THEORIES OF
MODIFICATION
OF INSTINCTS
ASHNA ANILKUMAR
INSTINCTS DIE THROUGH DISUSE
•ACCORDING TO THIS THEORY BAD/
UNDESIRABLE TENDENCY(INSTINCTS) CAN BE
ELIMINATED THROUGH DISUSE .
EG: CHILDREN WITH THUMB SUCKING HABIT, MAY
GIVEN UP THEIR HABIT BY ADDING BITTER
TASTING COMPOUNDS ON FINGERS OR ARMS
ARE PLACED IN SLEEVES THEY CANNOT BEND
NEGATIVE ASPECT OF THIS
APPROACH
 No guarantee that unused instinct would die out
 Chance of reappearance of the eliminated behavior
METHOD OF PUNISHMENT
 Punishment is the imposition of an
undesirable outcome for a bad instinct
(behavior/action)
 It is intended to decrease or eliminate
the occurrence of undesirable behavior
 punishments to teach self-control,
increase desirable behaviors and
decrease undesirable behaviors.
NEGATIVE ASPECT OF THIS
APPROACH
Some times it may not develop right
response
Children are unable to feel cause and
effect of relationship of punishment
ALLOW FULL FREEDOM TO
CHILDREN
 Here, children are allowed to behave unrestrictedly so that they
could understand undesirability of behavior through their
experiences.
 It is child centered approach
 Rousseau and other naturalists are the main proponents of this
approach
Negative aspects of this
approach
It may lead to the
formation of undesirable
habit
Freedom of one child
clash with of another
THEORY OF SUBLIMATION
 It is the widely accepted /most scientific mode of instinct
modification
 Here unacceptable behavior /actions guided or redirected into
socially acceptable actions or behavior
 It involves change of ideas and attitudes
EXAMPLES OF SUBLIMATION
Child with anger issues,
admitted to a boxing club
A child desirous running away
from home may satisfy this urge
by reading travel books
