1. Evaluation Question 7
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do
you feel you have learnt from that to your full
product?
2. Photography
My photography skills and knowledge have developed further since the preliminary task. The images I
used for my preliminary task were not very effective as they did not attract the audience and the mise-
en-scene was not appealing, which resulted in an ineffective and unappealing dominant image. For the
construction of the main project I garnered a more concrete idea of the type of photography
conventions and facial expressions employed by products of my genre to appeal to their audience. I also
developed more knowledge regarding model conventions and mise-en-scene, which lead me to instruct
my model to dress and act in a certain style so they may embody the ‘Hero’ archetype ( in accordance
with Propp’s theory) and make my audience identify with her and thus be more interested in her and the
product.
3. Layout
Since my preliminary task, I have developed my skills and understanding regarding the construction of
the contents page. The contents page for my preliminary task was of a low quality, did not appeal to the
audience and was not laid out appropriately. For my final product, I researched and experimented with
different layouts, colours and Photoshop tools to produce a page that was appealing and attractive. For
example, through research into competition, I gained inspiration regarding layout and fonts from
Kerrang! Magazine. By replicating a professional product’s design I aimed to achieve the same effects
and thus make my product more appealing.
4. Modes of Address
I did not perform any research regarding effective modes of address for my preliminary task, which
resulted in the front cover being unappealing. However, during the initial planning of my main project I
researched in depth into professional products of my genre and the type of codes they embed into their
products to attract customers. Thus, when it came to constructing the product I was more confident
with embedding mystery codes into my sub-headings and sell-lines to increase interest.
5. Font
Although for my preliminary task I had a rough idea of the font styles to use, not enough adequate
research and planning had been performed which resulted in sell-lines which were difficult to read and
therefore not appealing. Learning from this mistake, for my main project I researched font styles
employed by magazines and similar products (such as clothing websites and band logos) of the genre so I
was more confident with the house style I was aiming for in order to appeal and attract my target
audience.
