national and international levels in the field of
  documentary heritage preservation and
management : collections of books, manuscripts,
  archives, photographs and graphic works.

 Its services include lifelong training, expertise

  management
 International actions of
  cooperation
 publishing projects
Conservation and restoration of rare and ancient
documents

 The CCL's mission is to restore
   manuscripts, old books and graphic
material. Specializing in the treatment of
   parchment, paper, leather and wood
   restorers CCL master the traditional
techniques as well as the most modern
   techniques.

 Each book restoration is the subject of the
   production of detailed documentation in
order to keep the testimony of the
   processing done during the restoration:
date and place of treatment, photos and
   descriptions before and after restoration,
list of materials used, etc. .
Conservation and restoration of rare and ancient
documents

EXPERTISE
CCL’s services are frequently requested by
 professionals from libraries, archives and
museums for on-site expert consultations in
Europe and abroad by the UNESCO, the UE, the
French Foreign Affairs Ministry, the French
 Culture and Communication Ministry…

Recents expertises have be done for :
   Library of Charfet (2010-2011)
 National Archive of Yemen (2009)
   CITE in Madagascar (2008)
 Khalidi Library in Jerusalem (2007)
 County Council of la Reunion (2005-2006)
 And many others regional libraries and archives…
Digitization and digital library management

Access to collections and
documents is an
essential element in the
enhancement of
heritage. Indeed, it is not
possible to preserve
document without
allowing citizens to
access them.
Digitization and digital library management

 In 2010, the CCL launched its collective and
 patrimonial digital library: e-corpus
 www.e-corpus.org

 E-corpus indicates, identifies, disseminates and
provides access to tens of thousands of objects and
documents belonging mainly to the writing and
 linguistic heritage (manuscripts, archives, books,
newspapers), as well as iconographical heritage and
other cultural objects (photographs, prints, sound
 recordings, videos, artwork).
International actions of cooperation
 The CCL manages several international cooperation projects in the
fields of preventive conservation, heritage enhancement,
management of natural disasters, digitization of collections,
trafficking in cultural objects and language preservation (Manumed,
Studite, Chindeu, Eurindia, Aristhot ...) in the context of close
relationships with various international organizations such as the
Library of Alexandria (Egypt), the Aga Khan Museum (Switzerland)
or the Sakip Sabanci Museum (Turkey).
publishing projects
 CCL publishes or coordinates books on conservation, preservation and
restoration, catalogues of manuscripts, surveys of collections and Art books on
   written heritage.

 The CCL is also director of a collection called “Kitab Tabulae”. This collection is
specialized in the domains of books, archives and libraries in particular in the
Mediterranean space but also all over the world.

Projects and ICT tools
developed by the CCL
 The CCL has developed during various
projects tools based on ICT to train
professionals of library and raise awareness
of the public on issues of heritage
  preservation

    A digital library: e-corpus
 Project of e-learning tool about book
     bindings restoration
 A video game to raise awareness of young
     people

 This are few example on how connect
cultural content to an ICT tool …
A digital library: e-corpus
 e-corpus is a collective digital library that catalogs and
  disseminates numerous documents: manuscripts, archives,
books, journals, prints, audio recordings, video, etc.
 This diverse platform presents cultural diversity worldwide and
specifically in the Euro-Mediterranean region. e-corpus
proposes a variety of themes and a large quantity of digital
documents presented by numerous organizations and
  countries.
 Based on cutting edge technologies, e-corpus offers a simple
and direct public access to a rich collection of resources.

Principal figures :
 2 000 000 document corresponding to approximately 100 000 notices will be
available in e-corpus by the end of 2011
 180 000 visits since the creation of the platform.
 357 952 researches made by the Internet users
 39 virtual collections and 25 available dedicated sites
 An average of 490 visitors per day in 2011
A digital library: e-corpus
 Today, e-corpus includes more than 250 institutions from
  26 countries contributors.
 This platform allows to move to a collaborative form of
publication in which any collection can be enhanced by a
dedicated website with a web address different from the
  database e-corpus.
 This may include:

  • Thematic sites, involving several institutions and several collections
around the same subject, as the digital library on the history of
  photographic techniques: Camera Obscura (www.camera-obscura.org)
  • Sites of organizations (e.g. Libraries) convinced of the advantages of a
  local cooperation between institutions
  • Virtual Collections grouping documents of common interest around
  the same topic.

Project of e-learning tool about book bindings
 In the framework of a new project launch in may
2011, we are developing an e-learning tool about
  Byzantine book bindings.
 Architecture:
 Short introduction about the Byzantine period in general and more
specifically (and detailed) about the Byzantine Binding and
influences in other Cultures (Text + Pictures)
 Videos about the structure and how to realize a binding with the B
techniques, step by step (video + text + schema)
 Presentation of the tool used with an interactive design
 Traditional Atelier - Modern Binding inspire by old Byzantine
      techniques
 Didactic video game: "Build" a B binding with interactive elements

A video game
 This game will appear under the shape of a
succession of enigma to be resolved in which
the player will be the hero of the story. The
player can investigate the mysterious universe
of libraries and manuscripts. While he will
discover new intrigues and new indications,
he will have to make everything to discover an
  old secret of some century.

 Stakes
 Raise awareness of young people about the
written heritage through these two phases.
 Propose the game as an educational tool
and not as a simple entertainment, the
     stake being to remain playful!
A video game
 The game will take the shape of a succession of enigma which the
player will have to resolve one by one.

 The resolution of the enigma must be made by means of teaching
aid, educational tools and watch to increase awareness of the target
    public about the heritage.

The CCL will also develop during the year 2012 a the specific project
about the famous French writer, Jean Jacques Rousseau. A digital
library will be created for this occasion.

Specializing in the treatment of parchment, paper, leather and wood restorers CCL master the traditional techniques as well as the most modern techniques.  Each book restoration is the subject of the production of detailed documentation in order to keep the testimony of the processing done during the restoration: date and place of treatment, photos and descriptions before and after restoration, list of materials used, etc. .

The association is an international center for meetings and exchanges between librarians, archivists, museum curators and conservators. Professionals and recent graduates wishing to develop and adapt to the emergence of new professions and skills could attend specialized training courses  document conservation  treatment of biological damage  disaster planning  patrimonial collections management  use of new technologies, such as digitisation, for preservation and wider public dissemination of collections contents.
