Present Tenses - Review
There are 2 ways (2 verb tenses) to talk
about the present in English:
• Simple present
• Present progressive (or present
continuous)

Talking about the present:
Simple present:
1. He is hungry.
2. They like pizza.
3. She knows a lot of people.
4. Leaves fall off the trees in autumn.

Simple Present: Subject + base verb
use –s for he, she, it,
Her dog barks. She reads. This pen writes.
I walk. They drive.

Talking about the present:
Present progressive:
1. What are you doing now?
2. The teacher is talking at the moment.
3. Music is playing somewhere.

Present Progressive: be + -ing
I am verb + -ing
He is verb + -ing
They are verb + -ing
He is brushing his teeth. I am waiting for you.

When do we
use these forms?

Simple Present - Review
1. Use with non action verbs (verbs with no movement):
a) state: be, seem, appear, exist
b) possession: have, own, possess
c) feelings & needs: like, love, hate, feel, want, need, wish
d) thought: think, believe, know, imagine, understand
e) the senses: see, hear, taste, smell
**Non action verbs don’t make the present progressive

2. For facts: and true statements:
• It snows in Winnipeg during the winter.
• The sun rises in the east.
• People breathe air.

1. For ongoing actions:

Simple Present - negative
2 ways to form the negative simple present:
• Adding “not” after the “be” verb OR
• Adding don’t (do not) for I/you/they/we
OR
• Adding doesn’t (does not) – for he/she/it
before the simple form of the verb.

  • 3. Present Tenses - Review There are 2 ways (2 verb tenses) to talk about the present in English: • Simple present • Present progressive (or present continuous) 3
  • 4. Talking about the present: Simple present: 1. He is hungry. 2. They like pizza. 3. She knows a lot of people. 4. Leaves fall off the trees in autumn. 4
  • 5. Simple Present: 5 How to form the simple present: Simple Present: Subject + base verb use –s for he, she, it, Her dog barks. She reads. This pen writes. I walk. They drive.
  • 6. Simple Present: 6 How to form the simple present: Simple Present: Subject + “be” verb am, are, is I am in Alberta. You are in Winnipeg.
  • 7. Talking about the present: Present progressive: 1. What are you doing now? 2. The teacher is talking at the moment. 3. Music is playing somewhere. 4. I am watching the snow fall. 7
  • 8. Present Progressive 8 How to form the present progressive: Present Progressive: be + -ing I am verb + -ing He is verb + -ing They are verb + -ing He is brushing his teeth. I am waiting for you.
  • 9. Simple Present vs. Present Progressive: When do we use these forms? 9
  • 10. Simple Present - Review 1. Use with non action verbs (verbs with no movement): a) state: be, seem, appear, exist b) possession: have, own, possess c) feelings & needs: like, love, hate, feel, want, need, wish d) thought: think, believe, know, imagine, understand e) the senses: see, hear, taste, smell **Non action verbs don’t make the present progressive 10
  • 11. Simple Present- Review 2. For facts: and true statements: • It snows in Winnipeg during the winter. • The sun rises in the east. • People breathe air. 11
  • 12. Simple Present - Review 3. For schedules and things that happen regularly. • The # 10 bus leaves at 12:15 pm. • Classes begin next week. • The post office opens at 9:00 am. • I play pickle ball every Saturday. • We shop on the weekends. 12
  • 13. Simple Present - Review 4. For situations that are (more or less) permanent. • He is married. • She works in a bank. • They live in Winnipeg. • I like coffee. 13
  • 14. Present Progressive - Review When do we use the present progresive? 1. For ongoing actions: • The dog is sleeping. • It is raining outside. • Are you listening to me? 14
  • 15. Present Progressive - Review When do we use the present progressive? 2. To talk about future planned events or intentions: • Sam is leaving in the morning. • After lunch, I am going shopping. 15
  • 16. Simple Present vs. Present Progressive: How do make these forms negative? 16
  • 17. Simple Present - negative 2 ways to form the negative simple present: • Adding “not” after the “be” verb OR • Adding don’t (do not) for I/you/they/we OR • Adding doesn’t (does not) – for he/she/it before the simple form of the verb. 17
  • 18. Simple Present - negative 2 ways to form the negative simple present: NOTE: If the base form of the verb took an “s” (for he/she/it), we drop the “s” when forming the negative. She reads. She doesn’t read. 18

  • 20. Present Progressive - Negative Adding “not” after the “be” form of the verb,and before the -ing verb: • Sam is not leaving in the morning. • After lunch, I am not going shopping. • The students are not studying. 20
