2. Introduction
The reason that I chose to analyse Strawberry Swing
is because although it is a performance based music
video, the lyrics aren’t connected to the performance.
From looking at this well it also looks at the use of the
electronic shaman and how that can bring a third
dimention to the look and feel of a music video.
3. Shot 1
In this establishing shot we see the use of a birds eye
view shot as staff/extras design and draw the set that
is going to be used.
Whilst we see this happening we can also hear the
introduction of the music video being used as being
the start of the day and the usual routine that
someone will go through.
4. Shot 2
In this next shot we see that is seen we get a wide
long shot again being used with the visual edited
effect of the sun being seen getting drawn into the
background and Chris Martin getting up.
You could also say that this style of idea is similar to
the idea of simulated experience as in that audience
members would like the chance to try what is going on
in the music video.
5. Shot 3
So far the audience is still seeing the use of a variety of
mid shots and the wide long shot being used as the
performance continues.
From a lyrical perspective the lyrics ‘they were sitting in
strawberry swing’, could relate to their being a couple that
are in love and that they are innocent and just want to
enjoy life and don’t understand entirely what could be
going on around them.
The ideas that we are also seeing could be thought of as
relating to someone’s imagination like as if they are in a
dream.
6. Shot 4
This birds eye view shot again flirts with the idea of a
child’s imagination as he beats and fights against
animals.
The reference to ‘every body was fighting for’
suggests to the audience that this couple didn’t want
to a waste an opportunity.
The use of the art editing and design is also allowing
to keep the audience visually impressed and make
them want to continue watching the music video.
7. Shot 5
The wide long shot that we now can see could present
the idea and suggestion to the audience as another
theme being shown in the music video with Chris
Martin being apart of some sought of game as well.
So far we have also seen a heavy use of Sven
Carlsson’s theory of the electronic shaman which
suggests that their can be a third type of performance
where you see animated dead objects being shifted
through time.
8. Shot 6
By using this shot of the French revolution it links back
to the album of Viva la vida and is one of the
consistent themes that will you will be able to see
throughout the whole music video.
You could that this music video could have a surface
without surface, which is another thing that Carlsson
said this is because visually the video looks good but
apart from that the video doesn’t really have a
meaning behind it.
9. Shot 7
The lyrics ‘the sky could be blue, I don’t mind, without
you it’s a waste of time’ repeats and suggests to the
audience again about this couple however though that
the mood maybe changing and the strong relationship
that they had will be changing.
So far we have seen a lot of editing however it hasn’t
been done commonly as in that it is always being cut
to the beat quickly and repeatedly to the beat. It’s
cutting dependant on how the story is going.
10. Shot 8
The wide long shot can be used with the animated
female to show the love relationship and now although
they are dancing from what you see that could be
Chris Martin imagining that as being someone that
he’d want to go out with.
The lyrics again suggesting ‘without you it’s a waste of
time’ re emphasis the idea of love and not being able
to cope on your own.
11. Shot 9
In this final shot all that we can see left is the painting
through the use of this birds eye view shot.
Just as the video finishes he gets up and walks off the
set, which shows the transition from between the
animated character that we had perceived him to be
for the majority of the music video. This just puts into
context how you can get focused on a music video
and so drawn into it.
