CLTAWA members at the conference.
CLTFA 20th National Conference
This year’s conference was held at Mel-
bourne Grammar School on the 5th and 6th
July. This year’s theme was Celebrating
and Looking to the Future 《回顾与展望》.
A total of 10 CLTAWA members attended
this year. These conferences prove to be a
fantastic opportunity to network with other
Chinese teachers from across Australia and
offer ideas to take back to the classroom.
Next year’s conference will be hosted by
the Chinese Language Teachers’
Association of South Australia.
Year 9 Day Excursion
A total of 8 secondary schools
were in attendance at South
Perth Community Hall on June
6th for the Year 9 Day excursion.
Highlights included the Kung Fu
presentation, jianzi making, Chi-
nese calligraphy, chopstick races
and Chinese trivia.
Pandas’ Picnic Excursion
This year’s Pandas’ Picnic was
held on Tuesday June 3rd. 10
primary schools participated in
this event held at
South Perth
Community Hall.
Schools involved
include Bannister
Creek, Highgate,
John Septimus
Roe, Methodist
Ladies College,
Morley, Noranda,
Oberthur,
Redcliffe, Rossmoyne, Weld
Square primary schools.
Students were involved in
activities that encouraged usage
of Mandarin to communicate as
well as Chinese art and craft
making. It was a spectacular day!

Members Social Gathering
CLTAWA’s first event for 2014 was a members
social gathering held at Shelley Foreshore in
celebration of Chinese New Year on Saturday 15th
February. There were fifty attendees made up of
members’, their families and invited guests. With
lots of food and giveaways this event marked a
great start to a busy year ahead!
Principals & Teachers Cocktail
This event encouraged school leaders and
teachers to network in a relaxed setting at The
Boulevard Hotel Floreat with good food and drinks.
Held on Wednesday March 12th there were over
40 attendees. Invited guests included representa-
tives of the WA Department of Education, Associa-
tion of Independent Schools WA, Catholic Educa-
tion Office, WA Primary Principals’ Association,
Modern Language Teachers’ Association of WA
and the Confucius Institute.

Development
On Monday February
24th two workshops were
held at Oberthur Primary
School in Bull Creek.
Libby Tuckerman was the
first presenter introducing
the Chinese Language
Learning Space an online
platform available to all
Australian teachers of
Chinese. Kylie Farmer
ran the second workshop
focusing on CLIL
(Content & Language
Integrated Learning): its
potential, successful
strategies for the CLIL
classroom, challenges
and showcasing
examples of effective
CLIL programs.

Competition
The Kurrajong Lecture
Theatre at the Confucius
Institute, UWA was the
venue for this year’s
State Chinese
Background Students
Story Telling Competition.
Held on Saturday March
29 students ranging from
4 to 18 years old from
Primary, Secondary and
Community schools
competed in 7 separate
categories. All of the
participants set a very
high standard making it
difficult for the judges.
