Play as a Rehearsal
Overview of his theory
Rogers believed that we behave the way we do because of the way we observe the situation we are
in. He also believed that we have one basic motive and that is to fulfill the potential we have and
achieve the highest we can.
Every individual is unique so we develop in different ways depending on our personalities. Self
Actualization occurs when a person's "ideal self" so who they want to be is consistent with the way
they behave. He says that a person who is actualizing is a fully functioning person, the only way a
person can become self actualized is based on their childhood experiences.
There are five characteristics to a fully functioning person and these are:
1. Open to experience
2. Existential living
3. Trust feeling
4. Creativity
5. Fulfilled life
The western culture critics claim that the fully functioning person is a product of them. In Eastern
cultures they value the achievements of groups then they do a person achieving something
themselves.
How his ideas informs practice and
enables practitioners to support
children’s development
Children and young people develop emerging
abilities and their understanding of the world around
them while they are playing. Children use play to
practice or rehearse their newly acquired skills and
knowledge before putting them into action for real.-

  • 2. Which category did the theorist view the purpose of play as? Play as a Rehearsal
  • 3. Overview of his theory Rogers believed that we behave the way we do because of the way we observe the situation we are in. He also believed that we have one basic motive and that is to fulfill the potential we have and achieve the highest we can. Every individual is unique so we develop in different ways depending on our personalities. Self Actualization occurs when a person's "ideal self" so who they want to be is consistent with the way they behave. He says that a person who is actualizing is a fully functioning person, the only way a person can become self actualized is based on their childhood experiences. There are five characteristics to a fully functioning person and these are: 1. Open to experience 2. Existential living 3. Trust feeling 4. Creativity 5. Fulfilled life The western culture critics claim that the fully functioning person is a product of them. In Eastern cultures they value the achievements of groups then they do a person achieving something themselves.

How his ideas informs practice and enables practitioners to support children’s development Children and young people develop emerging abilities and their understanding of the world around them while they are playing. Children use play to practice or rehearse their newly acquired skills and knowledge before putting them into action for real.- (Taylor 2012:320)
