4. What does the audience Know?
 Of the 1 million sows in the PIC data base only 50 % reported that they use
the PCAI technique to inseminate sows only.
 Regionally Birchwood genetics reports that 30 % of their customers use
the PCAI technique to inseminate sows.

5. With TAI up to 30 % of the dose can be
displaced before reaching the uterus

6. With PCAI the entire dose reaches the
site of fertilization

7. What can I tell them?
 September of 2015 we began using the PCAI technique.
 Before we implemented PCAI we restructured the flow of our barns, to allow for
parity segregation.
 Maiden gilts, bred gilts are housed in a separate location than multi parous
sows.
 P1’s are grouped together in the snake to enhance parity segregation.

 Labor efficiencies
 Overall time spent breeding sows did not change!
 Labor allocation “flexibility” was our greatest advantage.
 Technicians with a specific focus!
 Gilts are treated as gilts~
 Sows are treated as sows ~

9. Goals and Objectives
 Maintain our current production
 90% farrowing rate
 14 TB
 Focus on improving the performance of our gilts & P1’s
 “Phsychology” of the technician.
 Ability to feed gilts side by side.

10. The Team
 Breeding/Gestation Barn. (capacity 3100)
 3 technicians provide daily care of the multi parous sows.
 Chores
 Insemination
 Vaccination, feed back
 Adjusting feed levels
 GDU (capacity 1600)/Gilt Barn (capacity 600)
 2 technicians provide daily care of gilts only!
Including boar exposure to maiden gilts in the GDU.

11. Game Plan
 Following chores 1 technician begins to heat check.
 Approxamitely 90 minutes later the insemination process begins.
 Following the service we “re expose” the sow to the boar.
 Any sows that display estrous that were not caught in the A.M will be
inseminated that afternoon.

13. Important to note;
 PCAI may not improve already great performance.
 PCAI is not a substitute for good management.
