Medical vs Military death tolls in the Civil War
Killing. A horrible thing, indeed. But, widely misinterpreted. To most people, the first thing to come
to mind would be a person making someone else die. This isn't necessarily true. Killing is just
causing death. For example, Ebola isn't a person, yet it made people die. So did Dysentery, a disease
in the Civil War that was nicknamed 'Minister of death'. I'm sure you can guess why. So, what did
kill more people in the Civil War? The numbers show that out of all the deaths, more happened off
the battlefield than on it, specifically the diseases and medical practices.
The Union enlisted 2,893,304 soldiers.

Bell Tolls Bullfighting
For Whom the Bell Tolls, by Ernest Hemingway, was published in 1940. It is a novel set in the
Spanish Civil War, which ravaged the country in the late 1930's. Tensions in Spain began to rise as
early as 1931,when a group of left–wing Republicans overthrew the country's monarchy in a
bloodless coup. The new Republican government then proposed controversial religious reforms that
angered right–wing Fascists, who had the support of the army and the Catholic Church. Hemingway
traveled extensively in Spain, and grew very interested in Spanish culture. Specifically, he writes
about bullfighting, not only in this novel, but also in his other works as well. While Hemingway's
novels carry a common theme, For Whom the Bell Tolls is no different. In ... Show more content on

Robert Jordan, as he nears his death knows that his time has come, and there is no escaping his
death. Another character, Anselmo feels the same way about his nearly unavoidable death, "And
since we must win to survive ultimately, it is necessary that the bridges must be blown" (99).
Anselmo explains to Robert Jordan that the only way that they may survive the war is to win. In
order to win, they must carry out their dangerous assignment to blow up a bridge; otherwise their
foreseeable death will arrive. All characters in For Whom the Bell Tolls are ready to make the
ultimate sacrifice in the face of war and death. To sacrifice one's life for their beliefs is something
that takes bravery and pride. To go through the hardships of war is to suffer for others. Anselmo
explains, "I suffer for others, as all good men should" (300). Anselmo believes that all men that are
good and loyal to their side of the war should suffer for those who cannot fight. Not only would he
sacrifice for others that share his beliefs, he would sacrifice his life for his guerrilla band members,
which demonstrates the idea of close companionship in the face of death. Death is inevitable in
every person's life, but death in these character's lives is easily predicted to be early, and this
represents the sadness and sorrows in the innocence of war. There are many ways to die, and war is
the saddest way for that to occur, but at the same time,

The Death Toll Of Haiti
It was typical late afternoon in Haiti capital of Port–au–Prince. People were strolling the streets, and
local vendors were selling various goods at the Port–au–Prince historic Iron Market. Then at 4:53
pm on January 12, 2010 a 7.0 magnitude hit Haiti. Haiti had not seen a major earthquake like this in
almost 200 years. People scrambled through the streets as the ground roared knocking down huge
stone and brick building onto the streets of Port–au–Prince. An eyewitness describes the moment
that the earthquake hit, "The earth screamed; a sound of thunder that came from its belly as it
violently shook the plants, the car, the walls, the pavement that I stood on. I called out to everyone
to walk out of the house quickly. It seemed like a long, long time. Then silence. Then screams from
some of the residents of the rural neighborhood" (Clesca, 2010). This would be one of the deadliest
earthquake of our generation. The estimated death toll was 316,000 deaths, and over 3 million
people were displaced by the earthquake. Many people died when their dwelling collapsed and they
were trapped under the rumble. People also died from falling objects, such as large building
materials. This earthquake will ultimately change the structured of Haiti and leave many residents
asking, who is responsible for the huge loss of life? As I have mention above, Haiti has not been hit
by a major earthquake since the 18th century. Geologists first believed that Caribbean tectonic plates
were responsible

For Whom The Bell Tolls Innocence
Many scholars can conclude that the path of war is the path of destruction. People lose their lives,
their homes, and their innocence to war. War may bring overall victory to one country, but to both, it
brings loss on many levels. The underlying theme of For Whom The Bell Tolls was a loss of
innocence and having to give up one's personal beliefs to war. Three characters who faced the
horrors of war were Maria, Joaquín, and Lieutenant Berrendo. In For Whom The Bell Tolls, Maria
was a beautiful girl who suffered tremendously during the war until she was finally rescued by Pilar.
Maria lost her innocence to the war when she witnessed her parents death and when she was raped
numerous times by soldiers. "...they shot her with my father...I saw both of them shot..."
(Hemingway, 350). Maria then goes on to explain that after being humiliated by the soldiers, she is
taken to her father's office where she is raped. "...into the office of my father where they laid me
onto the couch. And it was there that the bad things were done" (Hemingway, 353). Everything
Maria had faced from the war affected her deeply. At one point Maria explains her emotions by
saying, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lieutenant Berrendo is mandated to have his men decapitate the guerillas after a battle. Berrendo
gives the order, and walks away from the field because, "He did not wish to stay to see his orders
being carried out" (Hemingway, 322). War was definitely something Lieutenant Berrendo did not
like because he often "...felt only the hollowness that comes from action" (Hemingway, 326).
Berrendo believed that some of the actions that they had to take were not necessary. Even though he
knew that the heads of their enemies were necessary for proof and identification, Berrendo believed
the whole concept was barbarous. It was because of war that Lieutenant Berrendo was forced to put
his morals aside and do things he believed were not morally

For Whom The Bell Tolls Summary
December 7, 1941. The sun was just coming up to awaken the sleeping sailors and to greet the early
birds of the brave me on the dock and ships in the Pearl Harbor of Oahu. This is how the American
people view this table turning day for the war.
In the 21st Century, the United States of America think of Japan as an ally, our partner. Japan and
the United States were always friendly competitors ( ). But those who have been in that Harbor and
those who survived will never forget what happened that day. When WWII started the Japanese
were known as "Japs" ( ). The Japanese (at the time) believed themselves to be a divine race to rule
Asia ( ). That also kind of triggered a feeling of a high and mighty response within the country of
Japan. They ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But that changed as quickly as the bombs were falling down on the innocent and brave sailors.
Nobody will understand except those who witnessed or heard on the radio or TV in their living
room. That day the United States had taken a major hit and the strong American soul had been tested
roughly ( ). That day something broke in the innocent land of the United States of America ( ). "It
forged a super power. Isolationist and interventionist impulses that had always divided America
converged into a White–hot fury that could not be taken away or even close to burning out anytime
soon ( ). The American people were burning with rage and were hungry for war. The European
Nations were waiting for the chance to get America into the war, to get a 50/50 chance of winning
the war. Once Pearl Harbor had taken place, Winston Churchill prime minister of England traveled
to meet with President Roosevelt to convince him to join the war. When he agreed to it and signed
the Declaration of War to Japan, the American people were going to get the Revenge that they
wanted to get and to end the war that got them involved in the first

The Events Factors Caused By Driving And Low Standard...
As the preceding Tables 5–8 depicted, five scenario factors were investigated. First, drivers at Path 1
have higher speed and low standard deviation of speed, standard deviation of lane deviation, and
acceleration noise than other paths. Vehicles from the on–ramp before toll plaza (i.e., Paths 4 and 5),
as shown in Figure 3 (a), have lower speed and higher dangerous behavior (i.e., standard deviation
of speed, acceleration noise, and standard deviation of lane deviation) compared to Path 1 at all
zones. It can be explained that vehicles from the on–ramp perform sudden lane changing maneuvers
before and after the toll plaza. Additionally, vehicles from Path 3 which is driving through the
express lanes to the off–ramp after the toll plaza have also lower speed and riskier behavior. This is
because drivers are reducing vehicle's speed to change lanes after the toll plaza. Furthermore,
vehicles from Path 2 which is driving from mainline to cash toll payment and back to mainline have
lower speed at and after the toll plaza, and riskier indicators at all zones due to speed variation and
sudden lane changing before and after the toll plaza. Second, for signage, drivers who navigate in
scenarios with Case 2 signage, which is adding the DMS sign at the on–ramp, removing the third
overhead sign, and relocate the second overhead sign as shown in Figure 3 (b), exhibited lower
speed variation after the on–ramp than drivers who perform scenarios of the base condition with the

The Death Toll Of The Genocide
The crime of committing, destroying, or trying to destroy the existence of a group of people because
of their racial (whose identity is defined by physical), national (whose identity is defined by a
common country of nationality or national origin), ethnic (whose identity is defined by physical
characteristics), or religious group (whose identity is defined by common religious creeds, beliefs,
practices, or rituals), is known as genocide, and this term did not exist before 1944. Usually the
death toll of the genocide is in thousands and in some cases in millions. According to the Canadian
scholars, Frank Chalk and Kurt Jonassohn, they have identified four main types of genocide: first,
Ideological: this type of genocide is committed in an effort to achieve an ideal social structure in
which all members of society are alike or hold the same belief. For example the Armenian genocide
in 1915, when the leaders of the Turkish government killed over 1.5 millions of Turkey's Armenians
living in the Ottoman Empire. Also, Cambodian, and Jews/Roma in Germany. Second type,
Retributive: this genocide mostly to occur when one group dominates another group and fears its
rebellion or when the other group actually rebels. For example the genocide in Rwanda in 1994,
when members of the Hutu ethnic majority in Rwanda murdered as many as 800,000 people, mostly
of the Tutsi minority. The third type is Developmental: usually the government use this type of
genocide against the native people to

Analysis Of For Whom The Bell Tolls
For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway is a historical fiction love story, set in Spain during
the Spanish Civil war, which heavily develops thematically from a line about human nature from
John Donne's Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions of "No man is an Iland; every man is a piece of
the continent, a part of the main," (Preface). Within the novel, anti–fascist American man, Robert
Jordan, transforms from a distrustful man into an altruist for his loved ones, who discovers the idea
Donne put onto paper and Hemingway transcribed, creating a true, convincing, and logical
conclusion (4, 247); however, this change almost solely comes from the plot device of romantic
love, which is only able to be understood as logical with a suspension of disbelief (210). In order to
judge the plot of the journey of the protagonist and the ending of the novel, his development as a
character should first be analyzed. Initially, when coming to the revolution, Robert Jordan views the
world as a black and white battle of ideas and his only fear was not to complete his "duty" to his
cause in life and war, rather than the people the fighting truly stands for (51), which also extends to
his lack of initial trust in his comrade, Anselmo (4). Jordan as an independent loner represents a man
believing he is "an Iland," in how he chooses to separate himself from others and believes his
ideology is flawless, rather than trying to improve as a human. Jordan eventually falls out of his
linear views,

Pros And Cons Of Tollway Vs. Freeway
In the third debate in class, we talked about Tollway vs. freeway. A tollway is an open or private
road for which a free or toll is evaluated for passage. It is a shape of road pricing typically executed
to help recover the cost of road maintenance and construction. Tollway requires vehicles to stop or
back off; manual toll gathering sits wastes time and raises vehicle working expenses. The activity
redirection coming about because of the tolls expands congestion on the road system and makes it
less useful. A freeway is a controlled–get to a multi–path expressway that does not have tolls. Traffic
flow on a highway is unhindered in light of the fact that there are no moving signals, convergences,
or at–level crossings with different railroads, streets, or passerby ways. Ways out and entrances to
the highway are given at interchanges by slippy streets, which consider speed changes between the
interstate and collector streets. Opposing directions of travel are for the most part isolated by a focal
reservation containing a traffic obstruction, grass, or a median strip. This eliminates the contentions
with other directions and enhances safety and limit. The first group talked about Public tollways and
why they are absolutely necessary. Toll roads can be built at no cost to taxpayers. The first idea of
toll streets was to raise reserves for roadway upkeep by putting the weight of users, as opposed to
neighborhood citizens. Today open organizations offer long–term concession

Child Abuse's Deathly Toll

Child abuse's deathly toll Child abuse, a very sensitive yet susceptible issue. Many people do not
want to face the consequences that child abuse can impose in children's futures. The way a child is
raised plays a very important role in how the child is going to grow up to be. More than likely if a
child is raised in a stable, well brought up home, the child is going to grow up to be an average
individual. On the other hand, if a child is raised in a home where they are physically and mentally
abused, they have a greater chance of developing mental issues, and leading a wrongful life. Child
abuse plays the most influential role when it comes down to criminal behaviour. Most identified ...

Some believe that genes and other mental disorders are the biggest cause of a life of crime. In 1993
the Netherlands conducted a study where a family of Dutch men with an aggressive history were
reportedly missing the same gene. (BBC News, Are Murderers born or made?) Although missing
this gene may cause violent outbreaks, the factor that triggers it abundantly, is the occurences in
your childhood. As Jim Fallon says in his TED talk video, to fully express this gene you have to at a
very early age or before puberty, be exposed to a very traumatic 3D event. Even though mental
illness also plays a role in these notorious crimes, when a person tried to use the insanity plea, the
justice system often goes back to see if their childhood persisted of any abuse or neglect. Although
many factors play a role in the influence of these notorious crimes, child abuse is clearly the most
influential. Child adolescence is a time period in our life that is the most crucial to us as humans.
Most people who engage in criminal behaviour lack the love and nourishment of parental figures at
a young age, which they then try to sadistically recuperate by committing these horrendous

Langthwaite Short Walk
Beginning from the cosy village of Langthwaite, this short walk has outstanding views. Fine heather
moorland and sparkling streams help to compensate for the ravages of the lead mines and spoil
heaps.
Langthwaite is acknowledged as the capital of Arkengarthdale and lies on the road from Reeth to
Tan Hill. The road was constructed in c.1741 and it was one of the first turnpikes. Its original
purpose was to transport coal from the Tan Hill mines to be used in the smelting furnaces around
Langthwaite. Turnpike roads extracted tolls from travellers in order to pay for their building and
maintenance. They often took advantage of earlier routes, especially through valleys, which were
formerly toll free. Turnpikes were resented by the packhorse and ... Show more content on

Bell pits were one of the earliest methods of mining for lead and other minerals. A vertical shaft was
sunk to a depth of about 20 feet (6m) before digging horizontally, along the vein. The ore and waste
were removed by a hand winch and a bucket. Due to poor ventilation, these workings could not
progress very far before the air became foul. There was also the danger of the tunnel collapsing. To
prevent this happening another bell pit was sunk close by. This procedure was repeated many times,
resulting in a line of bell pits spaced out along the length of the vein.
During our descent to Booze the scenery of Calver Hill, Fremington Edge and lower Arkengarthdale

unfortunately it does not have any licenced premises as its name implies. As a matter of fact, most of
its early residents were Methodists and so they abstained from the demon drink. In 1473 the hamlet

Book Of Tolls Essay
The Book of Kells is one of the most beautiful and mysterious surviving medieval manuscripts, and
it is prominent for its extreme decoration. It comprises of four Gospels in Latin created on vellum in

The art of the Book of Kells is a complicated synthesis of Christian iconography, derived from the
Mediterranean world, and the northern European predilection for brilliant colour and abstract
pattern. In the religious scenes, abstract values dominate at the expense of naturalism, imbuing the
images with a detached, visionary quality. The bulk of the painting, however, appears to be as much
decorative as religious in content. The book has a broad palette of colors with purple, lilac, red,
pink, green, as well as, yellow being the colors greatest frequently used in the writing. The lavish
illumination of the program of the book is far better than any other enduring insular gospel book.
There are ten persisting full page illuminations including two evangelist pictures, three pages with
the four evangelist symbols, a carpet page, a minuscule of the Virgin Child, a minuscule of Christ
enthroned, a minuscule of the Arrest of Jesus, and the Temptation of Christ. There are thirteen
existing full pages of decorated text including pages for the first few words of each of the Gospels. 9

Technology Changed Technology
No wave of change has ever been greater than the change that technology has had on our lives.
Whether it's how we communicate and access information to how we make payments, technology
has changed it. It is clear that the way we communicate has changed abundantly over the past
century. Many years ago the only form of communication was the hand written letter, with it taking
weeks to months to get a reply. Now with modern technology we can instantly send an email and
can receive a reply in the same day. The fact that communication has become faster can allow
organising an event, such as a birthday, easier. Mobile phones have also allowed us to make calls to
anyone, anywhere, anytime. If I'm at the shops and can't remember if I was supposed to get milk, a
quick call home allows me to check. Many people live in different countries to their families and the
advancement in technology allows them to video call a person and see them on the other end, which
helps them to feel closer than they are. The mobile phone's main feature may be for communication
but they can now do so much more than just make a call. You can now access the internet, send
emails, use the calender and write notes to yourself, keeping the things you need to do in the palm of
your hand. The phone also allows you to load loyalty cards onto it, eliminating the need to carry
them. When you're travelling overseas you can get your itinerary on your phone and you could

The Problem Of Car Accidents
Introduction and background Since the creation of automobiles in 1769, the number of cars on the
roads has drastically increased and with it the number of car accident. In the United Stated there
have been a total of 32,719 car accident; in the year 2013 that either did or did not involve
pedestrians or cyclist. The overcrowding of streets and large number of car accidents can be
attributed to the large influx of cars. While the number of accident in Texas is high standing at 3,382
as of 2013; a large amount; 10% of those accident took place in Harris County, in comparison to
other counties in Texas that have less than .1%. Car accidents have many causes such as running red
lights, drinking and driving, speeding, use of mobiles, lack of sleep and vigilance while preforming
the task of driving. These actions caused numerus deaths of the drivers, passengers, and pedestrians.
Which is also why the leading cause of death in children is car accidents. Problem The problem at

Themes In For Whom The Bells Tolls
We all are put to the test by having to make sacrifices like a life or death situation. Although the
majority of those choices may be for the greater good, some can hurt others. We are put to the task,
and we have several obstacles in our way, and it is our duty to accomplish that task. In Ernest
Hemingway's For Whom the Bells Tolls, the character of Robert Jordan risks his life to fight fascism
to do his duty, take care of Maria and to wash away his father suicide.
To begin with, Robert Jordan takes care of the woman he loves, Maria. Ever since Robert Jordan
went with the reclusive group in the mountain, the two of them had empathy of love towards each
other. Robert Jordan tries to reject the adulation they have for each other because he thinks that after
the bridge is blown, they will not see each other anymore. Maria refuses to think that and shows all
her love towards him. Soon Robert Jordan seems to care more about Maria and uses their passion
for each other as a distraction from the war. Hewson states that "Jordan comes to realize that he and
Maria are 'making an alliance against death' through their love for each other (6). Their love for each
other designates them forget about everything, and all they want to do is be together. The "alliance
against death" that they have is significant in the story. Being together assembles them to feel
powerful and gives them both hope and strength during their hard times there. This helps out both of
these characters in their own

use and prevent the negative health factors associated with it. Still today approximately 5 million
deaths are caused by cancer, with the highest occurrence of death in China. China has a large
majority of the world's smokers, and there may be several underlying reasons why. The article,
"China and the Toll of Smoking," written by The Editorial Board of the New York Times embodies
several concepts of cultural anthropology. The economic power tobacco companies have over the

China has the largest population of smokers and this may be because the citizens of China are
unaware of the negative effects cigarette use has on one's health. Despite external intervention by
the World Health Organization, China has neglected to place warning labels on cigarette packages. I
believe this is because of the power the Chinese tobacco companies have over the government.
Globalization and the cigarette trade with Japan Tobacco may have also contributed to the
misinformed Chinese populous. It has been stated that money is the root of all evil, and in this case,
the economic benefits are outweighing the health of Chinese citizens. "...1 billion tobacco–related
deaths are predicted to occur during the 21st century" (He et. all 2010). These lives lost due to

Essay on Sustainability at EastLink Engineering Project
Sustainability, which is the definition of "the process of using, conserving and enhancing a
community's resources", plays a significant part in large engineering projects such as EastLink.
EastLink's long–term goal is to provide a fast, lasting alternative for drivers to commute between
eastern suburbs. For a project that had a final total cost of $2.5B, sustainability, that is ensuring that
its relevance and usefulness to the society today and for the foreseeable future is a pivotal part of
EastLink. Permanent projects that demand large commitment and resources are the ones that need to
heed the concept of sustainability the most, as often there is no going back once construction of such
a project has begun. Just like it is with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Two significant decisions that have affected the EastLink project are firstly, the decision to develop
EastLink as a tollway and secondly, an environmental issue involving potential damage that would
be caused to the nearby Mullum Mullum Valley.
EastLink was a multibillion–dollar project, and its funding stemmed primarily from the Federal
government, however as the project progressed, the Victorian Government switched to the stance
that the EastLink project was no longer viable as a toll free road which subsequently led to the
termination of the partial Federal government funding for EastLink. The Federal government's
reasoning being that it would only provide support and funding for projects that were toll free, hence
the Victorian Government's initial promise. The Victorian Government's decision to have EastLink
be a tolled motorway is one influenced by the operating and development costs of such a large civil
project and is largely motivated by the financial return of such a project. These concerns were later
shown as EastLink made a loss of nearly $93M in its first six months of operation, the largest reason
being that being a tolled motorway, it would not attract as many motorists than it would've being a
toll free road.
The second decision arose over the planning of the layout of EastLink, namely over the extent of
environmental damage that would be caused

Analysis Of For Whom The Bell Toll By John Donne
The introduction to For Whom The Bell Tolls is a poem by John Donne, of which the last line says
"any mans death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankinde; And therefore never send to
know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee" (Hemingway 3). This line encapsulates the theme of
the novel and defines the novel's meaning. Robert Jordan the main character of the novel arrives in
Spain as a volunteer, ready to fight and give his life for other people's freedom and right to self
determination. One of the reasons why this novel was so enjoyable was its focus on the individual
and intense discussions about life and death and morality of killing for and idea. However, the
reader can not help identifying with Jordan, as he plans his own future despite subconsciously
understanding his fate.
For Whom The Bell Tolls takes place during the Spanish Civil War, during a time period when
political divisions, between the right and Nd left were at all time highs around the world. The novel
discusses an execution of the fascists in one of the main character, Pillar's, town, and she describes
how political beliefs became enough to kill someone for. "Don Guillermo was a fascist but
otherwise there was nothing against him... He had a rude way of speaking and he was undoubtedly a
fascist and a member of their club"and he sat at noon and at evening in the cane chairs of their club
to read El Debate, to have his shoes shined, and to drink vermouth and seltzer and eat roasted

demand is low as during a recession, the company has to face a financial loss. But, now economic
conditions of the United States are improving as the economy is recovering, which is facilitating the
company to run its operations in an effective manner. Fluctuations in prices such as in cement prices
also exert their influence, and prevent the company from conduction of smooth business.

Solving The Solvency Issue Of The Highway Trust Fund
Solving the Solvency Issue of the Highway Trust Fund You might have heard recently that the

numerous other influential leaders, have been discussing means of addressing this "broken"
Highway Trust Fund. This issue has been consistently thrown on the back burner for some time and
due to this procrastination an issue that would have been an easy fix a few years ago has now
ballooned into a much larger issue. Lately it seems like every time I turn on the news I have seen
news reports of bridges collapsing and pot holes getting worse, it scary to think that I will one day
have children driving on these roads if our Government can't find a solution. As you can see this is
an imminent issue that has vast implications our economy, safety and sanity (i.e., traffic) and it is for
that reason that we as Americans need to speak up in regards to what should be done to address this
issue. There have been multiple proposed solutions, however, due to the underlying issues with each
of these solutions Congress has sat on their hands and there has yet to be a fix to address the ailing
Highway Trust Fund, in this article I will briefly describe a few of the solutions that have been
proposed and discuss what I believe to be a better approach to dealing with this ever–present issue.

The Transport Revolution Essay
The Transport Revolution Until late in the 1700's, in both Europe and America, most roads were
either rough tracks created by hoof and wheel or mere paths blazed through the wilderness. People
traveled by horseback or on foot between towns. During cold or wet seasons, traffic was especially
difficult or impossible. One of the problem was that each parish had to mend its own roads. Most
people in the parish had to work 4 or 6 days on the roads each year, or pay money instead. Not
surprisingly, they disliked this and skirted the work. During the eighteenth century, a new system
developed. Groups of men agreed to keep a stretch of road in good repair if they could charge a fee
to every one who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The fast running mail and stage– coaches needed better roads. In the early 1800s, three great
roadbuilders began to provide them. One of the most remarkable was John Metcalfe from
Knaresborough in Yorkshire (even though he was blind, he led a very active life). He was nearly
fifty years old when he constructed his first Turnpike road (1765) and in the next twenty seven
years, he supervised the construction of nearly 300 kilometers of Turnpikes (mostly in Yorkshire and
Lancashire). He paid special attention to the bed of the road and where the soil was soft, he laided
great quantities of heather as a foundation for layers of stone and gravel. John used jagged broken
stones which bound together under the pressure of wheeled vehicles (see source 3). Thomas Telford
was born in Westerkirk, Dumfries, Scotland, in 1757, the son of a poor Scottish shepherd. He
apprenticed for a time to a stonemason, but then trained as a surveyor, before moving to London in
1792 in search of work. He found employment working on Somerset House in the capitol, but later
moved to Portsmouth to work on the docks. A patron from Dumfries got him the post of Surveyor of
Public Works for the County of Shropshire. In this capacity he was responsible for the construction
of the Ellesmere Canal in 1793, and the Severn Suspension Bridge at Montford (1790). This bridge

Computer Science Reflection
My undergraduate major is measurement, and I have spent the last three years learning about optics,
mechanics, electric circuits, and coding. Among those courses, and following three–years of training
including pieces of research and coursework, I have realized that I am enamored with coding the
most. First of all, I enjoy the process of coding and verifying and adjusting the program. Taking my
digital signal processor coursework as an example, after I finished writing the code, it appeared that
the code might not have been correct because I could not receive the right temperature. So I set the
program to a debug mode and run every single step of my code and observed the feedback value.
This was a very diversion for me. With the criticism comes about because of single–step
investigating, I made a couple of theories about the issue, for example, the time postponed is not
sufficiently exact, or I might be coding about the wrong sticks. So I checked these hypotheses one
by one, and for reasons unknown, the issue is the piece of my program concerning time deferring
because the segment I used to quantify temperature which is DS18B20 is extremely strict on timing
arrangement. Getting the right outcome is exceptionally fulfilling, so is the procedure because
through speculation autonomously I procure much involvement and capability. Another thing that
intrigues me regarding computer science comes from what I have learned through our research
requirement in theory and technology

Divorce's Toll On Children'
"In the Bahamas, it is predicted that 25% of marriages will end in divorce ", (Brennen, 2004).
Divorce can be and ugly and costly affair, especially when it comes to a child's well–being. Divorce
affects children in a multitude of ways such as their physical, emotional, social and educational
development. According to the article "Divorce's Toll on Children" by Karl Zinsmeister, children
exposed to divorce are twice as likely to repeat a grade and five times likelier to be expelled or
suspended from school. In the early months after a divorce, young children especially between the
ages of 10–14, are less imaginative, more repetitive and passive watchers. They tend to be more
dependent, demanding, unaffectionate and disobedient than children from intact families. They are
more afraid of abandonment, loss of love and bodily harm. Children who come from divorced
families, especially young children, tend to be problematic in the classroom, not just emotionally but
academically as well.

Essay Texas Toll Roads
Texas Toll Roads – an examination of tolling and alternate measures
Nothing that has occurred in the last several years in Texas has been quite as controversial as the
new and increased usage of toll roads for new road construction. We have heard many statements
that the toll roads are being built as a money–making system for the state (and the Department of
Transportation). Statements have also been made to the effect that the state is "selling" the state, one
length of roadway at a time; that the current roads could be maintained by the state, with current
state funding levels. The main complaint is that the roads of Texas have always been free, and
should continue to be free. But are these arguments correct?
Texas Roads have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As well, the money which is currently being gathered to fund road maintenance and building in
Texas, is not all going to road maintenance or building.
At this time, 18.4 cents is gathered as a federal gasoline tax, and 20 cents is gathered as a state gas
tax. However, the federal tax is sent to Washington, and we only receive back 87 cents of every
dollar sent (the rest goes to other states). As an example of this, Rhode Island gets back $2.10 for
every dollar in gas tax that they send to Washington. For the state gas taxes gathered, it is even
worse.
Of the money gathered by the state, almost 1 billion dollars is sent to other state agencies (such as
the Department of Public Safety, Education, and other state colleges and state parks).3 This money
is regulated by the state government to go to these other agencies, which detracts from the
department of transportation's ability to handle road maintenance. So, even before taking into
account the increases due to inflation, the budget of TxDOT is decreased by $1 billion dollars
(almost half of which goes to the state's educational system).
The state is selling itself, one length of roadway at a time.
People seem to want to believe that the state is giving

The History of the Chicago Skyway
The history of the Chicago Skyway began in 1928, when the City Council of Chicago–motivated by
the desire to strengthen connections between the city and the country's Midwestern industrial base–
requested a study for an elevated roadway to be constructed above the Pennsylvania Rail Road's
right of way. Although this proposal did not ultimately come to fruition, the planning set the stage
on which the road would be built adjacent to this railroad. Concurrently, the Chicago Plan
Commission had begun researching a southern extension of Lake Shore Drive beyond Jackson Park
as a means to connect the city with Indiana. This study resulted in two possibilities for extending the
roadway. The first possibility was to extend Lake Shore Drive along Stony Island Avenue to the
Pennsylvania Railroad Right of way where it would proceed in the same manner as proposed in the
1928 plan; the second possibility was to simply extend the roadway along lake fill to Rainbow
Beach Park, where it would then merge onto South Commercial Avenue which would carry it to
Indiana Avenue.
A subsequent study in 1939 championed the Stony Island Avenue plan; however, the project was
ultimately shelved because Lake Shore Drive does not permit commercial traffic, and because the
roadway fell under the jurisdiction of the Parks Department which lacked a mechanism to finance
infrastructure investment. Due to these constraints, the City decided to drop its roadway connection
plan in 1945.
The project was revitalized

Summary Of The Health Toll Of Immigration
In the article "The Health Toll of Immigration" by Sabrina Tavernise explains that immigrants of
Hispanic heritage live longer than American born persons of Hispanic heritage. Many causes of this
have been suspected such as smoking and drinking but ultimately it is the American diet of fast food
that seems to be the reason for poor health (Tavernise 2013). Fast food was a luxury to some and to
others it was a money saver. Fast food is fast and cheap making it an easy stop for many families on
the run. The statistic is that "Hispanic immigrants live 2.9 years longer than American–born
Hispanics" (Tavernise 2013). America's fast food diet has also been moving into Mexico. When it

The Electronic Toll Collection in Malaysia, Questions and...
Introduction (Maximum 2 pages)
Two decades ago, the answer of the following question of possibilities of cash disappeared as a
payment method is clearly 'No'. Cash represents as financial transaction of any products or services.
The idea of having a cashless world has been thinking long times ago.
The risks of handling cash are high compared to electronic money including toll fares. The
introduction of electronic payment system has created an opportunity for the other payment system
to be begun. It may be difficult for cash to be as payment method to complete with new emerging
payment system (Taylor, 2006).
The Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) in Malaysia has been introduced in the year 1994 at PLUS
Expressway. It has evolved since then many changes have been made. ETC consists of system and
device that must be used together. It is types of complementary items. To use the SmartTag, users
must have Touch n Go card. The ETC penetration has been grown steadily on June 2006. The
average ETC penetration rate nationwide is 37% and 50% for Klang Valley toll highways.
Electronic Toll Collection is a technology enabling the electronic collection of toll payments. This
system is capable of determining the car is registered or not, and then informing the authorities of
toll payment violations (Khadijah and Dr. Wahid, 2010). Example of violation that can be recorded
is exemption violation and also long journey time.
ETC is the system that offers electronics passes that can be

The State's Transportation System
One of the challenges that the Texas government is failing to keep up with is the state's
transportation system due to the increased population. From 2000–2010 the population has grown
by over 4 million people. As of now Texas also has the largest transportation infrastructure in the
nation. So can the state of Texas keeps up with the projected increased population of fifty million
people by 2040? Or will the state cuts corners and let the infrastructure fall by the weigh side? These
are two of the concerns that Texans want answers to. As member of our communities we have to
hold the Texas Department of Transportation accountable to their mission statement; which is to
provide safe and reliable transportation solutions in Texas. To get ... Show more content on

The truth is, Texans already spend more than they should on the Texas transportation system. By
failing to invest in highways, the cost is shifted to consumers in the form of wasted time stuck in
traffic, damage to vehicles, accelerated tire wear, and increased likelihood of being in a serious
accident (The Cost). Drivers, truckers, visitors spend countless hours stuck in traffic, costing
businesses time and money, polluting the air, and the wear and tear of the roads (Agency 8). Also
due to congestion, costs the Texas economy 10.8 billion per year, which they push onto the citizens
through groceries and goods you buy that have transportation cost. The average annual hours of
delay a commuter has in a Texas Metro area are at or above 37 hours. The city of Houston leads
delays with about 50 hours per year. In 15 years if the transportation system is still underfunded
could rise up to 74 hours (The Cost 2). Every driver in Texas should know what the differences that
they are paying for the transportation system being underfunded and well–funded. Currently
households are investing $232 per year, which comes out costing drivers $6,095 in total vehicle use
and maintenance cost. If drivers invest an additional $279 reduces total vehicle cost to $4,228 and
saves them $1,558. An additional $402 more each year will also cut their cost to $3,652 and save
them $2,041. So raising highway investments will save drivers money in the long run. Drivers all

The Contingency Paradigm, The Resource Dependence And...
ntroduction:
In 1989, Compsis was established in São José dos Campos by Ailton and others from the aircraft
manufacturer company Embraer where they were software developers. At the beginning, the
founders planned to develop and integrate aircraft embedded systems. After they decided that the
plan would not be profitable the company decided to develop new applications by using their own
software technologies. The most important invention was their SICAT, which helped their business
with the Brazil government in ETC. In this paper, the company will be analyzed by using three
paradigms which are: the contingency paradigm, the resource dependence and transaction cost
paradigm, and the institutional and population ecology paradigm.
The Contingency Paradigm
Complexity:
Compsis can be described as a company with little complexity. This does not mean that they do not
have variance within the company, but because of their size they operate using a limited horizontal
form of complexity. Decisions are made among the five members and the means ends outcomes are
predictable for the company.
Closed Systems Approach:
There are two ways that the structure of businesses are analyzed. They are viewed from either a
closed system approach or an open system approach. Therefore, since Compsis does not have the
ability to create much complexity within its business structure, it is based in Brazil, and has little
influence outside of Brazil. Compsis seems to operate on a closed systems approach.

Congestion Of Congestion Based Fees
Congestion, particularly in urban centers, has received much attention due to the resulting higher
absolute travel times and lower travel time reliability, that lead to higher fuel consumption and
significant environmental impacts. In response to the high congestion delays and costs, researchers
and policymakers have studied the need and the implications of implementing congestion–based
fees in a bid to alleviate congested network links and/or areas, and divert traffic as needed,
temporally, spatially and modally, known as "triple divergence" (Downs, 1992). Proper evaluation of
any congestion management strategy requires explicitly setting performance measures that can be
used as indicators of how well the policy performs, and whether or not the initial goals are reached.
Congestion pricing is a widely used policy aiming to mitigate congestion along heavily congested
facilities. The rationale behind congestion pricing is that users are charged a toll fee in order to use
the facility, in a bid to alleviate congestion and improve travel time along this facility, and/or collect
revenue to be allocated in congestion–mitigation projects that would enhance the users' experience
and the system performance overall. There are different implementation schemes, depending on the
level of sophistication that the agency wishes to achieve: unique vs. differentiated toll by vehicle
type/class, fixed vs. dynamic toll rates based on the traffic conditions, tolled lanes in conjunction

Many politicians have already worked on such solutions but with less than perfect results. In this
article I will describe the solutions that Congress has proposed, the underlying issues with each of
these solutions and discuss what I believe to be a better approach that calls for a quality control unit
to provide regulatory support. To identify a viable solution, the first thing I did was look at proposed
solutions that are being discussed and pinpoint why they were not gaining support. These solutions
have been disregarded by Congress or the public for a number of reasons. Currently, Congress is as
divided as they have been in recent years and due to this divide the proposed fixes for the Highway
Trust Fund haven't gained traction in Congress or widespread public support. On one side of the
divide you have a group that would ignore any solution that has a gas tax increase attached to it and
on the other side you have a group that doesn't want to reward corporations that have been evading
taxes by keeping their profits overseas. There is also a solution that hasn't gained enough public
support due to the dislike of toll roads, I knew to find a solution that could garner enough support
from the public and Congress I had to find the issues that caused these solutions to stall out. The
most discussed fix for the Highway Trust Fund is the gas tax increase proposal that suggests the
current gas tax rate is currently too low and we need to

When Collecting Data For Sell
1. When collecting data to sell, it would be important to get as much information about the person as
possible so the company can know and understand who wants their product or who uses it. The
billing information would be storied so the company could send out more advertisements or even
different deals to the more loyal customers.. The race, demographic information, and the age would
be kept in order to evaluate what kind of customer the company is reaching the most. This would be
a great tool for the company to use so they know how to market their product or future products they
may have available. I wouldn't sell any of the information to another company. I don't think the
customer would appreciate their information being given out to people they haven't authorized. I
would however, give them the option to click a box that would allow other companies to send them
advertisements if they wanted too. This would give the customer the feeling their information is
private unless they wanted it to be given to someone else.
2. I wouldn't treat each case the same. I would send information to advertisers in order to help them
improve and grow their businesses if the customer had authorized this. I would give the law
enforcement agencies whatever they needed as long as they had the proper documentation
supporting their request. I would never give the news media anything. There would be no reason a
news media should need or want the personal information of one of my customers.

"Greed can be defined as the desire to acquire wealth or possessions beyond the needs of the
individual, especially when this accumulation of possession denies others legitimate needs or access

(Taflinger, 1996) The key word to consider is "excessive" which can be denoted as "going beyond
the usual, necessary, or proper limit or degree." The real problem to consider is the fact that "wealth
in this world is limited as population increases. If one person possesses an extensive amount of
wealth, this results in the reduction of another's wealth." (Taflinger, 1996) This leads to conflict

Despite an internet boom in 2006–2007, causing Telstra to receive a substantial amount of profit, the
share price remained well below the internet boom. In 2007, Trujillo's remuneration was $11.8
million and he collected 88.6 per cent of his possible short–term bonuses. Finally, when Sol
departed the company in 2009 the Telstra board gave him a $3 million 'termination payment' which
was not legally required.' Trujillo had been obtaining a large amount of assets, while diminishing the
value of shares owned by Australians, which is a pure act of greed. This has provided a negative
impact on the shares of Telstra. In addition, while Trujillo was attaining massive lump sums of
payments, "regional call centres were closing down and many Australians had lost their jobs.
Meanwhile, it was discovered that many basic phone services were lacking. Hundreds of suburban
towns do not have underground phone lines, with their phone lines hovered across burnt trees and
stock fence lines." (Schwab, 2010) Despite all of these circumstances, Trujillo was still focusing on
his hunger for money and most importantly his "greed."

For Whom the Bell Tolls(Term-Paper)
When reading an Ernest Hemingway novel, one must try very hard to focus on the joy and
encouragement found in the work. For Whom the Bell Tolls is full of love and beauty, but is so
greatly overshadowed by this lingering feeling of doom––a feeling that does not let you enjoy
reading, for you are always waiting for the let down, a chance for human nature to go horribly awry.
This feeling is broken up into three specific areas. In Ernest Hemingway's novel, For Whom the Bell
Tolls, humanity is exploited through brutal violence, unnecessary courage, and hopeless futility.
Hemingway has the uncanny gift of imagery, and he possesses a brilliant mastery of the English
language. He is adept at manipulating words and weaving complex ... Show more content on

To Hemingway's heroes, though, this last stand is the only imaginable way one can leave this earth
with a facet of dignity. It is the final penance, a last forgiveness of sins. "If I have the guts to do it,
I'll be all right." –kind of mentality. This last gung–ho attempt to show ones valiance is a gift in the
minds of Hemingway's heroes. But the interesting thing is to ponder what would have happened to
this person had they not "bravely" risked their life's and decided rather to find another way out of
this situation, to lead a normal life instead. Would the character still come to an untimely death in a
similar situation just further down the line? Or could he possibly turn the corner? W. M. Frohock
believes that regardless of the situation, the character is forced to do this insane, courageous act, for
he has no choice in the matter. "For Hemingway courage is a permanent element in a tragic formula:
life is a trap in which a man is bound to be beaten and at last destroyed, but he emerges triumphant,
in this full stature, if he manages to keep his chin up." (Frohock 169) Again we see this hope that if
he just "manages to keep his chin up" he has a chance at rise from this situation with honor and
distinction. Although the character is made out to thrive in this kind of condition, it is clear that he
has no choice. The characters are set

For Whom The Bell Tolls
The novel For Whom the Bell Tolls, written by Ernest Hemingway, is a story of passionate love
throughout the brutality of the Spanish Civil War. Hemingway uses his personal experiences to
portray the true meaning and feeling of this book. Ernest Miller Hemingway was born on July 21,
1899 in Oak Park, a suburb of Chicago, Illinois. The neighborhood he grew up in was straight–laced
and rigidly Protestant. Hemingway started his literary career publishing his work in his school
magazine. Later on in life, he signed up to join the military in World War II, but was rejected due to
his defective left eye from birth. Instead, he enlisted in the Missouri National Guard and remained
on the lookout for opportunities to progress to the front. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lastly, "Hemingway's inner experience of love, as it is portrayed in his novels, is a sense of basic
trust and object constancy which could allow his hero to retain the feeling of intense love even after
the beloved object is lost."(#6 p.357). The love between Robert Jordan and Maria is intense and
passionate and it parallels the love that Hemingway experienced. The genius style that Hemingway
utilizes in this novel truly enhances the richness of the superb story. The various themes in this novel
really give the story its depth and meaning. The theme of chaotic and brutal warfare is by far the
leading theme, as it is in many of Hemingway's novels. This novel's version of this theme is the
Spanish Civil War. Robert Jordan's mission of this war is to demolish a bridge, which in the long run
will help the Spanish Republicans in their goal of defeating the Fascist government. In several of
Hemingway's novels, the protagonist is a character of heroism and honor. These protagonists are
tough, experienced in the hard worlds they inhabit, and not obviously given to emotional display or
sensitive thinking. Robert Jordan is this type of protagonist and he is a humble, honorable man.
There is "Some notion of honor that makes a man a man, and distinguishes him from people who
merely follow their random impulses and who are by consequence messy." (#3 p.40). An example of
this in the novel is

Death Tolls In The Civil War

  • 1. Death Tolls In The Civil War Kyler Lee Cooper, Eberhart, Godley, Hales Computer 8, Science, ELA, SS 15 February 2016 Medical vs Military death tolls in the Civil War Killing. A horrible thing, indeed. But, widely misinterpreted. To most people, the first thing to come to mind would be a person making someone else die. This isn't necessarily true. Killing is just causing death. For example, Ebola isn't a person, yet it made people die. So did Dysentery, a disease in the Civil War that was nicknamed 'Minister of death'. I'm sure you can guess why. So, what did kill more people in the Civil War? The numbers show that out of all the deaths, more happened off the battlefield than on it, specifically the diseases and medical practices. The Union enlisted 2,893,304 soldiers. ... • 3. Bell Tolls Bullfighting For Whom the Bell Tolls, by Ernest Hemingway, was published in 1940. It is a novel set in the Spanish Civil War, which ravaged the country in the late 1930's. Tensions in Spain began to rise as early as 1931,when a group of left–wing Republicans overthrew the country's monarchy in a bloodless coup. The new Republican government then proposed controversial religious reforms that angered right–wing Fascists, who had the support of the army and the Catholic Church. Hemingway traveled extensively in Spain, and grew very interested in Spanish culture. Specifically, he writes about bullfighting, not only in this novel, but also in his other works as well. While Hemingway's novels carry a common theme, For Whom the Bell Tolls is no different. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Robert Jordan, as he nears his death knows that his time has come, and there is no escaping his death. Another character, Anselmo feels the same way about his nearly unavoidable death, "And since we must win to survive ultimately, it is necessary that the bridges must be blown" (99). Anselmo explains to Robert Jordan that the only way that they may survive the war is to win. In order to win, they must carry out their dangerous assignment to blow up a bridge; otherwise their foreseeable death will arrive. All characters in For Whom the Bell Tolls are ready to make the ultimate sacrifice in the face of war and death. To sacrifice one's life for their beliefs is something that takes bravery and pride. To go through the hardships of war is to suffer for others. Anselmo explains, "I suffer for others, as all good men should" (300). Anselmo believes that all men that are good and loyal to their side of the war should suffer for those who cannot fight. Not only would he sacrifice for others that share his beliefs, he would sacrifice his life for his guerrilla band members, which demonstrates the idea of close companionship in the face of death. Death is inevitable in every person's life, but death in these character's lives is easily predicted to be early, and this represents the sadness and sorrows in the innocence of war. There are many ways to die, and war is the saddest way for that to occur, but at the same time, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Death Toll Of Haiti It was typical late afternoon in Haiti capital of Port–au–Prince. People were strolling the streets, and local vendors were selling various goods at the Port–au–Prince historic Iron Market. Then at 4:53 pm on January 12, 2010 a 7.0 magnitude hit Haiti. Haiti had not seen a major earthquake like this in almost 200 years. People scrambled through the streets as the ground roared knocking down huge stone and brick building onto the streets of Port–au–Prince. An eyewitness describes the moment that the earthquake hit, "The earth screamed; a sound of thunder that came from its belly as it violently shook the plants, the car, the walls, the pavement that I stood on. I called out to everyone to walk out of the house quickly. It seemed like a long, long time. Then silence. Then screams from some of the residents of the rural neighborhood" (Clesca, 2010). This would be one of the deadliest earthquake of our generation. The estimated death toll was 316,000 deaths, and over 3 million people were displaced by the earthquake. Many people died when their dwelling collapsed and they were trapped under the rumble. People also died from falling objects, such as large building materials. This earthquake will ultimately change the structured of Haiti and leave many residents asking, who is responsible for the huge loss of life? As I have mention above, Haiti has not been hit by a major earthquake since the 18th century. Geologists first believed that Caribbean tectonic plates were responsible ... • 7. For Whom The Bell Tolls Innocence Many scholars can conclude that the path of war is the path of destruction. People lose their lives, their homes, and their innocence to war. War may bring overall victory to one country, but to both, it brings loss on many levels. The underlying theme of For Whom The Bell Tolls was a loss of innocence and having to give up one's personal beliefs to war. Three characters who faced the horrors of war were Maria, Joaquín, and Lieutenant Berrendo. In For Whom The Bell Tolls, Maria was a beautiful girl who suffered tremendously during the war until she was finally rescued by Pilar. Maria lost her innocence to the war when she witnessed her parents death and when she was raped numerous times by soldiers. "...they shot her with my father...I saw both of them shot..." (Hemingway, 350). Maria then goes on to explain that after being humiliated by the soldiers, she is taken to her father's office where she is raped. "...into the office of my father where they laid me onto the couch. And it was there that the bad things were done" (Hemingway, 353). Everything Maria had faced from the war affected her deeply. At one point Maria explains her emotions by saying, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lieutenant Berrendo is mandated to have his men decapitate the guerillas after a battle. Berrendo gives the order, and walks away from the field because, "He did not wish to stay to see his orders being carried out" (Hemingway, 322). War was definitely something Lieutenant Berrendo did not like because he often "...felt only the hollowness that comes from action" (Hemingway, 326). Berrendo believed that some of the actions that they had to take were not necessary. Even though he knew that the heads of their enemies were necessary for proof and identification, Berrendo believed the whole concept was barbarous. • 11. For Whom The Bell Tolls Summary December 7, 1941. The sun was just coming up to awaken the sleeping sailors and to greet the early birds of the brave me on the dock and ships in the Pearl Harbor of Oahu. This is how the American people view this table turning day for the war. In the 21st Century, the United States of America think of Japan as an ally, our partner. Japan and the United States were always friendly competitors ( ). But those who have been in that Harbor and those who survived will never forget what happened that day. When WWII started the Japanese were known as "Japs" ( ). The Japanese (at the time) believed themselves to be a divine race to rule Asia ( ). That also kind of triggered a feeling of a high and mighty response within the country of Japan. They ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "It forged a super power. Isolationist and interventionist impulses that had always divided America converged into a White–hot fury that could not be taken away or even close to burning out anytime soon ( ). The American people were burning with rage and were hungry for war. The European Nations were waiting for the chance to get America into the war, to get a 50/50 chance of winning the war. Once Pearl Harbor had taken place, Winston Churchill prime minister of England traveled to meet with President Roosevelt to convince him to join the war. • 13. The Events Factors Caused By Driving And Low Standard... As the preceding Tables 5–8 depicted, five scenario factors were investigated. First, drivers at Path 1 have higher speed and low standard deviation of speed, standard deviation of lane deviation, and acceleration noise than other paths. Vehicles from the on–ramp before toll plaza (i.e., Paths 4 and 5), as shown in Figure 3 (a), have lower speed and higher dangerous behavior (i.e., standard deviation of speed, acceleration noise, and standard deviation of lane deviation) compared to Path 1 at all zones. It can be explained that vehicles from the on–ramp perform sudden lane changing maneuvers before and after the toll plaza. Additionally, vehicles from Path 3 which is driving through the express lanes to the off–ramp after the toll plaza have also lower speed and riskier behavior. This is because drivers are reducing vehicle's speed to change lanes after the toll plaza. Furthermore, vehicles from Path 2 which is driving from mainline to cash toll payment and back to mainline have lower speed at and after the toll plaza, and riskier indicators at all zones due to speed variation and sudden lane changing before and after the toll plaza. Second, for signage, drivers who navigate in scenarios with Case 2 signage, which is adding the DMS sign at the on–ramp, removing the third overhead sign, and relocate the second overhead sign as shown in Figure 3 (b), exhibited lower speed variation after the on–ramp than drivers who perform scenarios of the base condition with the second and ... • 15. The Death Toll Of The Genocide The crime of committing, destroying, or trying to destroy the existence of a group of people because of their racial (whose identity is defined by physical), national (whose identity is defined by a common country of nationality or national origin), ethnic (whose identity is defined by physical characteristics), or religious group (whose identity is defined by common religious creeds, beliefs, practices, or rituals), is known as genocide, and this term did not exist before 1944. Usually the death toll of the genocide is in thousands and in some cases in millions. According to the Canadian scholars, Frank Chalk and Kurt Jonassohn, they have identified four main types of genocide: first, Ideological: this type of genocide is committed in an effort to achieve an ideal social structure in which all members of society are alike or hold the same belief. For example the Armenian genocide in 1915, when the leaders of the Turkish government killed over 1.5 millions of Turkey's Armenians living in the Ottoman Empire. Also, Cambodian, and Jews/Roma in Germany. Second type, Retributive: this genocide mostly to occur when one group dominates another group and fears its rebellion or when the other group actually rebels. For example the genocide in Rwanda in 1994, when members of the Hutu ethnic majority in Rwanda murdered as many as 800,000 people, mostly of the Tutsi minority. The third type is Developmental: usually the government use this type of genocide against the native people to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Analysis Of For Whom The Bell Tolls For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway is a historical fiction love story, set in Spain during the Spanish Civil war, which heavily develops thematically from a line about human nature from John Donne's Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions of "No man is an Iland; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main," (Preface). Within the novel, anti–fascist American man, Robert Jordan, transforms from a distrustful man into an altruist for his loved ones, who discovers the idea Donne put onto paper and Hemingway transcribed, creating a true, convincing, and logical conclusion (4, 247); however, this change almost solely comes from the plot device of romantic love, which is only able to be understood as logical with a suspension of disbelief (210). In order to judge the plot of the journey of the protagonist and the ending of the novel, his development as a character should first be analyzed. Initially, when coming to the revolution, Robert Jordan views the world as a black and white battle of ideas and his only fear was not to complete his "duty" to his cause in life and war, rather than the people the fighting truly stands for (51), which also extends to his lack of initial trust in his comrade, Anselmo (4). Jordan as an independent loner represents a man believing he is "an Iland," in how he chooses to separate himself from others and believes his ideology is flawless, rather than trying to improve as a human. Jordan eventually falls out of his linear views, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Pros And Cons Of Tollway Vs. Freeway In the third debate in class, we talked about Tollway vs. freeway. A tollway is an open or private road for which a free or toll is evaluated for passage. It is a shape of road pricing typically executed to help recover the cost of road maintenance and construction. Tollway requires vehicles to stop or back off; manual toll gathering sits wastes time and raises vehicle working expenses. The activity redirection coming about because of the tolls expands congestion on the road system and makes it less useful. A freeway is a controlled–get to a multi–path expressway that does not have tolls. Traffic flow on a highway is unhindered in light of the fact that there are no moving signals, convergences, or at–level crossings with different railroads, streets, or passerby ways. Ways out and entrances to the highway are given at interchanges by slippy streets, which consider speed changes between the interstate and collector streets. Opposing directions of travel are for the most part isolated by a focal reservation containing a traffic obstruction, grass, or a median strip. This eliminates the contentions with other directions and enhances safety and limit. The first group talked about Public tollways and why they are absolutely necessary. Toll roads can be built at no cost to taxpayers. The first idea of toll streets was to raise reserves for roadway upkeep by putting the weight of users, as opposed to neighborhood citizens. Today open organizations offer long–term concession ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Child Abuse's Deathly Toll Ashley Flores Shawn Arnston English 1101 13 March 2016 Child abuse's deathly toll Child abuse, a very sensitive yet susceptible issue. Many people do not want to face the consequences that child abuse can impose in children's futures. The way a child is raised plays a very important role in how the child is going to grow up to be. More than likely if a child is raised in a stable, well brought up home, the child is going to grow up to be an average individual. On the other hand, if a child is raised in a home where they are physically and mentally abused, they have a greater chance of developing mental issues, and leading a wrongful life. Child abuse plays the most influential role when it comes down to criminal behaviour. Most identified ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some believe that genes and other mental disorders are the biggest cause of a life of crime. In 1993 the Netherlands conducted a study where a family of Dutch men with an aggressive history were reportedly missing the same gene. (BBC News, Are Murderers born or made?) Although missing this gene may cause violent outbreaks, the factor that triggers it abundantly, is the occurences in your childhood. As Jim Fallon says in his TED talk video, to fully express this gene you have to at a very early age or before puberty, be exposed to a very traumatic 3D event. Even though mental illness also plays a role in these notorious crimes, when a person tried to use the insanity plea, the justice system often goes back to see if their childhood persisted of any abuse or neglect. Although many factors play a role in the influence of these notorious crimes, child abuse is clearly the most influential. Child adolescence is a time period in our life that is the most crucial to us as humans. • 25. Langthwaite Short Walk Beginning from the cosy village of Langthwaite, this short walk has outstanding views. Fine heather moorland and sparkling streams help to compensate for the ravages of the lead mines and spoil heaps. Langthwaite is acknowledged as the capital of Arkengarthdale and lies on the road from Reeth to Tan Hill. The road was constructed in c.1741 and it was one of the first turnpikes. Its original purpose was to transport coal from the Tan Hill mines to be used in the smelting furnaces around Langthwaite. Turnpike roads extracted tolls from travellers in order to pay for their building and maintenance. They often took advantage of earlier routes, especially through valleys, which were formerly toll free. Turnpikes were resented by the packhorse and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bell pits were one of the earliest methods of mining for lead and other minerals. A vertical shaft was sunk to a depth of about 20 feet (6m) before digging horizontally, along the vein. The ore and waste were removed by a hand winch and a bucket. Due to poor ventilation, these workings could not progress very far before the air became foul. There was also the danger of the tunnel collapsing. To prevent this happening another bell pit was sunk close by. This procedure was repeated many times, resulting in a line of bell pits spaced out along the length of the vein. During our descent to Booze the scenery of Calver Hill, Fremington Edge and lower Arkengarthdale rouses the senses. Booze is a small hamlet, consisting of just a few farms and cottages, but unfortunately it does not have any licenced premises as its name implies. The art of the Book of Kells is a complicated synthesis of Christian iconography, derived from the Mediterranean world, and the northern European predilection for brilliant colour and abstract pattern. In the religious scenes, abstract values dominate at the expense of naturalism, imbuing the images with a detached, visionary quality. The bulk of the painting, however, appears to be as much decorative as religious in content. The book has a broad palette of colors with purple, lilac, red, pink, green, as well as, yellow being the colors greatest frequently used in the writing. The lavish illumination of the program of the book is far better than any other enduring insular gospel book. There are ten persisting full page illuminations including two evangelist pictures, three pages with the four evangelist symbols, a carpet page, a minuscule of the Virgin Child, a minuscule of Christ enthroned, a minuscule of the Arrest of Jesus, and the Temptation of Christ. Whether it's how we communicate and access information to how we make payments, technology has changed it. It is clear that the way we communicate has changed abundantly over the past century. Many years ago the only form of communication was the hand written letter, with it taking weeks to months to get a reply. Now with modern technology we can instantly send an email and can receive a reply in the same day. The fact that communication has become faster can allow organising an event, such as a birthday, easier. Mobile phones have also allowed us to make calls to anyone, anywhere, anytime. If I'm at the shops and can't remember if I was supposed to get milk, a quick call home allows me to check. Many people live in different countries to their families and the advancement in technology allows them to video call a person and see them on the other end, which helps them to feel closer than they are. The mobile phone's main feature may be for communication but they can now do so much more than just make a call. You can now access the internet, send emails, use the calender and write notes to yourself, keeping the things you need to do in the palm of your hand. Although the majority of those choices may be for the greater good, some can hurt others. We are put to the task, and we have several obstacles in our way, and it is our duty to accomplish that task. In Ernest Hemingway's For Whom the Bells Tolls, the character of Robert Jordan risks his life to fight fascism to do his duty, take care of Maria and to wash away his father suicide. To begin with, Robert Jordan takes care of the woman he loves, Maria. Ever since Robert Jordan went with the reclusive group in the mountain, the two of them had empathy of love towards each other. Robert Jordan tries to reject the adulation they have for each other because he thinks that after the bridge is blown, they will not see each other anymore. Maria refuses to think that and shows all her love towards him. Soon Robert Jordan seems to care more about Maria and uses their passion for each other as a distraction from the war. Hewson states that "Jordan comes to realize that he and Maria are 'making an alliance against death' through their love for each other (6). Their love for each other designates them forget about everything, and all they want to do is be together. The "alliance against death" that they have is significant in the story. Being together assembles them to feel powerful and gives them both hope and strength during their hard times there. This helps out both of these characters in their own ... For a project that had a final total cost of $2.5B, sustainability, that is ensuring that its relevance and usefulness to the society today and for the foreseeable future is a pivotal part of EastLink. Two significant decisions that have affected the EastLink project are firstly, the decision to develop EastLink as a tollway and secondly, an environmental issue involving potential damage that would be caused to the nearby Mullum Mullum Valley. EastLink was a multibillion–dollar project, and its funding stemmed primarily from the Federal government, however as the project progressed, the Victorian Government switched to the stance that the EastLink project was no longer viable as a toll free road which subsequently led to the termination of the partial Federal government funding for EastLink. The Federal government's reasoning being that it would only provide support and funding for projects that were toll free, hence the Victorian Government's initial promise. The Victorian Government's decision to have EastLink be a tolled motorway is one influenced by the operating and development costs of such a large civil project and is largely motivated by the financial return of such a project. These concerns were later shown as EastLink made a loss of nearly $93M in its first six months of operation, the largest reason being that being a tolled motorway, it would not attract as many motorists than it would've being a toll free road. The second decision arose over the planning of the layout of EastLink, namely over the extent of environmental damage that would be caused ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Analysis Of For Whom The Bell Toll By John Donne The introduction to For Whom The Bell Tolls is a poem by John Donne, of which the last line says "any mans death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankinde; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee" (Hemingway 3). This line encapsulates the theme of the novel and defines the novel's meaning. Robert Jordan the main character of the novel arrives in Spain as a volunteer, ready to fight and give his life for other people's freedom and right to self determination. One of the reasons why this novel was so enjoyable was its focus on the individual and intense discussions about life and death and morality of killing for and idea. However, the reader can not help identifying with Jordan, as he plans his own future despite subconsciously understanding his fate. For Whom The Bell Tolls takes place during the Spanish Civil War, during a time period when political divisions, between the right and Nd left were at all time highs around the world. The novel discusses an execution of the fascists in one of the main character, Pillar's, town, and she describes how political beliefs became enough to kill someone for. This issue has been consistently thrown on the back burner for some time and due to this procrastination an issue that would have been an easy fix a few years ago has now ballooned into a much larger issue. The Transport Revolution Essay The Transport Revolution Until late in the 1700's, in both Europe and America, most roads were either rough tracks created by hoof and wheel or mere paths blazed through the wilderness. People traveled by horseback or on foot between towns. During cold or wet seasons, traffic was especially difficult or impossible. One of the problem was that each parish had to mend its own roads. Most people in the parish had to work 4 or 6 days on the roads each year, or pay money instead. Not surprisingly, they disliked this and skirted the work. During the eighteenth century, a new system developed. Groups of men agreed to keep a stretch of road in good repair if they could charge a fee to every one who ... He was nearly fifty years old when he constructed his first Turnpike road (1765) and in the next twenty seven years, he supervised the construction of nearly 300 kilometers of Turnpikes (mostly in Yorkshire and Lancashire). He paid special attention to the bed of the road and where the soil was soft, he laided great quantities of heather as a foundation for layers of stone and gravel. John used jagged broken stones which bound together under the pressure of wheeled vehicles (see source 3). Among those courses, and following three–years of training including pieces of research and coursework, I have realized that I am enamored with coding the most. First of all, I enjoy the process of coding and verifying and adjusting the program. Taking my digital signal processor coursework as an example, after I finished writing the code, it appeared that the code might not have been correct because I could not receive the right temperature. So I set the program to a debug mode and run every single step of my code and observed the feedback value. This was a very diversion for me. With the criticism comes about because of single–step investigating, I made a couple of theories about the issue, for example, the time postponed is not sufficiently exact, or I might be coding about the wrong sticks. So I checked these hypotheses one by one, and for reasons unknown, the issue is the piece of my program concerning time deferring because the segment I used to quantify temperature which is DS18B20 is extremely strict on timing arrangement. Getting the right outcome is exceptionally fulfilling, so is the procedure because through speculation autonomously I procure much involvement and capability. Statements have also been made to the effect that the state is "selling" the state, one length of roadway at a time; that the current roads could be maintained by the state, with current state funding levels. However, the federal tax is sent to Washington, and we only receive back 87 cents of every dollar sent (the rest goes to other states). The History of the Chicago Skyway The history of the Chicago Skyway began in 1928, when the City Council of Chicago–motivated by the desire to strengthen connections between the city and the country's Midwestern industrial base– requested a study for an elevated roadway to be constructed above the Pennsylvania Rail Road's right of way. Although this proposal did not ultimately come to fruition, the planning set the stage on which the road would be built adjacent to this railroad. Concurrently, the Chicago Plan Commission had begun researching a southern extension of Lake Shore Drive beyond Jackson Park as a means to connect the city with Indiana. This study resulted in two possibilities for extending the roadway. The first possibility was to extend Lake Shore Drive along Stony Island Avenue to the Pennsylvania Railroad Right of way where it would proceed in the same manner as proposed in the 1928 plan; the second possibility was to simply extend the roadway along lake fill to Rainbow Beach Park, where it would then merge onto South Commercial Avenue which would carry it to Indiana Avenue. A subsequent study in 1939 championed the Stony Island Avenue plan; however, the project was ultimately shelved because Lake Shore Drive does not permit commercial traffic, and because the roadway fell under the jurisdiction of the Parks Department which lacked a mechanism to finance infrastructure investment. Cash represents as financial transaction of any products or services. The idea of having a cashless world has been thinking long times ago. The risks of handling cash are high compared to electronic money including toll fares. The introduction of electronic payment system has created an opportunity for the other payment system to be begun. It may be difficult for cash to be as payment method to complete with new emerging payment system (Taylor, 2006). Drivers, truckers, visitors spend countless hours stuck in traffic, costing businesses time and money, polluting the air, and the wear and tear of the roads (Agency 8). The Contingency Paradigm, The Resource Dependence And... ntroduction: In 1989, Compsis was established in São José dos Campos by Ailton and others from the aircraft manufacturer company Embraer where they were software developers. At the beginning, the founders planned to develop and integrate aircraft embedded systems. After they decided that the plan would not be profitable the company decided to develop new applications by using their own software technologies. The most important invention was their SICAT, which helped their business with the Brazil government in ETC. In this paper, the company will be analyzed by using three paradigms which are: the contingency paradigm, the resource dependence and transaction cost paradigm, and the institutional and population ecology paradigm. The Contingency Paradigm Complexity: Compsis can be described as a company with little complexity. This does not mean that they do not have variance within the company, but because of their size they operate using a limited horizontal form of complexity. Decisions are made among the five members and the means ends outcomes are predictable for the company. Closed Systems Approach: There are two ways that the structure of businesses are analyzed. They are viewed from either a closed system approach or an open system approach. Therefore, since Compsis does not have the ability to create much complexity within its business structure, it is based in Brazil, and has little influence outside of Brazil. • 63. Congestion Of Congestion Based Fees Congestion, particularly in urban centers, has received much attention due to the resulting higher absolute travel times and lower travel time reliability, that lead to higher fuel consumption and significant environmental impacts. In response to the high congestion delays and costs, researchers and policymakers have studied the need and the implications of implementing congestion–based fees in a bid to alleviate congested network links and/or areas, and divert traffic as needed, temporally, spatially and modally, known as "triple divergence" (Downs, 1992). Proper evaluation of any congestion management strategy requires explicitly setting performance measures that can be used as indicators of how well the policy performs, and whether or not the initial goals are reached. Congestion pricing is a widely used policy aiming to mitigate congestion along heavily congested facilities. The rationale behind congestion pricing is that users are charged a toll fee in order to use the facility, in a bid to alleviate congestion and improve travel time along this facility, and/or collect revenue to be allocated in congestion–mitigation projects that would enhance the users' experience and the system performance overall. There are different implementation schemes, depending on the level of sophistication that the agency wishes to achieve: unique vs. differentiated toll by vehicle type/class, fixed vs. dynamic toll rates based on the traffic conditions, tolled lanes in conjunction with ... According to the webmd article "The Toll of Sleep Loss in America" it states that "Today, about 20% of Americans report that they get less than 6 hours of sleep on average." (Davis, 2006). The human body should be getting at least 8 hours of sleep at night on average. Sleep Deprivation can also cause driving accidents because people are out on the road while tired. • 67. Safety And Sanity Of The United States Trust Fund You might have heard recently that the United States Trust Fund is currently experiencing a solvency issue due to an increased cost associated with financing road projects. The members of the United States Congress, as well as numerous other influential leaders, have been discussing means of addressing this "broken" Highway Trust Fund. This issue has been consistently thrown on the back burner for some time and due to this procrastination an issue that would have been an easy fix a few years ago has now ballooned into a much larger issue. Lately it seems like every time I turn on the news I have seen news reports of bridges collapsing and pot holes getting worse, it scary to think that I will one day have children driving on these roads if ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many politicians have already worked on such solutions but with less than perfect results. In this article I will describe the solutions that Congress has proposed, the underlying issues with each of these solutions and discuss what I believe to be a better approach that calls for a quality control unit to provide regulatory support. To identify a viable solution, the first thing I did was look at proposed solutions that are being discussed and pinpoint why they were not gaining support. These solutions have been disregarded by Congress or the public for a number of reasons. Currently, Congress is as divided as they have been in recent years and due to this divide the proposed fixes for the Highway Trust Fund haven't gained traction in Congress or widespread public support. On one side of the divide you have a group that would ignore any solution that has a gas tax increase attached to it and on the other side you have a group that doesn't want to reward corporations that have been evading taxes by keeping their profits overseas. There is also a solution that hasn't gained enough public support due to the dislike of toll roads, I knew to find a solution that could garner enough support from the public and Congress I had to find the issues that caused these solutions to stall out. The most discussed fix for the Highway Trust Fund is the gas tax increase proposal that suggests the current gas tax rate is currently too low and we need to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. When Collecting Data For Sell 1. When collecting data to sell, it would be important to get as much information about the person as possible so the company can know and understand who wants their product or who uses it. The billing information would be storied so the company could send out more advertisements or even different deals to the more loyal customers.. The race, demographic information, and the age would be kept in order to evaluate what kind of customer the company is reaching the most. This would be a great tool for the company to use so they know how to market their product or future products they may have available. I wouldn't sell any of the information to another company. I don't think the customer would appreciate their information being given out to people they haven't authorized. I would however, give them the option to click a box that would allow other companies to send them advertisements if they wanted too. This would give the customer the feeling their information is private unless they wanted it to be given to someone else. 2. I wouldn't treat each case the same. I would send information to advertisers in order to help them improve and grow their businesses if the customer had authorized this. I would give the law enforcement agencies whatever they needed as long as they had the proper documentation supporting their request. I would never give the news media anything. There would be no reason a news media should need or want the personal information of one of my customers. 3. I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Assignment 1 ASSIGNMENT 1 – CORPORATE CRIME "Greed can be defined as the desire to acquire wealth or possessions beyond the needs of the individual, especially when this accumulation of possession denies others legitimate needs or access to those or other resources It is an extreme or excessive desire for resources and symbols of wealth." (Taflinger, 1996) The key word to consider is "excessive" which can be denoted as "going beyond the usual, necessary, or proper limit or degree." The real problem to consider is the fact that "wealth in this world is limited as population increases. If one person possesses an extensive amount of wealth, this results in the reduction of another's wealth." (Taflinger, 1996) This leads to conflict within human ... In 2007, Trujillo's remuneration was $11.8 million and he collected 88.6 per cent of his possible short–term bonuses. Finally, when Sol departed the company in 2009 the Telstra board gave him a $3 million 'termination payment' which was not legally required.' Trujillo had been obtaining a large amount of assets, while diminishing the value of shares owned by Australians, which is a pure act of greed. This has provided a negative impact on the shares of Telstra. In addition, while Trujillo was attaining massive lump sums of payments, "regional call centres were closing down and many Australians had lost their jobs. Meanwhile, it was discovered that many basic phone services were lacking. Hundreds of suburban towns do not have underground phone lines, with their phone lines hovered across burnt trees and stock fence lines." (Schwab, 2010) Despite all of these circumstances, Trujillo was still focusing on his hunger for money and most importantly his "greed." Another example of a company's corporate collapse which was due to corporate greed was ABC learning centres, which was founded by Eddy Groves. ABC learning centres was once the world's largest publicly listed childcare company, and Groves was classified as the richest Australian ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. For Whom the Bell Tolls(Term-Paper) When reading an Ernest Hemingway novel, one must try very hard to focus on the joy and encouragement found in the work. For Whom the Bell Tolls is full of love and beauty, but is so greatly overshadowed by this lingering feeling of doom––a feeling that does not let you enjoy reading, for you are always waiting for the let down, a chance for human nature to go horribly awry. This feeling is broken up into three specific areas. In Ernest Hemingway's novel, For Whom the Bell Tolls, humanity is exploited through brutal violence, unnecessary courage, and hopeless futility. Hemingway has the uncanny gift of imagery, and he possesses a brilliant mastery of the English language. He is adept at manipulating words and weaving complex ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To Hemingway's heroes, though, this last stand is the only imaginable way one can leave this earth with a facet of dignity. It is the final penance, a last forgiveness of sins. "If I have the guts to do it, I'll be all right." –kind of mentality. This last gung–ho attempt to show ones valiance is a gift in the minds of Hemingway's heroes. But the interesting thing is to ponder what would have happened to this person had they not "bravely" risked their life's and decided rather to find another way out of this situation, to lead a normal life instead. Would the character still come to an untimely death in a similar situation just further down the line? Or could he possibly turn the corner? W. M. Frohock believes that regardless of the situation, the character is forced to do this insane, courageous act, for he has no choice in the matter. "For Hemingway courage is a permanent element in a tragic formula: life is a trap in which a man is bound to be beaten and at last destroyed, but he emerges triumphant, in this full stature, if he manages to keep his chin up." (Frohock 169) Again we see this hope that if he just "manages to keep his chin up" he has a chance at rise from this situation with honor and distinction. Although the character is made out to thrive in this kind of condition, it is clear that he has no choice. The characters are set ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. For Whom The Bell Tolls The novel For Whom the Bell Tolls, written by Ernest Hemingway, is a story of passionate love throughout the brutality of the Spanish Civil War. Hemingway uses his personal experiences to portray the true meaning and feeling of this book. Ernest Miller Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899 in Oak Park, a suburb of Chicago, Illinois. The neighborhood he grew up in was straight–laced and rigidly Protestant. Hemingway started his literary career publishing his work in his school magazine. Later on in life, he signed up to join the military in World War II, but was rejected due to his defective left eye from birth. Instead, he enlisted in the Missouri National Guard and remained on the lookout for opportunities to progress to the front. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lastly, "Hemingway's inner experience of love, as it is portrayed in his novels, is a sense of basic trust and object constancy which could allow his hero to retain the feeling of intense love even after the beloved object is lost."(#6 p.357). The love between Robert Jordan and Maria is intense and passionate and it parallels the love that Hemingway experienced. The genius style that Hemingway utilizes in this novel truly enhances the richness of the superb story. The various themes in this novel really give the story its depth and meaning. The theme of chaotic and brutal warfare is by far the leading theme, as it is in many of Hemingway's novels. This novel's version of this theme is the Spanish Civil War. Robert Jordan's mission of this war is to demolish a bridge, which in the long run will help the Spanish Republicans in their goal of defeating the Fascist government. In several of Hemingway's novels, the protagonist is a character of heroism and honor. These protagonists are tough, experienced in the hard worlds they inhabit, and not obviously given to emotional display or sensitive thinking. Robert Jordan is this type of protagonist and he is a humble, honorable man. There is "Some notion of honor that makes a man a man, and distinguishes him from people who merely follow their random impulses and who are by consequence messy." (#3 p.40). An example of this in the novel is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
