Old Yeller is a coming of age novel set in 1860s Texas that details the relationship between the
Coates family, especially the 14–year–old son, Travis, and a stray dog named Old Yeller. The dog is

As a young girl in Oklahoma, there was always a high school or community theatre somewhere that
was getting ready to perform the musical Lil Abner. I can close my eyes and see posters at the
library, or flyers being sent home in my third grade Wednesday folder, I can even recall my
babysitter talking about the lead she got in the show. All of those recollections seem so unique to my
time in Oklahoma because once my family relocated to Houston, Lil Abner became more of an odd
memory. For whatever reason that musical didn't share the same popularity as it did in Texas. As
time went on the title slipped further into the depths of my mind. Truth is, until a couple months ago,
I couldn't tell you what the musical Lil Abner was even about. So, when the assignment to write
about a musical made before 1958, that we haven't covered in class came along I asked myself to
think about shows that I know of but don't actually know...and suddenly all those early memories of
posters and high school productions in Oklahoma City of Lil Abner came flooding back to the
forefront of my mind. What I did not realize was how relevant my choice would be to the times we
live in now.

In On Intelligence, Jeff Hawkins hypothesizes a system of human intelligence based on memory,
predictions, and pattern matching in what he calls a "memory–prediction framework." Because he
studied and worked in computer science, rather than neuroscience, Hawkins has a unique
perspective and writes in terms that are accessible to someone from a non–neurological background
or standpoint and often analogous to computer architecture, making the subject matter relatable to
the interested layman. However, though he offers a plausible structure of the brain that mostly aligns
with current thinking, he does not take into account important recent research, omitting
neurologically developments that have been accepted by the scientific community. The main

The relationship between Jules and Cynthia Hawkins in Jean–Jacques Beneix's Diva is uniquely
complex and vaguely oedipal. For Jules, the diva represents musical perfection, and he is completely
in love with her. However, her relationship to him is somewhat maternal. Jules's obsession with
Cynthia Hawkins is rather unhealthy, and he violates her purity. However, her maternal attitude
towards him allows for reconciliation despite his mistakes.
From the very beginning of the movie, the voice of Cynthia Hawkins pervades everything. In fact,
the opening title sequence tricks the viewer into thinking her voice is non–diegetic sound, mere
background music for the on–screen occurrences. However, when Jules turns off his tape deck, the
Alba can instantly detect his infatuation with the diva from the way he longingly stares at the lifelike
portrait of Cynthia, with her stolen dress draped over it almost as if the painting is wearing the
gown. Jules brings the diva's dress to a black prostitute, and has her wear the gown, trying to delude
himself into the illusion that he is with Cynthia Hawkins. Jules displays many of the characteristics
of a young lover. He brings flowers to Cynthia, and is content to hear the sound of her voice or be
connected to her in any way. When Jules and Cynthia meet for their walk, he holds her umbrella
over her head while they meander through the park. Also typical of an adolescent lover afraid to
make a first move, Jules moves closer and closer to her, slowly and hesitantly putting his hand on
her shoulder, draping his arm around her.
Despite his obvious romantic desires for Cynthia Hawkins, there are also some aspects of a maternal
relationship. Jules cuddles her gown while listening to her sing, seeking motherly comfort in the
