMarzo and D. Duffie s paper Corporate
Incentives for Hedging and Hedge Accounting published 1995 will be reviewed and analysed.
This term paper will start with a short review of the literature on corporate risk management and
hedging policies and then move on to a description of the model developed by DeMarzo and
Duffie and its rationale. Then, their findings and propositions will be presented followed by the
conclusion.

In 2008, Muller and Verschoor, published a study on 471 non financial European firrms from the
UK, Netherlands, Germany and Belgium. In this study they aim to investigate the informational
effect of disclosing derivative positions. It is an interesting matter since European firms did not
disclose any of this information until 1990. The study focuses on the usage of foreign exchange
derivatives while also investigating the condition in which a firm decides to employ these
instruments and to which extent. Even though they have found evidence of the firms using
derivatives, their study presented weak results in terms of informative effect of derivative position
disclosure.
Model
DeMarzo and Duffie build a model in their paper in order to illustrate the relationship between
investors, accounting information and managers incentive. It involves other factors such as the
choice between accounting and economic risk hedging, derivative position disclosure, firm
reputation and volatility of managers future wages. To illustrate their interaction consider the
following graph:
Description of the Model
DeMarzo and Duffie s model builds upon the one from Holmstrom and Ricart i Costa (1986).
The time frame is two periods. Total profits without hedging after period 1 is denoted as X+ ОёЙ›,

Analysis Of On Going Home In Joan Didion s The Norton...
In response to question three in The Norton Reader , I believe that parents today can give their
children home. The author of On Going Home , Joan Didion finds herself caught between the
sentiments of her life growing up and the realities of her life today. She is wondering if she can
give her daughter home like she had.
My family consists of my mom, dad, two sisters, and one brother. I am the youngest child of the
family. With my siblings being a good deal older than me, I tended to feel left out when they got
to do things that I didn t. The age gap left me feeling like an outsider sometimes. As we grew
older, the bond between us grew much, much stronger. I think of my siblings more like friends
now. They are people that I can tell

Required Music Education
The Need for Required Music Education
Over 2.1 million children around the country do not have access to a music education program
(Pellegrinelli 2). These students that are not introduced to music education could be able to learn
and understand mathematics and reading skills much more efficiently by simply introducing music
into their lives (Taylor 2). When involved in music, anxiety and depression levels could decrease
as well ( Landmark 1). Music is not required in all schools, and students could benefit from more
music education (Braun 1). Even though many students dislike music and think it is too hard,
schools should be obliged to require music classes through grade school because students that are
actively involved in music gain many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, there is ample evidence showing that there are other benefits of music outside of
academics that these students could benefit from. Music educator Anne Edmunds said, [Music]
Exposure also helps with cognitive, social and emotional development ( Mind 1). Though
academics are not the only benefit of music, at most times, music will benefit everyone in some
sort of academic way. Out of 61 seniors taking piano lessons, all of them showed positive
differences in mental and physical areas. This would benefit young people as well ( Landmark 1).
Not only does Music for the Mind and Bruhn and Tims show that there are other benefits of music
education for students, The Landmark Fletcher Music Study proves that music does help most
people. While many may believe that some people s academics may not improve when music
education is involved, most people are benefited academically by music education, and there are
many benefits outside of academics. While it is true that some adults and students do not take
music lessons or classes because they think it is too hard, or not fun, music education is just like
many other things. It takes practice and dedication to become better. Many adults take up golf,
painting, dance, or other group activities instead. However, with these activities, for them to

Frost, By Robert Frost
Robert Frost, an indigenous New England poet, is deserving of an ovation for his contributions
and magnitude in American Literature. Frost advises his readers to be actively engaged in
questioning the world we inhabit (49, Dickstein). In most of Frost s work, readers and critics enjoy
his choices of theme, likely being the outdoors and his surroundings. By using emotions recollected
in tranquility and his organic and inviolable relationship with his countryside, he celebrates New
Englands natural beauty throughout his literature using simple and accessible idioms. Edward
Garnett once predicted that Frost was destined to take a permanent place in American Literature
which he unquestionably has (40 49).
James S. Wilson praised Frost for his abiding humanity and the honesty of his portrayals of people
and situations, an honesty that disguises the inherent passion of his work. Like previously
mentioned, Frost s themes were often what caught the attention of many. As Morris Dickstein
explained in Critical Insights Robert Frost, the core themes were established early on and have
remained constant focal points up to the present, though revised and elaborated upon over time (40).
Prior to Frost s pursuit of poetry, he had worked on a farm. Having done that, he had many hours on
the land, with time to appreciate the green colors and natural sounds and beauty. Robert Frost had
educational background, including the renowned Dartmouth College and Harvard University, left his

Brief History Of Time By Stephen Hawking
For the second semester book report I chose to read A Brief History of Time by Stephen
Hawking. Before I started reading I knew what I signed up for. A lot of math, science and
complicated stuff that sometimes makes my head hurt. Nonetheless A Brief History of Time is
about the history of science, history of how the universe began and how the journey of finding the
theory for everything has been going. He talks about some of the theories that may help with
finding the theory like the black hole theory, general relativity, quantum mechanics, imaginary time,
string theory and many more. He also mentions the belief that people have that god created the
universe, that God created everything.
The book starts with Stephen Hawking talking about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A Greek astronomer named Ptolemy agreed with Aristotle theory and made a model that
provided a decent accurate system for predicting the places where heavenly bodies in the sky
were located. His model was accepted and adopted generally. But then a simpler model made by
a Polish priest, Nicholas Copernicus was suggested. His idea was that the sun was still at the
center and that the earth and the planets moved in circular orbits around the sun. Two
astronomers took this idea seriously Johannes Kepler and Galileo Galilei and they started publicly
supporting the Copernican theory. The death of the Aristotelian/Ptolemaic theory came in 1609
when Galileo started to look at the sky with a telescope. When he looked at Jupiter he saw that it
was by a lot of small satellites or moon that orbited around it. Johannes then changed Copernicus s
theory a bit by suggesting that the planets move in ellipses instead of circles. An explanation came
when Isaac Newton published his Philosophiae Naturalis Principia mathematica in 1687. In it he
provided a theory of how bodies move in space and time. He also made the complicated
mathematics needed to analyze those motions. Then questions were raised like whether the
universe had a beginning in time and whether it is limited in space.
Edwin Hubble in 1929 made an observation that the galaxies are moving rapidly away from us like
the universe is expanding. Then he thought that the universe was really close

  • 2. A New Medical Dram Marcus Welby Essay In 1969 the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) aired a new medical drama called Marcus Welby, M.D. The title character was a Primary Care Physician (PCP) who made house calls, had a kind bedside manner, and was on a first name basis with most of his patients. The drama highlighted the meaning of caring for the whole person, not just a specific part of the body. Unfortunately those days are gone, just when we need them the most. It is projected that the demand for PCP s will rapidly increase due to an aging population and health care reform, leaving a shortage of over 20,000 physicians by the year 2020 ( Projecting the Supply, 2013). A healthy primary care base is critical to the running of an effective health care system. People who have access to PCP s are more likely to receive preventive and timely care for medical conditions. Having a PCP is also associated with fewer emergency department visits and fewer hospital admissions (Abrams, Nuzum, Mika, Lawlor, 2011). Developed countries have made primary care the foundation of their healthcare system. The U.S. followed this model until 1949, and since that time PCP s have been steadily declining (Shi Singh, 2015). A study by West and Dupras in 2012 showed that only 21.5 percent of third year internal medicine residents intended to continue on and make general internal medicine their career (Shi Singh, 2015). Today, most medical school graduates are entering specialties such as anesthesia, cardiology and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Miami Marlins Case Study Miami Marlins

Although the Marlins finished in third place in the NL East last year, Miami still finished a full 19 games out of first place. In the race for the Wild Card, the deficit was even higher. By the end of the season, the Marlins were 26 games back.

The offseason was a rather quiet one for the Marlins. Miami seems content moving forward with its young cast of players. The Marlins only moves were a few free agency additions to the pitching staff. Their biggest haul was the signing of Wei Yin Chen to a five year, $80 million contract, while the Marlins also signed pitcher Edwin Jackson, who could bounce back from bullpen duties in 2015 to earn a rotation spot. Jackson s ERA as a starting pitcher increased each year from 2011 2014.

Philadelphia wasn t only last in the division, the Phillies also had the worst record in MLB at 63 99. However, the dreadful season earned Philadelphia the first pick in this year s MLB Draft in June.

The Phillies rebuild began when they finally decided to dismantle the old core that won the World Series in 2008. From that title team, the Phillies traded the middle infielders who began their careers with the organization. Philadelphia traded shortstop Jimmy Rollins after the 2014 season and second baseman Chase Utley in August of last season. Both players were traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers and brought back a few pitching prospects. The Phillies biggest return came from trading pitcher Cole Hamels to the Texas Rangers in an eight player deal at the deadline last year. Philadelphia sent Hamels and reliever Jake Diekman to the Rangers for pitchers Matt Harrison and Jake Thompson, minor league pitching prospects Jared Eickhoff and Alec Asher, catcher Jorge Alfaro and outfielder Nick Williams. However, Harrison has battled back issues, so his castoff was merely a way for the Rangers to get the contract off their books.

As this offseason began, it was new Phillies general manager Matt Klentak s job to continue the rebuild. Klentak s first move was trading closer Ken Giles and shortstop Jonathan Arauz to the Houston Astros for former No. 1 overall pick Mark Appel and pitchers Thomas Eshelman, Brett Oberholtzer, Vincent Velasquez and Harold Arauz. The Phillies deals have replenished their farm system after years of being trade deadline buyers depleted it. While most of their prospects continue to develop in the minor leagues, a few could contribute to the Phillies this year.

Claudette Colvin Unknown Heroes Analysis Unknown Heroes Claudette Colvin was an influential person durring the civil rights movement in society by standing up for her rights, and fighting for what she believed in. • 6. The Influence Of The Nuremberg Trial On International... For the victorious parties of war to determine the process of justice makes a significant assumption that those parties will attempt to apply an extension of the just war theory to include jus post bellum in that they will endeavor for a just and lasting peace. This assumption is problematic for three reasons. First, nothing guarantees that as a belligerent concludes acts of war that it has any intention whatsoever of establishing peace. Second, the victor enjoys the privilege of deciding what constitutes genocide or mass violence. Finally, the possibility always exists of atrocities committed by the victor. Ultimately, in the Nuremberg Trial, the victor retained the prerogative to determine that the wrongs performed by the Nazis were so calculated, so malignant and so devastating, that civilization cannot tolerate their being ignored because it cannot survive their being repeated. (Jackson, Opening Address for the United States) In this example, four victorious nations controlled the responsibility to determine the requirement for a trial, negotiate the employment of the appropriate system of law, determining the definition of criminal entities, and defining international law and that of a sovereign nation (Rosen, ed., The Influence of the Nuremberg Trial on International Criminal Law ). ... Dna And Cloning Research Paper DNA is 2 strands of coiled molecules called a double helix, it gives us all different characteristics and qualities, It is also a hereditary material found in humans and almost all other organisms. DNA bases pair up with each other, Adenine(A) must pair with Thymine(T) and Guanine(G) must pair with Cytosine(C) to make weak hydrogen bonds. DNAstands for deoxyribonucleic acid made of subunits called nucleotides. Nucleotides are made of a Phosphate group, 5 carbon sugar, and a nitrogenous base. 2 hydrogen bonds are required to bond Adenine(A) and Thymine(T), 3 hydrogen bonds are required to bond Guanine(G) and Cytosine(C). Each base pair is combined by a hydrogen bond. Clones are organisms that are genetic copies of one another. Chromatography Essay Chromatography is a separation technique in which the mixture to be separated is dissolved in a solvent and the resulting solution, often called the mobile phase, is then passed through or over another material, the stationary phase. The separation of the original mixture depends on how strongly each component is attracted to the stationary phase. Substances that are attracted strongly to the stationary phase will be retarded and not move alone with the mobile phase. Weakly attracted substances will move more rapidly with the mobile phase. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The compounds are separated by collecting aliquots of the column effluent as a function of time. Conventional Liquid Chromatography is most commonly used in preparative scale work to purify and isolate some components of a mixture. It s also used in ultra trace separations where small disposable columns are used once and then discarded. Analytical separations of solutions for detection or quantification typically use more sophisticated high pressure liquid chromatography instruments. In liquid chromatography, the separator is called the column and consists in most cases of a tube filled with porous material called the stationary phase. A liquid, called the mobile phase, flows through the tube between the particles of stationary phase material. A liquid sample is taken from a mixture to be analyzed and introduced to a part of the system that is at elevated pressure. The sample is then transported to a separator by the flow in the system. After the column the separated compounds enter the detector, which measures a physical or chemical property of each, now relatively pure, compound and creates a proportional electronic signal. Radioactive carbon 14 (also written as 14C) has a half life of 5,730 years. 14C is used to determine the ages of artifacts that were once living (such as pieces of wood, teeth or bones, coral skeletons, etc.) via a technique called carbon 14 dating or radiocarbon dating . Some of the carbon dioxide gas in Earth s atmosphere contains 14C atoms. The supply of CO2 molecules which contain carbon 14 is continuously replenished in our atmosphere. Cosmic rays from space sporadically strike nitrogen atoms, converting some common nitrogen 14 atoms into radioactive carbon 14 atoms. Nelson The ethics triangle is a model to follow to help militate against unethical decision making. If Mayor Burns used this model it might have helped him make better decisions. When there is no moral discernment of what is right or wrong, a public official or administrator needs to analyze the situation carefully. However, in the following case study this does not appear to be something Mayor Burns practiced. For the purposes of this paper the case study Gotta Love Those Bread Butter Unions will be analyzed. The source for all subsequent quotes is from this case study. The first unethical issue is that the newly elected Mayor Burns... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This covers consequence, duty, principle and virtue concepts of the ethics triangle. In spite of Burns belief, it was not only his two police friends and the Association that were responsible for his election. It took votes from ALL of the citizens. Unfortunately, many of his decisions and actions were consistently based on this unspoken loyalty he felt towards his two friends and the Association. Instead of Mayor Burns being concerned with his overall duty, role and responsibility as mayor to all Sealy citizens, who were responsible for his election, his loyalty was misdirected. This obligation could be viewed as a conflict of interest, because his commitment to the officers overshadowed his commitment to the public. It also affected his decisions and how he carried out some of his duties in his official capacity as mayor. It appears he made some of these choices in order to encourage his friends and Association members to support him in attempts to secure his re election. In an effort, to bring all these issues in view, each area of concern will be further elaborated in this analysis. As mayor, Burns favors resolving issues that involve the police. The public interest for the greater good and the greatest number was not initially a priority. However, it appears before Professor Burns was elected he was aware of the agenda ... Analysis Of The Movie Ironweed By William Kennedy As a former newspaperman turned American Writer, William Kennedy is known for writing novels in which incidents and historic movements of his birthplace Albany, New York, are featured. One of Kennedy s most well known pieces of literature, Ironweed (1983), is the third book in Kennedy s Albany cycle. Taking place during the Great Depression, the story of Ironweed s protagonist Francis Phelan, a once major league third baseman, murderer of three, and a drunk, is depicted. Residing in Albany with his family, a freak accident tore Francis 13 day old son, Gerald, away from him. Tormented by that horrific event, Francis fled from his family and the ties to the event, being forced to wander the streets, seeking both nourishment and appeasement from the overbearing guilt plaguing his soul. After twenty two years of perpetually chasing away his damaged soul, with outbursts of lethal violence, ignoring all responsibilities and opportunity for honest work; after surviving malnourishment, frigid temperatures, and alcoholism, Francis finally found rock bottom. At this realization, Francis decides to return to Albany with hopes of reconciling his actions of the past, and to rekindle the relationship he once held with his family. His inner thoughts of himself are of disgust, calling himself a sinner, and one undeserving of happiness. It is for that reason and the years of running away from himself that Francis finds difficulty in revealing his vulnerable side, often pushing the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Grapes Of Wrath By Ma Joad Ma Joad: Keeping her family in line since 1939 In a time where women were considered inferior, The Grapes of Wrath uses secondary characters, specifically Ma Joad, to demonstrate a woman taking charge in a family setting, and the relationships of such a woman with others. Ma helps amplify the theme of feminism and women s rights in different scenarios. Her relationships with Pa, her daughter Rose of Sharon, and even herself all convey different elements of an extraordinary leader and an amazing mother. Ma and Pa s relationship throughout The Grapes of Wrath defies the idea of a normal couple in the era of the Dust Bowl. They are represented very much as equals through the conflicts their family has to face, contrary to other couples, where the husband is in charge. Ma takes the lead in many situations and Pa respects, and maybe even fears her opinions. Ma commandeers decision making and often causes conflicts with her strong beliefs. This passage conveys the dynamic of their relationship very early on in the book: Pa broke in, But s pose there just ain t room? He had twisted his neck to look up at her, and he was ashamed. Her tone had made him ashamed. [...] She stopped, and Pa turned back, and his spirit was raw from the whipping. The decline in federal monies supporting IDEA regulations, 40% federal funding when the law was crafted to the current contribution of 16.5%, (Shah, 2014) leave the state and local governments picking up the deficits to maintain effort. This law can create barriers if the effort being maintained is fruitless. Districts are continually looking for ways to overcome these barriers. These alternative approaches seek to turn the budgetary challenge into an education improvement opportunity by unlocking resources so they can be used differently and by re orienting the system around effectiveness and efficiency (Petrilli Roza, 2011) One such alternative approach is the belief that intervening with a student before identification of being in need of services can decrease expenditures for special education services. IDEA 2004 part B regulations permit an LEA to use not more than 15% of these funds on Early Intervening Services. This allocation comes with strict guidelines on how and for whom the funds can be spent and these expenditures must be accurately reported. The given which is held in all of us has access that is highly privileged and presupposes no learning and no prior form of associations. It provides the foundation and first layer for empirical knowledge. The knowledge that is gained through experience and pure reason. Empirical knowledge comes from observation. I will argue in favor of Sellars rejection of the Given; that the Myth of the Given is truly untenable. Wilfrid Sellars labeled the existence of such knowledge as the Myth of the Given. When calling something a myth then that would mean that it does not exist at all. Sellars rejected all the arguments that were in favor that were put forward in supporting the existence of the given and claims that empirical knowledge, which has been dictated as rational and has no need for the given. His position in disregarding the given has been constituted as the main focus of the philosopher s career. Let s delve straight into why Sellars decided to dismiss the given. Sellars rejected the idea that knowledge is given. The Myth of the Given plays on the notion that knowledge is either basic or given . Drawing upon various conversations and anecdotes that Leslie Woodhead discusses in his 2013 book How The Beatles Rocked the Kremlin , this paper attempts to also understand how contemporary Russia has evolved to carry with herself the revolutionary spirit of the Beatles. As reiterated upon by various interviewees in different capacities, it is important that one must preface any discussion of the Beatles in the Soviet Union with a historical context of the country in the 1960s. It is indeed impossible to guess whether the Beatles would have had the impact they made on another historical generation, but the Soviet population in the mid sixties certainly lived in a time that was fertile ground for the arrival of the Beatles (Woodhead, 23). A person s personality is his or her essence. It is what guides decisions, emotions, and even thoughts. Some may wonder if it is possible to explore every nuance of such a complex part of a being, but there are ways to determine what type of personality a person has, and then branch off into a more detailed examination of that person specifically. Combined with other factors, such as personality disorders and the environment that someone has grown up in, the Myers Briggs Type Indicator, or MBTI, test and analysis can determine an accurate portrayal of a personality. Created in 1943 by Katherine Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers, it is a system made up of four basic functions and sub functions that combine to make a personality type. The mother and daughter team constructed it off of Jung s theories (History 2). Based on this system, one of the most common personality types in the US population is called an ESTJ, and one of the least common personality types is called an INFJ. There are many differences and similarities between these two types. An ESTJ personality, overall, is practical, fact based, and outgoing, whereas an INFJ personality is more private and makes decisions based on feelings; however, both are organized people who make good leaders and are capable of great success in roles that involve helping others. One being lack of enough knowledge and information about the number of chromosomes that mammoths possessed. During the experiment, they took frozen samples of ovarian tissue from African elephants and transplanted it into mice. After several days they observed mature follicles develop inside the ovary of the mice. This showed that it was indeed possible to transplant tissues from ovaries of one animal to another (Henry, 2008). Another is to transfer the mammoth nucleus, for this, it is first necessary to remove the elephant s nucleus. Another important component beside nucleus is the mitochondria and it has to be compatible with each other. Even though mammoths and elephants are closely related, there s still a risk. So, the solution that the researchers proposed was to replace the elephant s mitochondria with synthetic ones and this is indeed plausible because mammoth s mitochondria have already been sequenced. While doing this it is also necessary to make sure that there aren t any remains of elephant s mitochondria left inside the cell which might fuse with the newer one. Finally, the last step is to transfer the fertilized egg to a suitable surrogate. The main concern here is whether the surrogate is suitable to harbor the mammoth fetus but evidence gained form preserved mammoths have found that size is not a problem since they are similar in terms of size and height (Henry, 2008). All the steps are just a possibility because when an organism dies, DNA decay starts almost immediately. So, the samples ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Corporate Incentives for Hedging and Hedge Accounting Abstract The aim of this term paper is to supply an analysis on the rationales for corporations to apply hedging and hedge accounting. In order to do so, P. M. DeMarzo and D. Duffie s paper Corporate Incentives for Hedging and Hedge Accounting published 1995 will be reviewed and analysed. This term paper will start with a short review of the literature on corporate risk management and hedging policies and then move on to a description of the model developed by DeMarzo and Duffie and its rationale. Then, their findings and propositions will be presented followed by the conclusion. Literature Review Corporate Incentives for Hedging and Hedge accounting by P. M. DeMarzo and D. In 2008, Muller and Verschoor, published a study on 471 non financial European firrms from the UK, Netherlands, Germany and Belgium. In this study they aim to investigate the informational effect of disclosing derivative positions. It is an interesting matter since European firms did not disclose any of this information until 1990. The study focuses on the usage of foreign exchange derivatives while also investigating the condition in which a firm decides to employ these instruments and to which extent. Even though they have found evidence of the firms using derivatives, their study presented weak results in terms of informative effect of derivative position disclosure. Model DeMarzo and Duffie build a model in their paper in order to illustrate the relationship between investors, accounting information and managers incentive. It involves other factors such as the choice between accounting and economic risk hedging, derivative position disclosure, firm reputation and volatility of managers future wages. To illustrate their interaction consider the following graph: Description of the Model DeMarzo and Duffie s model builds upon the one from Holmstrom and Ricart i Costa (1986). The time frame is two periods. Total profits without hedging after period 1 is denoted as X+ ОёЙ›, where X=a+e+m is a profit component dependent on project quality e and manager s capability a as well as ... • 44. Analysis Of On Going Home In Joan Didion s The Norton... In response to question three in The Norton Reader , I believe that parents today can give their children home. The author of On Going Home , Joan Didion finds herself caught between the sentiments of her life growing up and the realities of her life today. She is wondering if she can give her daughter home like she had. My family consists of my mom, dad, two sisters, and one brother. I am the youngest child of the family. With my siblings being a good deal older than me, I tended to feel left out when they got to do things that I didn t. The age gap left me feeling like an outsider sometimes. As we grew older, the bond between us grew much, much stronger. I think of my siblings more like friends now. They are people that I can tell ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Required Music Education The Need for Required Music Education Over 2.1 million children around the country do not have access to a music education program (Pellegrinelli 2). These students that are not introduced to music education could be able to learn and understand mathematics and reading skills much more efficiently by simply introducing music into their lives (Taylor 2). When involved in music, anxiety and depression levels could decrease as well ( Landmark 1). Music is not required in all schools, and students could benefit from more music education (Braun 1). Even though many students dislike music and think it is too hard, schools should be obliged to require music classes through grade school because students that are actively involved in music gain many ... Music educator Anne Edmunds said, [Music] Exposure also helps with cognitive, social and emotional development ( Mind 1). Though academics are not the only benefit of music, at most times, music will benefit everyone in some sort of academic way. Out of 61 seniors taking piano lessons, all of them showed positive differences in mental and physical areas. This would benefit young people as well ( Landmark 1). Not only does Music for the Mind and Bruhn and Tims show that there are other benefits of music education for students, The Landmark Fletcher Music Study proves that music does help most people. While many may believe that some people s academics may not improve when music education is involved, most people are benefited academically by music education, and there are many benefits outside of academics. While it is true that some adults and students do not take music lessons or classes because they think it is too hard, or not fun, music education is just like many other things. It takes practice and dedication to become better. Many adults take up golf, painting, dance, or other group activities instead. However, with these activities, for them to ... • 46. Frost, By Robert Frost Robert Frost, an indigenous New England poet, is deserving of an ovation for his contributions and magnitude in American Literature. Frost advises his readers to be actively engaged in questioning the world we inhabit (49, Dickstein). In most of Frost s work, readers and critics enjoy his choices of theme, likely being the outdoors and his surroundings. By using emotions recollected in tranquility and his organic and inviolable relationship with his countryside, he celebrates New Englands natural beauty throughout his literature using simple and accessible idioms. Edward Garnett once predicted that Frost was destined to take a permanent place in American Literature which he unquestionably has (40 49). James S. Wilson praised Frost for his abiding humanity and the honesty of his portrayals of people and situations, an honesty that disguises the inherent passion of his work. Like previously mentioned, Frost s themes were often what caught the attention of many. As Morris Dickstein explained in Critical Insights Robert Frost, the core themes were established early on and have remained constant focal points up to the present, though revised and elaborated upon over time (40). Prior to Frost s pursuit of poetry, he had worked on a farm. Having done that, he had many hours on the land, with time to appreciate the green colors and natural sounds and beauty. Robert Frost had educational background, including the renowned Dartmouth College and Harvard University, left his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. Brief History Of Time By Stephen Hawking For the second semester book report I chose to read A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking. Before I started reading I knew what I signed up for. A lot of math, science and complicated stuff that sometimes makes my head hurt. Nonetheless A Brief History of Time is about the history of science, history of how the universe began and how the journey of finding the theory for everything has been going. He talks about some of the theories that may help with finding the theory like the black hole theory, general relativity, quantum mechanics, imaginary time, string theory and many more. He also mentions the belief that people have that god created the universe, that God created everything. The book starts with Stephen Hawking talking about ... A Greek astronomer named Ptolemy agreed with Aristotle theory and made a model that provided a decent accurate system for predicting the places where heavenly bodies in the sky were located. His model was accepted and adopted generally. But then a simpler model made by a Polish priest, Nicholas Copernicus was suggested. His idea was that the sun was still at the center and that the earth and the planets moved in circular orbits around the sun. Two astronomers took this idea seriously Johannes Kepler and Galileo Galilei and they started publicly supporting the Copernican theory. The death of the Aristotelian/Ptolemaic theory came in 1609 when Galileo started to look at the sky with a telescope. When he looked at Jupiter he saw that it was by a lot of small satellites or moon that orbited around it. Johannes then changed Copernicus s theory a bit by suggesting that the planets move in ellipses instead of circles. An explanation came when Isaac Newton published his Philosophiae Naturalis Principia mathematica in 1687. In it he provided a theory of how bodies move in space and time. He also made the complicated mathematics needed to analyze those motions. Then questions were raised like whether the universe had a beginning in time and whether it is limited in space. Edwin Hubble in 1929 made an observation that the galaxies are moving rapidly away from us like the universe is expanding. Then he thought that the universe was really close ...
