5. l.Introduction
Nowadays there are many people, who learn different foreign languages.
Everybody understands that it is necessary for a modern person.
A great number of parents want their children to be successful in future life. That
is why their children visit different additional classes. Some parents don’t think about
abilities of their children. For example, two brothers of the same age visit English
school. One boy is always ready for the lesson, he is active and teachers don’t have
problems with him. But another boy isn’t concentrated and can’t do exercises,
because material is difficult for him. They are of the same age and they have a lot in
common. Why is one boy good at studying and another boy isn’t? What should
parents do in this situation? How can we determine, what abilities this person has or
don’t have?
When we observe how people work, study, talk with somebody, live in joy and
grief, we, of course, pay attention to differences in their behavior. Some are slippy
and impetuous in their movements, nimble in the emotional reactions; others are
impassive, slow, dispassionate with tarnish expressed feelings and etc. The reason of
these differences hides in temperaments and abilities of people, given to them by
nature.
It is generally known, foreign language is a very difficult subject, because it is
necessary to assimilate rather big, not easy for regimentation of lexis units of work;
polysemous and multifunctional grammatical facts; complication of conditions of
dialogic communication and auditory practice, which we don’t study in native
language. It is good to have abilities, which are given by nature to overcome these
difficulties.
The article «The conception of profile tuition in senior step of school education»
[2] says: «The profile tuition means variability and individualization of teaching,
which due to changes allows taking into consideration abilities, interests and habits».
In Gymnasia a lot of pupils choose foreign language as a profile
6. subject. It is important to take into account abilities. But how can the pupil determine
if he has these abilities or doesn’t have? There isn’t clear answer to this question. That
is why the theme of our research work is «Influence of types of temperament on
learning foreign languages».
The basic aim of the given project is to determine the influence of types of
temperament on learning languages.
Object: the process of learning English.
Subject: the types of temperament.
Hypothesis: The learning of foreign languages will be successful if:
• types of temperament and their specialties will be included in process of
teaching;
• psychological climate for successful communicative result in tuition will
be created;
• it will be organized the conditions for studying languages according to
pupils’ temperaments;
• training situations for development of speech will be proposed in tuition
according to pupils’ interests.
The aim, object, subject and hypothesis caused the following tasks of research:
1. To study available sources of the information on the given theme.
2.
To analyze all types of temperament and determine their influence on
studying foreign languages.
3.
To do interrogation to determine types of temperament of pupils, teachers of
English, and senior pupils of faculty of foreign languages.
Methology:
There are two main methods of gathering information: collecting secondary
data, information that already exists, and primary data, information collected for the
specific purpose at hand.
Making the project, we should remember that any humanitarian knowledge has
been ideologised, and language as a conductor of ideology brings a special loading in
this work.

2. Main Part 2.1.
What is Temperament?
Temperament - is persistent combination of personality’s individual qualities.
Individual rhythm and speed of psychical processes, grade of feelings’ stability, grade
of volitional effort are characteristics of temperament. The type of temperament is
connected with specialties of high nervous activity. When we talk about temperament
it means a lot of psychical differences between people, differences in
intensity, stability and impression of emotions, energy of action, special behavior and
special intellect. Temperament characterizes dynamics of a person, but it doesn’t
describe his opinions, sights, interests, it isn’t indicator of person’s value, it doesn’t
determine his possibilities. Temperament appears in the childhood, it isn’t added to
fosterage [7].
2.1. History of types of temperament
The founder of the doctrine about types of temperament is the ancient doctor
Hippocrates. He gave first classification of temperament more than 2500 years ago.
He thought that there were four basic «juices» of life - blood, phlegm, bile, black bile.
Proceeding from his doctrine most famous after Hippocrates the doctor of
12. antiquity Klavdiy Galen (Клавдий Гален) has developed first typology of
temperaments, which he stated in the known treatise «De temperamentum».
According to his doctrine the type of temperament depends on prevalence in a body of
one of «juices» [8].
The names of 4 types of temperaments, given by names to these «juices», are
kept today. Cholerically temperament occurs from word «bile», sanguine - from the
word «blood», phlegmatic - from the word «phlegm» and melancholic occurs from
the word «black bile». This fantastic concept had huge influence on science during
many centuries. Hippocrates and then Galen explained the temperament of a person as
domination of some liquid.
Sanguine person is possessor of evenly, agile type of nervous system. «Trust but
check» is his formula.
Choleric person is unbalanced type. His formula - «no minute to the rest».
Phlegmatic is a person with forceful, but obstinate mood. His words - «don’t
hurry».
Melancholic is a person with feeble mood. His Formula - «Don’t deserve».
[6]
It was the first doctrine about temperaments. But there were many other
scientists, who learned and worked about temperaments of people. For
example, Russian teacher, doctor, anatomist wrote that basically temperament
depends on circulation of the blood. So, we see that all first conceptions about
temperaments were connected with «juices» of organism. Of course, we can’t say that
these speculations totally devoid substance, but they didn’t indicate the essential of
temperament. We should know that namely temperament depends on our
minds, brains, and of course, habitat has influenced our type of temperament [7].
2.2. Types of temperament
a) The Sanguine Person
The sanguine person is a person, who is extremely active, sociable, and has
comparably easy life through misfortunes and disagreeable. He easily meets new
13. people and adapts toward new circumstances. He has broad circle of
acquaintances, but he doesn’t constant in communication and he often changes his
mind. The Sanguine person is very productive. He is able to work hard, when he has
many interesting tasks. If this person has nothing to do, he will become boring and
sluggish. He should have occupation, because when he is busy, he will have a good
mood and vital tone. He works bad, when he has monotone work, because the
sanguine is impatient and clumsy[7].
b) The Choleric Person
The choleric is a person, who has extra life energy. He is active, initiative, but he
hasn’t got enough self-control, that is why he is impatient and can conflict with
others. This person can’t do one task for a long time, because he loses the interest.
Lack of balance of nervous system explains sharp changes of the mood. The choleric
has problems with any kind of work, which demands quietness and slow
speed, because he will show his impatience. He is short-tempered and sharp in
communication. The person of this type o f temperament doesn’t listen to opinions of
other people. He needs the job, connected with necessary official journeys and
meetings with new people [7].
c) The Melancholic Person
The melancholic person isn’t active and sociable. There is sometimes anxiety in
his behavior. He also has feeble endurance. The Melancholic is afraid of new
situation. If he meets new people, he will lose his nerves. That is why the job, which
needs communication with people isn’t for him. He is vulnerable, in the humor for
strongly feelings relatively insignificant failure. The least difficulties make him cry.
But in the usual situations the melancholic is mild, friendly, kindly, sensitive and
observant person. When he works, he needs support and possibility to the rest[7].
14. d) The Phlegmatic Person
The person of this type of temperament is calm, always reserved, he is persistent
of patient, self - controlled. He is hard to new people and he gets used to people
slowly and difficult. He can’t talk with them in the nearest time and because of this
reason the phlegmatic has not got so many friends as a sanguine person. Even in the
most difficult situations, we can’t s ay that he has problems, because he doesn’t show
his feelings. He is seldom blows up. The phlegmatic can do work to the bitter end.
The person of this type works well in quiet situation [7].
2. 4. Influence of type of temperament on learning English language
In the last paragraph we researched defining features of each type of
temperament. We want to determine exactly how temperament reveals in process of
teaching and especially in learning English language.
The Sanguine Person.
The person of this type of temperament speaks quickly with articulation. He has
loud voice and follows speech with lively expression. He is cheerful, active and
hardworking. His position is very spontaneous. It is always necessary to maintain his
interest because, if he is boring, he begins playing with pens, pencils and looking for
outside affairs. The sanguine people can easy understand new material. They are
communicative and often they are at the top of the stuff. The Sanguine is an
extrovert[1].
The Choleric Person.
The choleric introduces quickly, passionate speech with discursive intonation
and vivid, meaningful expression. Their gestures are fitful. We can describe the
position of typical choleric as «the wish to jump on». If he does important work for
him, he pays attention to it, but if he isn’t interested in it, he can’t work, and unless he
rebuilds the energy he won’t work. The choleric is extravert[1].
15. The Melancholic Person.
The melancholic person has quite voice. Also the person of this type possesses
not rhythmic speech; usually it is down to murmur. He is shy, modest, not active, and
incommunicative. His head is often down and his chin pulls in. Outwardly he is calm
that is why we can confuse him with phlegmatic. However melancholic has definite
features (§2.2). The melancholic is introvert[1].
The Phlegmatic Person.
The speech of phlegmatic is calm, slow, without clear emotions, expression and
gestures. There are a lot of pauses in his speech. He is quiet, silent, and slow. When
lesson finishes, he won’t stay on his seat. The phlegmatic is introvert [1].
We described and found out differences in speech, behavior, in the process of
teaching of every temperament. Also we can see that there are two new
characteristics: extrovert and introvert. It is typology of people of Swiss psychologist
and psychotherapist. The word «extrovert» occurs from «extra» -«outward», «out»
and «vertere» - «turn in». So, extrovert is a person, concentrated on people. The word
«introvert» occurs from the word «intro». According to it, introvert is a
person, concentrated in his own world.
The cholerics and sanguines are extroverts.
The melancholics and phlegmatics are introverts.
The famous psychologist V. S. Merlin maintains that we can judge about
typological specialties by «live marks». For example, extroverts begin talking from
the
seat,
but
introverts
raise
hand
and
wait,
when
they
are
asked.
Extraverts, especially choleric, don’t like exercises with writing, and they often don’t
finish it. Introverts like to work with books, to write, they try not just to draw out a
scheme of oral communication, they try to write it totally. The boys - extroverts elect
working with dynamical tuition training situations. Introverts, especially girls, choose
statical situations[3].
16. To sum up extroverts are people, who easily work with people, teach
them, translate their speech, serve them and etc. Introverts feel more comfortable
themselves working with books, documents than with people. The first type of people
easier studying at school process and learn foreign languages, because in any situation
they put into practice their spoken speech. We decided to check our supposition in
practice.
Let’s describe definite features of extroverts and introverts. (Appendix 1)
We held the testing between teachers of English language in Gymnasia №2 to
find out the domination of temperament. We use the questionnaire of Ayezenk
(Appendix 2). There are six teachers in English in our school. It is interesting that 4
teachers are extroverts. Another two are introverts, but the results of the questionnaire
are near to results of extraverts. And the last two has mixed temperament melancholic and choleric. (Appendix 3) As we see the results of the test says that the
dominant type of teachers of English language is extrovert.
We decided to know the temperament of my classmates and then compare types
of temperament with marks, which they have in English (Appendix 4). I was surprised
by the number of choleric pupils in my class. It is interesting to know that the majority
of pupils, who are extroverts, have good marks. Of course there are some choleric
pupils, who have not so good marks. In the last part of testing we gave the text with
the tasks (Appendix 5) for pupils with different type of temperament and asked them
to do it. We paid attention that extroverts (choleric and sanguine) made tasks
faster, and then introverts. But when we checked their works we saw that mistakes
and level of knowledge are practically similar.
Also we gave testing for pupils, who study at humanitarian class. We asked 20
pupils. The majority of pupils are extroverts. This result supports that cholerics and
sanguines have abilities for learning humanitarian science.
When we told about temperament and we often used the word «ability». The
temperament and abilities of person are connected.
Psychologists research the problem of abilities. Let’s describe their opinions. A.
N. Leontev determined the «ability»: «The wide determination of abilities
17. consists of features of individuals, which designated success of working. This
determination is interesting for us, because we have recommendations how to
determine abilities: a) in complex and b) in development. The second (b) quality
assures and binds over us: we can and we should work at them [4].
I.A. Zimnya expands conception of Leontev, «success of working», as working
means learning of foreign languages. She thinks that success of acquirement of
languages includes the speed of accumulation lingual resources for expression
thoughts; in lightness and automatic of combinatorial versions for expression
thoughts; in improvement of using of all speech types [5].
It is necessary to create positive psychological climate on the lesson of foreign
language. It means to create conditions, where pupils want, not afraid of
communication with teachers and each other, understand how they should work and
anticipate their communicative result. Important component of creating good climate
on the lesson is tutorial-speech situation (TSS). The right selection of TSS can be
effective and useful for pupils and for teachers. It is necessary to pay attention to
abilities of pupils, when teachers choose TSS. The right selection of situation role
opens wide possibilities for individual development. It is important that roles should
have the same qualities as the pupil do. The good role in tutorial¬speech situation can
allow pupils to dream up, tide over timidity [1].
18. 3. Conclusion
The foreign language is much easier for communicative people to learn, They
are called extroverts -those who can easily come into contact with people/ They like
to talk with them, ask about something, to recount about yourself. It does n’t mean
that people with other types of temperaments are introverts, who are much reclusive,
silent, like «to talk» with a book, make mistake s or when they chose the foreign
language as a profile language. Question is in what orbit they suppose use the
knowledge of language: if they want to be linguists, translatosr of literature, scientists,
who use knowledge of foreign languages for getting information, and etc. they will
have success in this professions. To be honest, it is useful for linguists to check the
abilities of people in different fields of science. For those who want to work with
people, to become teachers of foreign languages, interpreters, work in service and etc.
the difficulties can face the difficulties. However we can’t forecast difficulties only by
one sign - type of temperament. There are many other conditions, which influence
learning foreign languages. In our research work we found out that sanguine and
choleric types of temperament have predisposition for studying languages, but of
course, they need to develop them. The phlegmatic and melancholic people can
successfully learn languages, but they need more time and efforts for learning it.
Also we descried how the process of communication in foreign language is made
informal and joyful. To our mind the good tutorial-speech situations have influence
psychological climate in the lesson. But when teacher chooses it, it is important to pay
attention to qualities and abilities of each person.
At the end of our research work we want to say that there are not good or bad
types of temperament. Each type of temperament has its own advantages and
disadvantages. Every person can learn languages and be successful in it.
