  • The Importance of Phonics 拼音的重要性
  • The Importance of Phonics 拼音的重要性
    • Chinese is a mono-syllabic language - the focus is on mastering the tones, which define the meaning. English is more focused on the sounds. Letters can have more than one sound, and students need to understand the difference in order to progress.
    • Phonics ( 語音 ) can help this process, as 87% of English words have a regular spelling/sound pattern.
    • The 26 letters of the English alphabet make 44 different sounds.
  • The Importance of Phonics 拼音的重要性
    • An understanding of phonics will help children...
    • To recognise differences in sounds.
    • To recognise the relationships between letters (or combinations of letters) and their sounds
    • To work out the pronunciation of most new words
    • To develop their confidence and proficiency in reading and reading aloud.
    • To improve spelling and extend their vocabulary.
  • ‘ Decoding’ New Words 生字讀音的”解碼”方法
  • Decoding New Words 生字讀音的”解碼”方法 When encountering an unknown word, ask your child to point at it. Ask what the first letter is. Croco-what!? THE HUNGRY CROCODILE
  • Decoding New Words 生字讀音的”解碼”方法 Ask your child what sound the letter makes and have them repeat it. The first letter is ‘c’… c-c-c-c! CROCODILE
  • Decoding New Words 生字讀音的”解碼”方法 Break the word up into syllables ( 分音節 ) and have your child attempt to ‘sound out’ and clap each chunk. CRO CO DILE Longer words can be broken up into “chunks” called syllables – many of these little “chunks” are constantly repeated in different words. Each syllable must have a vowel or a “y” 大多數的英文字,都是由一個或以上的音節組合而成。例如 :September, Sep tem ber , 有三個音節。一個音的單位 (unit) 為一個音節 Let’s look at an example… E-pi-dem-ic
  • Decoding New Words 生字讀音的”解碼”方法 Ask them to put the sounds together and say the new word out loud. Crocodile! THE HUNGRY CROCODILE
  • Decoding New Words 生字讀音的”解碼”方法 Use it or lose it! Ask your child to add the new vocabulary item to their home word bank, dictionary or vocab Box.
  • Decoding New Words 生字讀音的”解碼”方法
    • More examples:
    • November
    • Fantastic
    • Computer
    • Monster
    • Comprehend
    • Confetti
Explain the meaning if possible or translate if necessary. Some degree decoding is possible around 87% of the time. Patience is required, but this process will benefit your child each and every time

  • Conclusion 總結
  • When your child reads, don’t just comment on their mistakes. It’s very discouraging! Children learn to read through subtle but unlimited encouragement and reinforcement. 當你的孩子閱讀時, 不要找出他們的錯處,這樣會令他們氣餒的!孩子能否養成閱讀習慣,有賴家長不斷的鼓勵和增強。 Reading aloud and talking about what we’re reading sharpens children’s brains and helps them develop their ability to concentrate at length, to solve problems and to express themselves more clearly. 朗讀和與孩子一起談論讀物的內容能訓練他們的腦筋,幫助他們發展活力、解難能力及表達能力。 Read anytime and anywhere. But also have a routine – same place, same time, same stuffed animals, same book! 隨時隨地閱讀,但應培養習慣 --- 同一地點 --- 同一時間 --- 同一毛公仔 -- 同一書本。 Aim to make reading fabulous and fun. 讓他們從中找出閱讀的奧妙與樂趣!
