gryzm comments about this just being another communication tool with its own merits is really good. Its easy to hype things that people don' t really understand yet. Look at Seo 8 years ago and compare it with todays level of understanding. Technology is the enabler, the 'conversation' enabled by Social Media is still very much a human social element that needs careful planning and design in order to achieve engagement with the user.

Well, maybe not bollocks for you, since you seem to consider all the social networking technologies as another new generation of marketing and PR.

guestc2f0624, Word of Mouth and Social Media are not the same thing. You are correct that Word of Mouth advice is powerful. However, an endorsement from a Twitter 'friend' is not necessarily received as WOM; especially if the person really isn't a friend.

The bottom line is this: Social Media is a tool. It joins Television, Radio, Pony Express, Smoke Signals, Post it Notes, Flyers, Text, Bluetooth, Outdoor, Cave Drawings, Tattoos, Letters, Cable, Satellite Radio, Sign Language, CB, Mobile, etc. as forms of media that humans create to communicate. Each is unique. None replaces another, or causes any other form of media to become obsolete.

But as each form comes into existence, a cadre of hypsters often emerges to over-hype the new media and make overstated claims. Sometimes they call themselves evangelists or consultants. I've found a few on this thread.

My recommendation to the current wave of hypsters is to play it cool. Consider what you're saying. It's true that there is real utility and value in social media. As such, the hype isn't necessary. At best the hype discredits the message and the messenger when it is found to be misleading.
