1. Mapping the problem
• Know the company
• Know the product / service
• VP, customers, users, functionalities…
• Context, interfaces, interactions with other elements
• Know the problem / challenge
• ONE, and NARROW
• Problem to solve or opportunity to explore
• Why is that a problem? Why that opportunity?
• Already tried to solve it? Outcomes? Lessons learned?
• Expected Solution
• Expected output (what are you expected to deliver? A CAD file?
A 3D printed component? A report? A filled canvas?
• Conditions and work boundaries (geometries, materials,
economics)
• KPI, success requirements
1.1 Expert interview
1. Mapping the problem
• Start at the end: clarify what’s the final
outcome the company wants to
achieve? Describe the world without
the problem

1. Mapping the problem
A method to capture company’s inputs:
use the formula «HOW MIGHT WE» to take notes, e.g.:
• HMW utilize only recyclable material
• HMW keep weight below 150 g / reduce mass of 2%
• HMW have the design bear a 45 kg load (structural)
• HMW have the new design fitting the interface with
element x? (system constraints)
• HMW account for the… (assembly constrain)
• HMW make it possible to keep the service open 24h?
These are going to be your requirements / design goals

Sort, cluster and consolidate all HMWs into a shared vision, and possibly
priorityze

1. Mapping the problem
Google it!
• You work alone (diverge): search on the web, get
inspired by similar products, also in other industries
(these will be raw material for your ideas of solution)
• Write insights as HMW on stiky notes
• What exactly writing on HMW notes? Features,
functionalities, requirements, you would like to see in
the solution
1.4 Get inspired
Showcase
• Each member gives a 1 min tour per each product
mapped, highlighting what’s interesting about it.
• Sticks HMWs on a whiteboard. No decision /
debate
Then (converge):
• Cluster HMW organize them thematically
• Use dot voting to prioritize the most importants

1. Mapping the problem TO SUM UP!
• Understand Company, Product, Challenge
• Understand Expected results and long term goal
• Take notes of design requirements (HMW)
• Get inspired online
• Diverge individually and converge at a team level
