Twitter Terminology
• Handle = @browardschools
Above your handle – this describes your
Twitter feed, it will not link people to your
account unless you use the web address:
twitter.com/browardschools.
• Hashtag = #
Organizes your tweets around the topic so
they are easily found by the # -
Hashtag examples: #BCPSProud.
• Followers = Twitter accounts that follow
your account.
• Following = Twitter accounts you follow.
• Notifications = Updates.
• Retweet = RT = You can send information
from another account to your followers.
• Retweet with Quote = You can retweet a
message and add your own comment.
• Likes = You can like a tweet and it will be
linked under your likes. It was formerly
known as favorites.
•Direct Message = @browardschools
If you start a tweet with the @ sign such as
@browardschool. This is a direct reply and
will only be seen by that account.
You will see .@ as the first character in posts,
which eliminates a direct message and
sends the post to all of your followers.

• 140 characters.
• 117 characters if you use up to four photos
(adding media takes 23 characters regard-
