The Sleeper
Chance Clifford English 1301 Ms. Klotz October 26, 2016 Edgar Allen Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston Massachusetts. You could
say that he is one of the 'fathers' of poetry. Many people think that Poe was an alcoholic that abused women, this was only after his death (October
7, 1849) where his rival Rufus Griswold wrote a sort of obituary portraying Poe this way. The purpose of the obituary was to tarnish Poe's work, but
in fact it only ended up increasing the sales. "the Sleeper" is about a dead woman, Irene, whom the narrator is in love with. His love is so passionate it
follows her into the after–life. "the City in the Sea" is about a quiet city in the west that gets encompassed by death and doomed to hell. There are both

These are evident in both "the Sleeper" and "the City in the Sea". The dark and morbid tones go hand in hand with the presence of death in each
poem. The atmosphere of death is significantly different in these poems. The tone of "the Sleeper" depicts death as peaceful and heavenly, whereas
the tone in "the City in the Sea" conveys death to be brought from hell. Poe uses phrases in "the Sleeper" like "Heaven have her" and "Beauty sleeps"
to portray the blissfulness of death in this poem. "Down, down that town shall settle hence/ Hell, rising from a thousand thrones/ shall do it reverence."
(Poe "the City in the Sea"). Poe uses internal rhyme to emphasize the fact that the city is being condemned to

Sleeper Curve: The Evolution Of Pop Culture
Most everyone from previous generations have come to believe that forms of entertainment in today's society–from approximately thirty years ago to
now–has somewhat corrupted or put off the progress of the current generation. Though many forms of entertainment are the main reasons for our
current society's procrastination, Johnson states that today's pop culture is educational. It exercises the mind and brain in ways we don't even realize.
Over the course of thirty to forty years, pop culture and media has changed significantly, enhancing the way we think and live our lives. Johnson
proposed a theory called the "Sleeper Curve", which basically states that current U.S. society is influenced intellectually by popular media. Through his
text, he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Johnson had mentioned many times how much more detailed popular culture is today, and that includes today's television programs and movies.
There are more details and characters to follow, and there are more complicated plots out there. This is where Johnson tells us about Lord of the
Rings and Star Wars, and he points out how much more there is to follow compared to shows and movies before the 1970s. This is how we are able
to hold so much more information at one time, Johnson implies. He also explains how even movies from the 1900s compared to the early 2000s are
a bit simpler, with less to follow. Johnson gives us children's films as examples–such as Bambi (1942), Mary Poppins (1964), and Finding Nemo
(2002). The release dates of each of these movies are spread a far way apart, which is a part of the reason why their plots are different, even if the set
up is not. More details must be kept track of the more recent the movie. Johnson explains that over time, while the generation grow with the movies, the
creators "build distinct layers of information into their plots, dialogue, and visual effects, creating a kind of hybrid form that dazzles children without
boring the grownups"

Movie Analysis : The Dog
The 1997 Barry Levinson's film Wag the Dog narrates its viewers a story about the successful rescue of the US President's reputation that has been
stained substantially. The President was involved in a sexual scandal eleven days before the election, according to the film's plot. In order for him to
be re–elected for the second term, extreme measures were taken by a Hollywood film producer Stanley Motss (Dustin Hoffman) and consultant Conrad
Bean (Robert De Niro) to raise the ratings of the acting President and defend him against his main opponent.
Different reactions were caused by the film by various media representatives across the US. The film was treated as a prophecy because of the two
subsequent events that followed: the sexual scandal that surrounded Bill Clinton and the military conflict in the Balkans (the fact that the film
highlighted Albania was somehow overlooked). These reactions have provoked a wide discussion on the subject of "materialization of thoughts" and
the interrelation between art and reality. Is it the reality that inspires people to create art, or, on the contrary, it is art that influences reality? In other
words, can the tail wag the dog? There exist many opinions and many answers to this question. However, undoubtedly, this is a discussion that lasts for
ages, and it was certainly initiated long before the film by Barry Levinson was released.
The film received a warm reception from critics. In my opinion, this is due to the fact that the

Tiger Sharks Research Paper
What do Sharks eat?
Introduction
Sharks consume prey to live; similar to all living organisms, food is needed for survival. Sharks are found in waters all over the world and they
come in a variety shapes and sizes. Some sharks are as small as a human hand and some sharks can be the size of a small to medium boat. The size,
environment, and characteristics of the shark, will dictate what food the shark prefers. Generally, people think sharks will eat anything that it comes
into contact with, but that is not the case. As a rule, humans are not a food source for sharks, although it is hard to comprehend due to the amount of
shark attacks. In reality, sharks kill a considerable amount less humans than humans kill sharks. Sharks have a way of ... Show more content on

In some coastal habitats, bonnetheads are the dominant shark species and potentially occupy top–tier trophic levels (Bethea et al.). Crabs, lobsters,
shrimp, other crustaceans, cephalopods, other mollusks, and plant material were all found in the stomach of Bonnethead sharks in the Northwest
Florida, Tampa Bay, and Florida Bay studies. In Northwest Florida, adult bonnetheads fed mostly on crabs, whereas in Florida Bay, adult bonnetheads
fed mostly on other crustaceans and cephalopods (Bethea et al). Bonnethead sharks are one of the smaller hammerhead species; ranging from two to
five feet in length, known for their semicircular head. It is not know if the plant material found in the stomach of the bonnethead is due to the shark
eating it intentionally or if the plant gets consumed as the bonnethead is eating the crab, shrimp or other food sources on the bottom of the ocean

Restorative Justice In The Movie Sleepers
Restorative vs. Retributive Justice
Name

The movie 'Sleepers' describes the lives of four boys, Tommy, Michael, Shakes, and Johnny. In an attempt to steal a hot dog cart, the cart rolls down
the street almost killing an elderly man. The four boys are taken to a collective center, Wilkinson Home for Boys. The young boys are sentenced to
serve terms of between twelve to sixteen months. (Fried & Reppucci 2001)
The YouthCriminal Justice Act was made into a law and applies to young people aged between 12 and 18 years who have broken the law. The Youth

As we later see in the movie, the retributive system did not work for the well of the boys as it did not reform their behavior in any way. In jail they
are beaten, abused and raped by guards, these acts are much more heinous than what they had been sentenced for. The acts of being raped and abused
turned them into worse criminals than they were. Ten years down the line, they become members of The West Side Boys gang. The boys have
transformed into not only drug users but murderers as well. Them being murderers is demonstrated by Tommy and John killing Nokes, who was one of

Communication Theories by Werner Joseph Severin Essay
Werner Joseph Severin explored communication theories on a wide range through this book, and as our lives are based entirely on communication
persuasion is used daily in different forms, based on different theories, aiming at changing our attitudes and directing them towards the desired
outcome, therefore chapter 8 "theories of persuasion" focused on persuasion. As being exposed to new information every day and changing our
attitudes accordingly persuasion has reached its goal, for example, if you like something and new information you have been exposed to changed your
attitude towards it, then this is a successful persuasion communication. Persuasion can affect our beliefs as will, as what you believe to be true can be

The research involved a number of variables that are manipulated very carefully to note there effects. Additionally, according to Hovland attitudes are
learned and are changed through the same process of learning.
The experimental section of the research branch of the war department's information and education division evaluated studies of films already existing,
and had experimental studies where two versions of the same film were compared, the second type of research set the way for the rest of the attitude
change research. The first task that this section took upon as evaluating the first four films of a series of films called "why we fight", which was
designed to motivate American soldiers to fight in the war. This research became part of the evidence suggesting that strong held attitudes are less
likely to change because of one mass communication message. On the top of that researchers began then to examine attitude change due to the
cognitive process, which means that receivers of the message actively think about the message and change their attitude. But more recent theories
reveal that a number of variables working together at the same time results in attitude change. furthermore, to change attitudes there are specific
techniques to follow, the first technique is the one–sided and two–sided messages, which is basically either presenting one side of the message

The Criminal Justice System In The Film 'Sleepers'
After watching the movie "Sleepers" I believe the main characters entrance into the criminal justice system was too harsh of a punishment. The fact
that these young boys made a foolish mistake, did not mean their sentencing had to be jail for no less than 18 months. However, I do believe there
could have been some less sever consequences that they should have taken into account, like community service, and or probation, given this was their
first offense. Furthermore, I believe these boys were a combination of both, born to become criminals and made criminals in a distinctive way. They
were born into these criminal attributes by having abusive fathers in the house, or not having fathers present in their lives at all. Moreover, the society in

Social networks is another of Johnson's concept that contributes to the Sleeper Curve theory. Social networks are an element to the Sleeper Curve
theory. In explaining how social networks benefit television viewers, Johnson writes, "This, too, activates a component of our emotional IQ,
sometimes called our social intelligence: our ability to monitor and recall many distinct vectors of interaction in the population around us" (107). By
this, Johnson means that as viewers follow an episode, our minds are working to make connections of relationships. The social web from the early

The documentary film The Grim Sleeper contributes to our social class by providing examples of sociological problems. Which takes us into the path

Essay on Deviance in the Film Sleepers
Deviance in the Film Sleepers
Deviance is the behavior and the standards of expectations of a group or society. It is also behavior that is considered dangerous, threatening or
offensive. The people that are deviant are often labeled to be weirdos, oddballs, or creeps. In the United States, people with tattoos, drug addicts,
alcoholics, and compulsive gamblers are all considered deviant. Sociologists believe that everybody is deviant from time to time. They believe each
person will violate a social norm in certain situations. People are considered deviant if they don't stand for the national anthem at a sports event, dress
casually to a fancy restaurant, or skip classes. One category of deviance is Crime. Crime is a violation of norms ... Show more content on

Involvement is the amount of time or energy you spend on legit conventional activities. Belief is whether or not a person believes in moral validity of
the law and their respect for authority.
In Sleepers the boys were all deviant. One instance in particular of being deviant is stealing the hot dog. All four of the boys were laying on top of a
roof on a hot summer day with nothing to do. They were all hungry and bored when they saw the hot dog vendor standing on the corner. Michael
asked the boys if they wanted to steal a hot dog to get food. The boys at first did not want to do it, but then they thought about it and realized they
didn't really have anything to lose. The worst that they thought could happen was that they didn't get any hot dogs. The plan was that one of the
boys would up and asks for a hot dog. Then after he is handed the hot dog from the vendor he runs off. This leaves two options for the vendor. One,
he can let boy run off with the dog. This would be good because then they would have gotten that one hot dog for free. The second option the vendor
has is to chase the boy. This doesn't sound good but it is actually better. If the vendor goes to chase him then he leaves his hot dog cart all alone for the
other boys to go through and get all the free hot dogs they want. By thinking this all through the boys thought they had nothing to loss and the reward
would be much greater than the lose could be. The boys Attachment factor is very low. The

The Sleeper By Edgar Allan Poe Essay
A life full of pain, heartache, desolation, misery. Nobody thought such beautiful writing could come from any of this. Edgar Allan Poe presents a new
outlook on death by showing that love extends beyond the reaches of life in his jam–packed poem, "The Sleeper".
Orphaned at the age of two after his mother dies of tuberculosis and father abandons him.
Poe lives a relatively normal childhood, attending school and acquiring a good education. Later, Poe enrolled at the University of Virginia and
became in debt. He gambled to try and pay it off but only wound up in even more trouble and eventually had to drop out of school. After losing his
friends, money, and family, he briefly joins the military at West Point. After that Poe looked to writing full time. His career as a literary critique and
his life in general improve after he publically marries his younger cousin Virginia Eliza Clemm Poe. He loved her tremendously and lived with her until
she died of Tuberculosis in her mid 20's. After this is when Poe spirals back into a depression and begins drinking and gambling again. After a long
and depressing life of misfortune and grief, Edgar Allan continued writing stories of sorrow ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Especially after his wife Virginia passed. In his poem "The Sleeper" he writes about "her sleep" (Poe 45). The theme he conveys is that their love
has no end. Although Poe is still alive and recognizes that Virginia is dead, he still pleads "Soft may the worms about her creep!" (Poe 47), proving
that he will always care for her with all his heart. As an author, Poe has found ways to connect his real life with his writing in a way that
encompasses exactly what he means to say in such an eloquent way. He connected ideas of Greek mythology to his poems to represent a theme of
memory and forgetfulness. "Looking like Lethe," (Poe 13) is the Greek spirit of forgetfulness, showing that Poe will not forget Virginia even though

Grade Point Average Research
Sleep Affects Your Grade–Point Average, More Than You Think
Introduction
Research has shown that one's grade point average is directly correlated to one's sleep (Chiang, 2014; Hershner & Chervin, 2014). Along with that,
sleep affects one's grade point average through a psychological standpoint, as in the brain's functionality (Kelly, 2001; Milan 2005). Where on the other
hand, others say that sleep length have nothing to do with grade point average at all, it's due a lack of commitment to work and study hard, in an
efficient way. (Hershner & Chervin, 2014; Milan 2005). Yet, many students lack sleep and hurt their gpa's doing so, with no adjustments being made to
change. With the overwhelming amounts of studies that are being examined is why ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There three types of sleepers according to Kelly (2001). The three types being short sleeper, average sleepers, and long sleepers. The three types
described are the lengths compared to the average time a student should sleep. The idea behind Potts–Datema (2005) is that students who sleep for
sometime should be fine. The length can vary, but if a student gets some time to sleep is fine, because they at least get some sleep, no matter the
length they sleep. Kelly (2001) also found the out of the three type of sleepers that the short sleeper, the ones who sleep less than the average time
they should, that they have the lowest grade point average compared to the other two types. Also, the average sleepers, who sleep the average
time and the long sleepers, who sleep longer than the average time they should, both have significantly higher grade point averages. But, between
the average and long sleepers, the long sleepers have a slightly high grade point average. Therefore, the length of sleep is necessary to a higher
extend, than just being able to get some time to sleep. Also, the reaction and response time of the student depends on the length of which they sleep
(Chiang 2014; Kelly, 2001). They both also found that the reaction and response time of a short sleepers are more delayed than an average and long
sleepers are. Also, a long sleeper has the best reaction and response time, due to they got to rest and regain their energy back, and not be drowsy like
short sleepers would be and sometimes an average student would. They have more time to rest their whole body and mind, to be refreshed when

with apparently over 25 known victims is still in the trial phase while a cameraman and Nick Broomfield, a "reporter" scrutinize and expose more
secrets about the killings, the motivation behind the killings, and the people involved. The investigation requires the interrogation and assistance of

The area in which the killings have taken place is a full of corruption, drug abuse, prostitution, inefficient law enforcement, and a common disregard for

for their own safety, Lonnie's friends and the people of the community end up gladly giving up all the information they have for the investigation.
From the first couple of days on the investigation, the crew has learned that Lonnie actually has a "good" reputation in the community. People love
him, his friends, strangers, prostitutes, they all just... Love him? Well, it turns out that his amazing reputation, is basically just a cover up. He seemed

Courbet The Sleepers Essay
In spite of a plethora of artistic movements and periods, one trope has persisted throughout the course of Western art– the nude woman. The champion
of Realism, Gustave Courbet, was no stranger to painting the nude. Yet, by the middle of the nineteenth century, the nude was no longer beholden to
the Greco–Roman tradition nor to the antiquated tastes of academic art. Courbet's realist nude was a rupture from the idealized figures shown in
classical sculpture and the convention of peinture d'histoire. The prevalence of perfectly constructed bodies, characterized by slender figures and
defined musculature, was overshadowed by a new take on the genre. Closer examination of Courbet's nude paintings, however, reveals a precarious

5). The painting shows the languid bodies of two women lovers wrapped in a sensual caress. The artist juxtaposes two voluptuous women, one
dark–haired and the other with golden hair – a prevalent motif in nineteenth century eroticism, which is also echoed in another of Courbet's double
nudes, Venus and Psyche (fig. 6). In The Sleepers, Courbet exploits the nude as an erotic device to depict a scene of lesbianism. He does not conceal
the sexual nature of the image, but instead amplifies it. Every aspect of the painting exudes desire. The skin of the women is clammy; they are heavily
fatigued; their heads are nestled together in a gesture of intimacy – all of which is indicative of "an intense romantic struggle." Perhaps more so than
The Origin of the World, the viewer is left to examine the painting from a voyeuristic position. It is as if the viewer has intruded upon a private scene
of raw intimacy between the women. Thus, it is not merely the context of the scene that lends the painting its erotic quality, but how Courbet renders his

Analysis Of The Song ' Hush Yael ' By Oh, Sleeper
Art is the expression of creativity and imagination primarily for emotional or beauty purposes. When most people think of art, they might think of
popular paintings or pictures like the Leonardo Da Vinci 's "Mona Lisa" or Vincent Van Gogh 's "Starry Night". Art can also include drawings,
pictures, songs, poems, architecture, literature, or just about anything else that someone can use to express themselves. What makes most art effective
or meaningful is its purpose, how it inspires an emotion, and how aesthetically pleasing it is. In other words, art is effective if it has some sort of
impact on others. The song, "Hush Yael" by Oh, Sleeper, very clearly demonstrates all of these qualities. "Hush Yael" is effective in conveying its

In a newspaper article, Kaiser wrote "I will never forget the joy and the hatred in their voices as they swaggered about hunting for us, firing their guns
and throwing grenades." But soon Yael, being the 2–year–old she was, started making noise. Kaiser, knowing that if they heard Yael they would surely
find and kill all of them, firmly covered Yael's mouth to quiet her. Later after being saved by police officers, Kaiser found out that in her attempt to
save the others in the crawlspace, she ended up smothering her own child; hence the title of the song "Hush Yael" was inspired. The fact the song
is based around such a tragic story makes it effective in evoking feelings of dread, sympathy, remorse, disbelief, and even a little bit of anger. The
perpetrators were after all, eventually freed from prison in 2008 (Solomon). In this way, this specific piece of art promotes an emotional effect from
those who understand the backstory. Though the majority of the song retells a real story, the story isn't the main, central message. In the chorus, it
says "So lift your voices high, higher than the mountains of their spite. We are, we are the fearless, the ruthless, the heroes of our time." What this
means is that since we have the ability to speak out, we should speak out for those who are not able to and be the 'heroes of our time'. The song also
has a line where it states "We must rise for the helpless and fight for their justice." This line

Counting Street Sleepers
Those who sleep on the streets go unnoticed by many United States citizens. According to the article "Counting Street Sleepers" written by E.W., in
2014 there was as many as "1.49 million people" who slept in shelters, "and 578,424 were recorded as being without shelter." Even though fixing these
numbers is common knowledge and something most can agree upon, there is a lack of solutions or effort. Granted, the shelters have been showing
improvement, and there are states taking larger steps to work towards ending homelessness. But the pace is inadequate. There are thousands who need
shelter and food, and they stretch across the age bracket. From children and adolescents, to college students, to adults and veterans returning from war.

population on a single night each January." They then claim that the numbers are annual, instead of point–in–time, meaning that "the actual count is

expensive supportive housing and into housing of their own or with family members when their well–being improves." It's a good point. So many of
Utah's citizens could have had housing by the time the state was done faking the country out. The extra effort put would have gone to people

The Title Says It All. The Sleeper In This Case Would Be
The title says it all. The sleeper in this case would be yours truly.I was sleeping my life away. I was sleep on who I was, who I had become and

Sleeper Curve Argumentative Analysis
Many people love to look back older movies and television shows. Shows like The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Murphy Brown and Frasier that we
consider "quality entertainment" may not be as good for us as we once thought (Johnson 2005). This is not bad news though– just because quality
entertainment of the past may not be that good for our minds, television shows today have more cognitive benefits than we think. Using the "Sleeper
Curve" theory, media theorist Steven Johnson effectively argues for a change in what people consider "cognitive junk food" and what is "nourishing"
for our minds (Johnson). Johnson's formal diction and contemplative tone helps the audience understand his theory. Johnson opens the article with a

Over the past fifty years, television has increased the demands on the same mental abilities. Johnson says that "this growing complexity involves three
primary elements: multiple threading, flashing arrows and social networks," (Johnson). Johnson explains that multiple threading began in 1981 with
Hill Street Blues. Hill Street Blues weaves together a collection of up to ten distinct threads throughout the episode. Johnson shows the readers a
graph of the narrative thread throughout a typical episode of Hill Street Blues. Johnson shows the reader another chart for "the most ambitious show
on TV to date, The Sopranos," which "routinely follows up to a dozen distinct threads over the course of an episode" (Johnson). By providing these
charts, Johnson shows his readers a portrait of the Sleeper Curve over the past thirty years in popular television. Before Hill Street Blues, the golden
rule among television executives was that audiences were not comfortable following more than three plots in each episode, but within just three
decades shows like The Sopranos have become popular because of the multi–threaded plot lines. Johnson believes that because of this burst in narrative
threads, the amount of "flashing arrows", inserting something in the script that reduces the amount of analytic work on the viewer, have greatly
decreased. He says

Sleeper Cell Research
"I could never forget that time in my life; I would have lost my mother, my father, my brothers and my sisters. My parents had a gun pinned to their
head; I begged the sleeper agents to let them go, but they demanded money. Sleeper agents had threatened my family to give them a large amount of
money or they would kill us. The police would not help us; we had no choice but to run away. I took my mother and my sisters and escaped to Delhi.
My father came later with my brothers, but by then the sleeper cells were killing our relatives trying to find us. We had nowhere to go; we often spent

The Between Groups Design And The Cross Sectional Design...
Summary Hypothesis If a person participates in many daily activities, exercises early daily scheduling, has consistently scheduled social rhythms, and
partakes in activities with active social engagement, then the person will self–report that he or she is a good sleeper. Methods In the study, the
between–groups design and the cross–sectional design were used for research. There were 243 participants between the ages of 18 and 39, and the
majority were females and Caucasians. The average age was about 21 years old. The measurements used were the Social Rhythm Metric, the
Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the Beck Depression Inventory, Second Edition. The PSQI was used to measure perceived sleep quality within
the past month. Once the Sleep Quality Index was obtained, the participants were categorized as good sleepers (5) based on scale ranging from 0 to
19. The SRM was used to assess social rhythms. The overall activities performed by a test subject, the number of activities performed involving social
interaction, and the number of activities involving minimum to no social interaction were analyzed. The SRM also tracked the regularity of activities,
so a "hit" meant an activity was performed within 45 minutes of the habitual time. The BDI–II was used to calculate participants' levels of depression.
Participants would be trained to use the SRM, then they would be given 14 days of SRMs. The diary was to be returned after the 15th day. Thus, 2

'E Pluribus Norm In Walt Whitman's The Sleepers'
The latin term 'E pluribus unum'; out of many one, critically identifies the formation of state in the 19th century America. It is important to identify
how many can become one without difference or sacrifice in a society which was divided by slaves, soldiers and laborers. Throughout his poems, Walt
Whitman exalted the human body and the human spirit. His straightforward poetic style, illustrated a want in America's growth as he appropriates the
American ideal of 'E pluribus unum'; a technique which serves as a democratizing device and a pattern which involves many and one. This technique,
which whitman is recognised for, has a distinct relation with American culture. It is through this ideal, which weaves a universal system of unity and
diversity. In relation to 19th century literature, Betty explores the contradicting aspects of 'E pluribus unum' as she suggests that it erases and denies
the historical context of American reality and inequality. This essay aims to analyse and address the literary works of Whitman and Melville, who both

Californian Grim Sleeper: Substandard Community
The documentary about the Californian Grim Sleeper presents the political corruption, substandard education, and apathy within impoverished
communities. It portrays and analyzes how a community could allow for such crimes to take place. It shows that these problems are sustained through
police corruption, absence of funding, and political embezzlement. These problems are exacerbated when the government does not pay attention to its
own decomposing communities. The material conditions present within a substandard community ultimately create a cycle of poverty and crime when
they are confronted. It is not difficult for one to recognize and ascertain that this blatant disregard for crumbling communities is what allows for such

In Tales of the Grim Sleeper, many topics and issues we have learned in sociology are present, such as deviance, corrupt justice systems, and racial
inequalities. The video is about serial killer, Lonnie David Franklin Jr., who is also referenced as the Grim Sleeper. Deviance is shown in the
beginning of the when it talks about crime rates in the ghettos of Los Angeles, which is a reference to the connection between location and deviance.
During the process of the video there are also multiple times where the L.A.P.D. was in the wrong, such as not telling the neighborhoods about there
being a serial killer and not interviewing everyone that needed to be interviewed. Racial inequality also frequently comes up, especially when the

The physical qualities of the film made the story's tone and message come across quite clearly. The color, live action shots, background noises,
historic footage, and subject interviews gave a very realistic outlook at how the south end of Los Angeles actually is. Another thing that made the
film very informative was how the camera and audio was used. It contributed to the tone of seriousness, especially when they did the private
interviews with a black background and just light hitting the subjects. These parts of the film make the viewer's thoughts and ideas be biased to one
side of the story. I personally think that it was making the viewer feel sorry for Lonnie and his friends. Overall, however, the film does
communicates its message of the reality of those parts of Los Angeles quite well. The only weakness to the effectiveness is its biased persuasion. The
best thing about this film is that you can gain more information about the event, rather than gaining little information from an article. The voices and
reality of the interviews in the film gives an experience that just reading won't give you. The film was well executed and got the point across, and if

Five Stages: The National Sleep When The Human Brain
Bedtime Minds One third of a human's lifetime is spent sleeping, and six years is spent dreaming that is more than 2100 days. Dreams are series of
images, ideas, emotions, and sensations that occur in the mind during certain stages of sleep. There are many myths based on the ideas of why the
human brain dreams. Many believe that what happens in the brain at night is the experiences that the human body goes through during the daytime
while the body is awake putting it all together into one's dreams while the body is at rest at night. However, reams affect, and are affected by, daily
life. How it all begins, the working of dreams, the foundation of dreaming all starts with REM sleep, where all the dreaming takes place. The National

is marked by jerky eye motions called rapid eye movement..." (McPhee 22), also known as REM sleep. REM sleep occurs in cycles of about 90–120
minutes throughout the sleepers' night, and it accounts for up to 20–25% of total sleep time in adult humans (Mastin). Most dreaming occurs during
this stage. REM sleep is characterized by eye movement, increasing respiration rate and also increasing the sleepers brain activity. REM sleep is
also referred to as paradoxical sleep because, while the brain, other body systems, and parts become more active, the person's muscles become
more relaxed, or almost in a paralyzed state. Dreaming occurs because of all the increased brain activity happening in the sleepers brain, but
voluntary muscles become paralyzed. Voluntary muscles are those that are needed to move by choice (Mastin). This period of paralyzation is a part
of stage five because it is for protective measures to keep the sleeper from harming themselves at night from the dreaming occurring. In stage five is
where the most vivid and memorable dreaming is going to occur for the sleeper a in any other stages "You may have images float by in earlier stages,
particularly when you are going through Alpha or Theta, but the actual dream state occurs in REM" (Mastin). Therefore this is due

that. Some studies have shown that humans who are more sensitive, creative, or imaginative are more prone to having nightmares ("Psychology
Today"). It may be because they are more in tune with their surroundings, which causes them to have more nightmares than usual. Another thing that
might cause the sleeper to have nightmares is the food they eat before bed "That extra food means that your body is going to boost its metabolism

When a person dreams more than they usually do out of the blue, the roots of the symptom could be brought on by hormonal changes, chronic
pains or getting too hot or cold at night. When a person feels too hot or cold in during their sleep, it can cause them to dream too much and the
dreams are easily remembered once the sleeper has been woken up. Hormonal changes or pain during a woman 's menstruation and other times
when experiencing chronic pain can also cause dreaming more than usual. If person tends to wake up in between the sleep in the night this means
that they will remember the dream once they wake up, unlike those who do not wake up during the night. They are going to most likely forget their
dreams in the morning when they awake. Oscroft added, " few sleepless nights or nights with very little sleep would also result in a night full of
vivid dreams" (Kaur). Therefore the very few hours the sleeper gets to sleep during the night they are most likely to have very vivid dreams. Another
health issue which is linked to sleeping is, Sleep Apnea. This health disorder presents as interrupted breathing while the sleeper is at rest. It usually

Rick and Morty is an underrated yet highly praised show that encompasses and represents the idea of Johnson's Sleeper Curve theory. The program
focuses on Rick Sanchez, an alcoholic and unconventional scientist, and his grandson, Morty Smith, a rather naГЇve and good–hearted high school
student. Through each season, the two go on a variety of misadventures, with Morty often traumatized in the end. Typically, there is another scene
dealing with familial issues going on, with the show cutting between the two. However, the heavy emphasis is placed upon Rick and Morty, since they
are the eponymous characters of the show. Although the series is animated sitcom, its intended audience is definitely adults, since the majority of the

always has so much going on with a wide variety of characters. With the simple premise and counterargument of it not needing to be viewed
sequentially, it made for an initially difficult beginning, since I had no idea where to go or what scene to pick. I argued that Rick and Morty did
make you smarter, since it has the type of humor that is much darker and requires thinking or comprehension to understand and truly understand. I
found the easiest part to be describing the show and pointing out smaller details that attributed to it being an example of the Sleeper Curve. I found
the scene dissection to be the most difficult, since the show is hard to explain over text because of the humor and smaller moments (recurring jokes or

The Sleeper by Edgar Allan Poe
The Sleeper, by Edgar Allan Poe, was first published in the Poems of 1831; this poem has since been revised from its current version which was
printed in 1845. This poem was written during the Romanticism Period. This time period is defined as a time in which poets began to "rebel against
the Neoclassical restrictions and dominance of reason as poetic aim. Romantic poetry celebrated the imagination over rationality, passion, and dreams
over reason and external reality, and isolated individuality over collective humankind. Romantic poetry looked to celebrate both the supernatural and
elevate the commonplace." (Henriksen) Poe's imagination prevails in this lyric poem. The speaker of the poem experiences an internal conflict while

He is concerned for Irene, asking her if she is afraid of being in this place. He wonders why she is dreaming in this place, and of what. The speaker
says that she must be from a far away land, because even the trees are left to wonder about her. He comments on the peculiarity of how white her
skin is, how strangely she is dressed, as well as the length of her hair is off setting to him. He is addressing her as if she will respond to him, which
is another use of apostrophe. He is seemingly disoriented by her lack of courteousness; she will not answer his questions. The introduction to Irene
being placed in the second stanza is important because it allows for a mood to be created, for the poem to establish an emotional investment for the
speaker; we must first get a vivid image of the external surroundings. Poe constructs a mystical setting for his poem which conveys the music in the
speaker's soul. He does this by using alliteration in the first stanza, "And, Softly, dripping, drop by drop. The sensuality of these descriptions conveys
how he feels about Irene. Once we are introduced to the slumbering beauty we can see he is concerned for her soul. His probing questions with an
expectation of an answer haunt us into the realization that his love transcends through the confines of death. Poe uses iambic tetrameter in this poem,
which allows the flow of the poem to captivate the reader into this fantastic setting. The rhyme scheme of

Ecocriticism In Captain Of The Sleepers
Captain of the sleepers has been published in 2002 and translated, then published in U.S. in the year 2005. It is story which revolves around Andres

boy is portrayed as an adult, who goes to meet the captain to know the mysterious around his mother's life and death because of the affairs. The
chapters keep on alternating between the past and the present. In his sixty two years oldness Andres Yasin comes to the island called St. Croix. This
particular island and the hotel where he stays act as a medium in retrieving his memory about the incident that has happened in this island, and the
island of Vieques inhabited by his family, in his childhood days. The novel shifts to the past. In doing so, he narrates each and every scene that revives

Summary Of Neil GaimanThe Sleeper And The Spindle
Sometimes growing up does not always mean that one can no longer enjoy anything room one's childhood. A stubborn seven–year–old looking to be
like the "big kids" might argue that they are too old for bedtime stories; that they have out grown them what they see as being meant for the younger
children. Not everyone, however, is a stubborn seven–year–old. Just because they are older does not mean that someone cannot enjoy something that
they were fond of in their childhood; it simply means that they will likely enjoy it in a different way. The same is true with fairy tales; a person's
understanding of a tale evolves as they get older. As a person has had more experiences and learned to think more critically, they are likely to have
different ideas on tales than they would have when first hearing them at a young age. They do not grow too old or become too sophisticated for
fairy tales, they simply become able to have more sophisticated and complex interpretations of them. If people thought themselves to be too
sophisticated for fairy tales it would follow that fairy tales would be abandoned for children altogether. Instead, fairy tales and folklore are still
studied as pieces of literature and continuously adapted to fit the current times. Neil Gaiman's The Sleeper and the Spindle shows the importance of
fairy tales today by weaving together old familiar stories and modern ideals into a single tapestry. Neil Gaiman chooses to introduce the tale of Snow
White to the tale of

Walt Whitman's Interpretation Of The Sleepers
The definition of the word "individual" describes the separation of, and difference between, one subject in relation to another. This makes it easy to
define something solely by its distinctions as opposed to its connection to the thing from which it is distinguished. This is a useful tool to have in
language but can prove problematic when used between human beings. Walt Whitman knows this and tries to tackle the problem in "The Sleepers."
The poem seeks reconciliation by allowing readers to accept and experience universality the way Whitman does in his other works such as "Song of
Myself". In "The Sleepers," Whitman muses about how others sleep before drifting to sleep himself. He moves from a state of thinking based on his
imagination to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In these sections, he is in a state of deep sleep because he fully embodies his subjects. He sees through their eyes but thinks and responds as himself.
In section 3, Walt watches a "beautiful, gigantic swimmer" as he is dashed "head forward on the rocks" until the man is killed. As Walt watches the
gruesome scene, he can't help but admire the man even as his life escapes him. In line 80 he stops referring to a person but to a body. Walt also
questions and further personifies the ocean. In line 74 he asks, "What are you doing, you ruffianly red–trickled waves?" and even, uses verbs like
"swing" and "bear" as if the ocean was assaulting the old man with hands. Section 4 begins with a stricken element where Walt immediately
recognizes his surroundings and decides to experience the dream anyway. Whitman's tone in this section is more straightforward than it previously
was, which is made clear by his use of language. His descriptions of the setting are violent and his response is no longer curious as feels the "razory
ice–wind," looks "where the ship helplessly heads end on," and "hears the howls of dismay" (Lines 83–85). He has nothing to say to the sea and the
only thing he can do is help collect the bodies the next

The Sleeper

  • 1. The Sleeper Chance Clifford English 1301 Ms. Klotz October 26, 2016 Edgar Allen Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston Massachusetts. You could say that he is one of the 'fathers' of poetry. Many people think that Poe was an alcoholic that abused women, this was only after his death (October 7, 1849) where his rival Rufus Griswold wrote a sort of obituary portraying Poe this way. The purpose of the obituary was to tarnish Poe's work, but in fact it only ended up increasing the sales. "the Sleeper" is about a dead woman, Irene, whom the narrator is in love with. His love is so passionate it follows her into the after–life. "the City in the Sea" is about a quiet city in the west that gets encompassed by death and doomed to hell. There are both similarities... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These are evident in both "the Sleeper" and "the City in the Sea". The dark and morbid tones go hand in hand with the presence of death in each poem. The atmosphere of death is significantly different in these poems. The tone of "the Sleeper" depicts death as peaceful and heavenly, whereas the tone in "the City in the Sea" conveys death to be brought from hell. Poe uses phrases in "the Sleeper" like "Heaven have her" and "Beauty sleeps" to portray the blissfulness of death in this poem. "Down, down that town shall settle hence/ Hell, rising from a thousand thrones/ shall do it reverence." (Poe "the City in the Sea"). Poe uses internal rhyme to emphasize the fact that the city is being condemned to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Sleeper Curve: The Evolution Of Pop Culture Most everyone from previous generations have come to believe that forms of entertainment in today's society–from approximately thirty years ago to now–has somewhat corrupted or put off the progress of the current generation. Though many forms of entertainment are the main reasons for our current society's procrastination, Johnson states that today's pop culture is educational. It exercises the mind and brain in ways we don't even realize. Over the course of thirty to forty years, pop culture and media has changed significantly, enhancing the way we think and live our lives. Johnson proposed a theory called the "Sleeper Curve", which basically states that current U.S. society is influenced intellectually by popular media. Through his text, he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Johnson had mentioned many times how much more detailed popular culture is today, and that includes today's television programs and movies. There are more details and characters to follow, and there are more complicated plots out there. This is where Johnson tells us about Lord of the Rings and Star Wars, and he points out how much more there is to follow compared to shows and movies before the 1970s. This is how we are able to hold so much more information at one time, Johnson implies. He also explains how even movies from the 1900s compared to the early 2000s are a bit simpler, with less to follow. Johnson gives us children's films as examples–such as Bambi (1942), Mary Poppins (1964), and Finding Nemo (2002). The release dates of each of these movies are spread a far way apart, which is a part of the reason why their plots are different, even if the set up is not. More details must be kept track of the more recent the movie. Johnson explains that over time, while the generation grow with the movies, the creators "build distinct layers of information into their plots, dialogue, and visual effects, creating a kind of hybrid form that dazzles children without boring the grownups" ... • 3. Movie Analysis : The Dog The 1997 Barry Levinson's film Wag the Dog narrates its viewers a story about the successful rescue of the US President's reputation that has been stained substantially. The President was involved in a sexual scandal eleven days before the election, according to the film's plot. In order for him to be re–elected for the second term, extreme measures were taken by a Hollywood film producer Stanley Motss (Dustin Hoffman) and consultant Conrad Bean (Robert De Niro) to raise the ratings of the acting President and defend him against his main opponent. Different reactions were caused by the film by various media representatives across the US. The film was treated as a prophecy because of the two subsequent events that followed: the sexual scandal that surrounded Bill Clinton and the military conflict in the Balkans (the fact that the film highlighted Albania was somehow overlooked). These reactions have provoked a wide discussion on the subject of "materialization of thoughts" and the interrelation between art and reality. Is it the reality that inspires people to create art, or, on the contrary, it is art that influences reality? In other words, can the tail wag the dog? There exist many opinions and many answers to this question. However, undoubtedly, this is a discussion that lasts for ages, and it was certainly initiated long before the film by Barry Levinson was released. The film received a warm reception from critics. In my opinion, this is due to the fact that the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Tiger Sharks Research Paper What do Sharks eat? Introduction Sharks consume prey to live; similar to all living organisms, food is needed for survival. Sharks are found in waters all over the world and they come in a variety shapes and sizes. Some sharks are as small as a human hand and some sharks can be the size of a small to medium boat. The size, environment, and characteristics of the shark, will dictate what food the shark prefers. Generally, people think sharks will eat anything that it comes into contact with, but that is not the case. As a rule, humans are not a food source for sharks, although it is hard to comprehend due to the amount of shark attacks. The first task that this section took upon as evaluating the first four films of a series of films called "why we fight", which was designed to motivate American soldiers to fight in the war. This research became part of the evidence suggesting that strong held attitudes are less likely to change because of one mass communication message. On the top of that researchers began then to examine attitude change due to the cognitive process, which means that receivers of the message actively think about the message and change their attitude. But more recent theories reveal that a number of variables working together at the same time results in attitude change. furthermore, to change attitudes there are specific techniques to follow, the first technique is the one–sided and two–sided messages, which is basically either presenting one side of the message ... • 7. The Criminal Justice System In The Film 'Sleepers' After watching the movie "Sleepers" I believe the main characters entrance into the criminal justice system was too harsh of a punishment. The fact that these young boys made a foolish mistake, did not mean their sentencing had to be jail for no less than 18 months. However, I do believe there could have been some less sever consequences that they should have taken into account, like community service, and or probation, given this was their first offense. Furthermore, I believe these boys were a combination of both, born to become criminals and made criminals in a distinctive way. They were born into these criminal attributes by having abusive fathers in the house, or not having fathers present in their lives at all. Moreover, the society in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They were all hungry and bored when they saw the hot dog vendor standing on the corner. Michael asked the boys if they wanted to steal a hot dog to get food. The boys at first did not want to do it, but then they thought about it and realized they didn't really have anything to lose. The worst that they thought could happen was that they didn't get any hot dogs. The plan was that one of the boys would up and asks for a hot dog. Then after he is handed the hot dog from the vendor he runs off. This leaves two options for the vendor. One, he can let boy run off with the dog. This would be good because then they would have gotten that one hot dog for free. The second option the vendor has is to chase the boy. This doesn't sound good but it is actually better. If the vendor goes to chase him then he leaves his hot dog cart all alone for the other boys to go through and get all the free hot dogs they want. By thinking this all through the boys thought they had nothing to loss and the reward would be much greater than the lose could be. The boys Attachment factor is very low. The ... • 12. The Sleeper By Edgar Allan Poe Essay A life full of pain, heartache, desolation, misery. Nobody thought such beautiful writing could come from any of this. Edgar Allan Poe presents a new outlook on death by showing that love extends beyond the reaches of life in his jam–packed poem, "The Sleeper". Orphaned at the age of two after his mother dies of tuberculosis and father abandons him. Poe lives a relatively normal childhood, attending school and acquiring a good education. Later, Poe enrolled at the University of Virginia and became in debt. He gambled to try and pay it off but only wound up in even more trouble and eventually had to drop out of school. After losing his friends, money, and family, he briefly joins the military at West Point. After that Poe looked to writing full time. His career as a literary critique and his life in general improve after he publically marries his younger cousin Virginia Eliza Clemm Poe. As an author, Poe has found ways to connect his real life with his writing in a way that encompasses exactly what he means to say in such an eloquent way. Grade Point Average Research Sleep Affects Your Grade–Point Average, More Than You Think Introduction Research has shown that one's grade point average is directly correlated to one's sleep (Chiang, 2014; Hershner & Chervin, 2014). Along with that, sleep affects one's grade point average through a psychological standpoint, as in the brain's functionality (Kelly, 2001; Milan 2005). Where on the other hand, others say that sleep length have nothing to do with grade point average at all, it's due a lack of commitment to work and study hard, in an efficient way. The three types being short sleeper, average sleepers, and long sleepers. The three types described are the lengths compared to the average time a student should sleep. The idea behind Potts–Datema (2005) is that students who sleep for sometime should be fine. The length can vary, but if a student gets some time to sleep is fine, because they at least get some sleep, no matter the length they sleep. Kelly (2001) also found the out of the three type of sleepers that the short sleeper, the ones who sleep less than the average time they should, that they have the lowest grade point average compared to the other two types. Also, the average sleepers, who sleep the average time and the long sleepers, who sleep longer than the average time they should, both have significantly higher grade point averages. But, between the average and long sleepers, the long sleepers have a slightly high grade point average. Therefore, the length of sleep is necessary to a higher extend, than just being able to get some time to sleep. Also, the reaction and response time of the student depends on the length of which they sleep (Chiang 2014; Kelly, 2001). They both also found that the reaction and response time of a short sleepers are more delayed than an average and long sleepers are. • 16. Courbet The Sleepers Essay In spite of a plethora of artistic movements and periods, one trope has persisted throughout the course of Western art– the nude woman. The champion of Realism, Gustave Courbet, was no stranger to painting the nude. Yet, by the middle of the nineteenth century, the nude was no longer beholden to the Greco–Roman tradition nor to the antiquated tastes of academic art. Courbet's realist nude was a rupture from the idealized figures shown in classical sculpture and the convention of peinture d'histoire. The prevalence of perfectly constructed bodies, characterized by slender figures and defined musculature, was overshadowed by a new take on the genre. Closer examination of Courbet's nude paintings, however, reveals a precarious line on which the artist balanced in depicting a "real" woman versus an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 5). The painting shows the languid bodies of two women lovers wrapped in a sensual caress. The artist juxtaposes two voluptuous women, one dark–haired and the other with golden hair – a prevalent motif in nineteenth century eroticism, which is also echoed in another of Courbet's double nudes, Venus and Psyche (fig. 6). In The Sleepers, Courbet exploits the nude as an erotic device to depict a scene of lesbianism. He does not conceal the sexual nature of the image, but instead amplifies it. Every aspect of the painting exudes desire. The skin of the women is clammy; they are heavily fatigued; their heads are nestled together in a gesture of intimacy – all of which is indicative of "an intense romantic struggle." Perhaps more so than The Origin of the World, the viewer is left to examine the painting from a voyeuristic position. It is as if the viewer has intruded upon a private scene of raw intimacy between the women. Thus, it is not merely the context of the scene that lends the painting its erotic quality, but how Courbet renders his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 17. Analysis Of The Song ' Hush Yael ' By Oh, Sleeper Art is the expression of creativity and imagination primarily for emotional or beauty purposes. When most people think of art, they might think of popular paintings or pictures like the Leonardo Da Vinci 's "Mona Lisa" or Vincent Van Gogh 's "Starry Night". Art can also include drawings, pictures, songs, poems, architecture, literature, or just about anything else that someone can use to express themselves. What makes most art effective or meaningful is its purpose, how it inspires an emotion, and how aesthetically pleasing it is. In other words, art is effective if it has some sort of impact on others. But soon Yael, being the 2–year–old she was, started making noise. Kaiser, knowing that if they heard Yael they would surely find and kill all of them, firmly covered Yael's mouth to quiet her. Later after being saved by police officers, Kaiser found out that in her attempt to save the others in the crawlspace, she ended up smothering her own child; hence the title of the song "Hush Yael" was inspired. The fact the song is based around such a tragic story makes it effective in evoking feelings of dread, sympathy, remorse, disbelief, and even a little bit of anger. The perpetrators were after all, eventually freed from prison in 2008 (Solomon). In this way, this specific piece of art promotes an emotional effect from those who understand the backstory. Though the majority of the song retells a real story, the story isn't the main, central message. In the chorus, it says "So lift your voices high, higher than the mountains of their spite. We are, we are the fearless, the ruthless, the heroes of our time." What this means is that since we have the ability to speak out, we should speak out for those who are not able to and be the 'heroes of our time'. Even though fixing these numbers is common knowledge and something most can agree upon, there is a lack of solutions or effort. Granted, the shelters have been showing improvement, and there are states taking larger steps to work towards ending homelessness. But the pace is inadequate. They then claim that the numbers are annual, instead of point–in–time, meaning that "the actual count is adjusted upward to reflect the fact that some people who were homeless...were not homeless on the night of the count" (Corinth, Kevin). They also stopped counting those who spent a large amount of time in shelters as homeless, dropping their percentages. In reality, Utah is not the powerhouse it claimed to be. Corinth suggested that instead of Utah cooking up a great percentage, "additional focus should be placed on transitioning people out of expensive supportive housing and into housing of their own or with family members when their well–being improves." REM sleep occurs in cycles of about 90–120 minutes throughout the sleepers' night, and it accounts for up to 20–25% of total sleep time in adult humans (Mastin). Most dreaming occurs during this stage. REM sleep is characterized by eye movement, increasing respiration rate and also increasing the sleepers brain activity. REM sleep is also referred to as paradoxical sleep because, while the brain, other body systems, and parts become more active, the person's muscles become more relaxed, or almost in a paralyzed state. Dreaming occurs because of all the increased brain activity happening in the sleepers brain, but voluntary muscles become paralyzed. Voluntary muscles are those that are needed to move by choice (Mastin). Romantic poetry celebrated the imagination over rationality, passion, and dreams over reason and external reality, and isolated individuality over collective humankind. He wonders why she is dreaming in this place, and of what. The speaker says that she must be from a far away land, because even the trees are left to wonder about her. He comments on the peculiarity of how white her skin is, how strangely she is dressed, as well as the length of her hair is off setting to him. He is addressing her as if she will respond to him, which is another use of apostrophe. He is seemingly disoriented by her lack of courteousness; she will not answer his questions. The introduction to Irene being placed in the second stanza is important because it allows for a mood to be created, for the poem to establish an emotional investment for the speaker; we must first get a vivid image of the external surroundings. Poe constructs a mystical setting for his poem which conveys the music in the speaker's soul. He does this by using alliteration in the first stanza, "And, Softly, dripping, drop by drop. A stubborn seven–year–old looking to be like the "big kids" might argue that they are too old for bedtime stories; that they have out grown them what they see as being meant for the younger children. Not everyone, however, is a stubborn seven–year–old. Just because they are older does not mean that someone cannot enjoy something that they were fond of in their childhood; it simply means that they will likely enjoy it in a different way. The same is true with fairy tales; a person's understanding of a tale evolves as they get older. As a person has had more experiences and learned to think more critically, they are likely to have different ideas on tales than they would have when first hearing them at a young age. They do not grow too old or become too sophisticated for fairy tales, they simply become able to have more sophisticated and complex interpretations of them. If people thought themselves to be too sophisticated for fairy tales it would follow that fairy tales would be abandoned for children altogether. Instead, fairy tales and folklore are still studied as pieces of literature and continuously adapted to fit the current times.
