3. MISSOURI COMPROMISE
▶ Missouri (slave state) and Maine (free state)
became states at the same time to keep the
number of free states and slave states equal in
number.
▶ A line was drawn across the Louisiana territory
with the understanding that new states north
of the line would be free states while new
states south of the line would be slave states.
4. WILMOT PROVISO
▶ This was a bill proposed by David Wilmot to
ban slavery in newly gained territory from the
Mexican-American War. This bill failed.
5. FUGITIVE SLAVE LAW
▶ A law that required all citizens to help catch
runaway slaves. People who didn’t follow this
law could be fined and jailed.
6. CREATION OF
THE FREE SOIL PARTY
▶ A political party that was formed with the goal
of keeping slavery out of the western
territories.
7. COMPROMISE OF 1850
▶ A series of bills passed by Congress about
slavery with the goal of preventing war from
breaking out between the states.
8. CREATION OF
THE REPUBLICAN PARTY
▶ A new political party that was formed with the
goal of keeping slavery out of the western
territories. Later, their goal would evolve to
completely abolishing slavery.
9. KANSAS-NEBRASKA ACT
▶ Undid the Missouri Compromise by allowing
the new territories of Kansas and Nebraska to
decide for themselves whether they would be
free states or slave states (Popular
Sovereignty).
10. BLEEDING KANSAS
▶ A series of violent clashes between pro-slavery
and anti-slavery people in Kansas as a result of
the Kansas-Nebraska Act.
11. DRED SCOTT CASE
▶ A Supreme Court decision that stated slaves
were not citizens and therefore had no rights.
▶ It also said Congress could not outlaw slavery
in any territory.
12. UNCLE TOM’S CABIN
▶ A book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe
about the evils of slavery.
▶ It was widely read and inspired many people
in the North to fight against slavery.
13. LINCOLN-DOUGLAS
DEBATES
▶ A series of debates between Abraham Lincoln
and Stephen Douglas, who were running for
the U.S. Senate. The main topic of their
debates was slavery.
▶ These debates made Lincoln famous and
propelled him to the presidency two years
later.
14. JOHN BROWN’S RAID
▶ John Brown and his followers raided a Federal
Arsenal with the goal of starting a massive
slave revolt.
▶ The raid failed and John Brown was hanged
for treason. He was viewed as a hero by the
North and a traitor by the South.
15. LINCOLN ELECTED
PRESIDENT
▶ Abraham Lincoln won the presidency
because the Democratic Party split and
fielded two candidates. Lincoln only won the
northern states and was not even on the ballot
in most of the southern states.
16. SECESSION OF STATES
▶ The southern states separated from the United
States and formed their own country known as
the Confederate States of America.
▶ This was a direct result of Lincoln winning the
presidency.
17. FORT SUMTER
▶ The first shots fired of the Civil War. The
Confederates seized this fort from the Union in
Charleston, South Carolina.
