1. What areas worked well?
I feel that the ideas were there. Idea generation was a lot more effective than it has been in
precious units. I executed some of the ideas well, obviously the finished product wasn’t the
same as the idea, and I transformed the image of Irn-Bru quite effectively. I did think about
stay with the current image they have, the inappropriate funny one, but I later discovered it
wasn’t my style and I found it hard to think of slogans that would match the theme.
So I decided to stay on the sporty side and this worked well for me. The boxing advert wasn’t
exactly like I imagined but I am still very pleased with it. The punching bag was meant to be
the can but it was hard to edit the can to the shape of the broken bag.
I think the moving banners worked well too. They are much more effective than still ones.
You get the information separately instead of all at once which makes it less confusing for
the consumer.
What areas could have done with more work?
The back of the can didn’t match the front, the liquid was it two different styles, one looked
more cartoony.
I would have liked to have more poster adverts so I had more to choose from. The better
advert was the boxing one, but the can and banner focus more on the refreshing side of the
drink to the energy and sport side, so it is a mishmash of angles to sell the product on.
What effect did you think your development stages had on the final product?
I think my development stages helped me to see what was wrong with the final products
before it was too late. It also let me see how different my ideas were and which aspects
worked well. Once I knew that then I could use that aspect in more of my designs. If I didn’t
like the first draft at all then I knew I had to start again or start a new design, which affected
the final outcome because I never would have reached it without the first drafts.
Assess the technical and aesthetic qualities of your final pieces
I have used a lot of clipping masks this unit, which is something I used to be only a little
familiar with. Colour overlaying and using strokes were also a big part of these final
products.
A new thing I learnt during this unit was how to make gifs. I had never made a gif before it
was quite easy to pick up, however it did include over 200 layers. The wave gif took up a day
and a half of production. It didn’t look as I hoped it would but as my first try I thought it turned
out good.
Overall the final products don’t really match, the advert is different from the can and banner
which ruins the finished brand.
Explain whether you feel your final pieces are fit for purpose.
The purpose is to re-launch Irn-Bru 32. My final pieces are certainly different from the
original branding but I believe they might be a little too different.
2. The pieces I produced are very professional which this isn’t an image Irn-Bru gave off on
their other advertising campaigns. I think my products are professional but not right for IrnBru.
