The Coming of Spain
Enrique B. Picardal Jr
Biliran Province State University
 A Colony is a country that is
ruled by foreigners from another
land.
 The coming of Spaniards
changed our history.
 Through Spain we became
Catholic in region.
 We also got a new and more advanced culture
from Europe and Mexico.
 But for the first time in our history, we lost our freedom
and independence to foreigners.
 It took 300 years before we could have our freedom
back again.
Why the Spaniards Came.
 The Spaniard come to the Philippines and Asia because of these reasons:
 God is the first aim of Spain was to spread the Roman catholic religion.
 At the time, Spain was the greatest champion of Catholicism in the world.
 The Spanish king spent vast sums of money to convert more people to
Catholicism.
2.Gold
 The second aim of Spain was to get rich.
 It wanted to control
the spice trade in Asia because spice (pepper, ginger,
garlic, etc.) were very much demand in Europe.
If Spain could control the spice trade, it would be richest
nation in the world.
But it did not succeed in this aim.
3. Glory
 The third aim of Spain was get political glory.
 When the Spain conquered the Philippine in Asia.
 It became the greatest empire in the world during the 16th
century Philip II
Was the first king to boast that the sun never set on his
kingdom.
Because it was sunset in manila it was also sunrise in Madrid,
Spain.
Magellan's Voyage
 The coming of Magellan to the Philippines was not an accident.
 He was really planned and wanted to find the Philippines because he heard that it was
a very rich land.
 So Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer, asked project the Portuguese king,
 King Manuel, to finance a project to sail to the Philippines, at Magellan and told him to
go away.
 Magellan traveled to the next country, Spain, and talked the king and queen of Spain
into supporting his expedition to Asia.
 King Ferdinand and Queen Isabel of Spain, who ruled jointly, became interested because
Magellan said he could find a new route to the East by sailing through a secret passage in the
west. At that time, the rich lands of Asia were closed to Spain.
 King Ferdinand and Queen Isabel ordered and expedition to accompany the brave Magellan on
his historic voyage.
 He Fleet consisted of five ships and 265 men..
 On September 20, 1517, the expedition of Magellan left Spain for the east.
 They sailed westward across the Atlantic Ocean down to the tip of South America.
 Here they crossed the secret passage that was known only to Magellan.
 This secret passage is now called the strait of Magellan.
“Discovery of the Philippines
 Westerners trumpeted Magellan’s Landing in the Philippines as its
“discovery” by Spain.
 Of course, this was not true because our Country was known to Asians
long before the white European came .
 We were never really lost, so how could we be Discovered”?
 Why did Spain Advertise its landing in the Philippines as a “discovery”
 It had to do this in order to keep away the other rival European
powers from grabbing its new Colony.
 It was like a race for new Lands.
 Whoever got to the place first could plant their nation’s flag and claim
that land for their king.
The Big Power’s
 Spain
 Portugal
 England
 France and the
 Netherland
 Competed with each other to be the first to
“Discover” or find countries not yet known to the
others.
 At the time, The big powers in Europe were building
their Empire in Asia, Africa, and South America.
 They wanted more power and riches by grabbing as many
colonies as possible in the other Continents.
 This political race to grab new lands around the world was called
“ Colonialism”
 Colonialism was popular in the 16th to 19th centuries among the
Europe powers.
 It’s began when big power invaded smaller Country.
 The smaller country then became the colony of the big power.
 The big power used the natural resources of the colony.
 The people of that colony were no longer free.
 They feel under control of the big power.
Colonialism and Imperialism
 Colonialism is also called “Imperialism “
 Spain
 Portugal
 England
 France and
 Netherland
 They became great empire because of their many
colonies then. They become bitter rivals for these
colonies.
