This document discusses house styles used in various music magazines. It provides examples of how magazines like NME, Vibe, and Q maintain consistent house styles. Their mastheads are always placed in the same location in a consistent font and size. Color schemes, logo placement, and layouts are also kept consistent to create a cohesive brand identity across issues. Maintaining elements like consistent colors, fonts, and layouts in elements like the contents page and double page spreads helps tie the entire magazine together under a clear house style.

How house style is established
1. Firstly, a house style is a set of rules which
show how other documents should be
formatted. This can be done through:
• The colours which are used
• The font style and size
• Where the logo appears

2. Different music magazines such as Vibe , Nme and Q magazine use their
mastheads as their main house style in their magazines. For example, the NME
masthead is always placed on the top left hand side in every single magazine issue
and the font size and the font style of the masthead are always the same in every
single magazine issue. This acts as a consistent house style in the magazine.
This is quite similar to Vibe magazine because Vibe magazine also keeps the
font style and font size the same in all their magazines however, the font colour
isn’t always the same in every magazine. Furthermore, in theVibe magazine there
is always a celebrity on the front cover which overlaps the “I” or sometimes the “B”
in the masthead of the magazine. Over the years, this has become a part of the
consistent house style used in the Vibe magazine.

3. All music magazines aspire for their magazines to be the best and in
order to do this most magazines always try to keep a consistent house
style in their magazines to make it look more interesting and appealing
to their readers.. For example, Q magazine has its masthead/logo
placed at the button left hand corner on every page in the magazine
except the advertisement pages. This is quite a simple and basic idea
but it creates an effective and consistent house style throughout the
magazine. This is because it links back to the masthead/logo on the
front cover of the magazine.

4. Many music magazines such as Q, Complex, Nme and The Source
always have many consistent elements in their contents page. In Q
magazine the layout is always the same on every single magazine issue
which creates an effective and consistent house style in the magazine
contents page. The Q magazine uses white framing which stands out
from the red colour in the contents page to create this effective house
style.

5. The house style created in the Mixmag is quite clear. The masthead/logo
of the magazine is written in white bold font. Similarly, the same white
and bold masthead is used in the contents page which shows a link in
the house style used between the front page and contents page.
Furthermore, the same white font which was used in the front page of
the magazine is also used in the contents page which creates a
consistent house style in the magazine.
6. Furthermore, another magazine which also uses the same consistent
house style in their contents page is Vibe magazine. The contents page
of Vibe magazine always has the same style in each magazine issue
which is easily noticeable. The word “contents” is split into 3 different
lines and the big “V” which stands for Vibe always blends in with the
background colour of the page. This is quite effective because there
aren’t many different colours on the page which makes the magazine
look more professional and less childish.

7. The house style created in the NME magazine is also quite clear. For
example, the front cover of the magazine mainly uses red fonts and red
elements in the font cover. Similarly, the same red colours used in front
page is also used in the fonts and some elements in the contents page.
This also adds to the consistency of the house style. Furthermore, Both
the front page and the contents page both use the same black elements
which corresponding to each other so this makes the house style quite
clear.
8. Layout is also another important factor which often contributes to the
consistency of a house style. Here, the Q magazine uses a similar layout in
both the double spread and the front page of the magazine. The magazine
places the masthead/logo in a fairly similar position in both the double
page spread and the front page. In addition, the main two colours which
are used in the front page are white and red, these are also the same
colours which are used in the double page spread which is quite effective
because it adds to consistency of the house style.
