8. Idea 1
Who Salvatore Luciana is the head boss of the modern day New York mafia. He is more commonly known as lucky
Luciano, he adopted this name after he survived a brutal attack where his throat was cut wide open from an
assailant using a cut throat razor blade. Salvatore runs all of the organized crime and illegal activities within New
York and several other states.
What Luciano’s most trusted associates Carlo Gambino and Frank Costello conspire against Salvatore and frame him for
the murder of his own wife. This frame leads to Luciano's downfall as he end up in Americas most secure prison on
Alcatraz island. With Salvatore in prison Gambino and Costello rise up and take over the American mafia and
become the most powerful men in America. A few years go by and Luciano decides he can no longer stay in prison
knowing that he was betrayed by his most loyal friends and that they killed his wife just too frame him, so by some
luck he escapes the infamous Alcatraz prison and begins his journey to hunt down the men who betrayed him and
to avenge his wife.
Why Carlo Gambino and Frank Costello always wanted to one day run the New York mafia so they decided to start early
and frame their once good friend Charles Luciano, they brutally murdered Luciano's wife Giorgia Luciana and
planted evidence to suggest Charles was the one who committed the murder.
When The time period this takes place is during the late 1920’s to the early 1930’s, around this time this was the height of
the prohibition and the Italian mob. The prohibition was a nationwide ban on the production, importation,
transportation and sale of alcohol.
Where This story mainly takes place in New York as that’s where most of the action takes place, however parts of the story
can change location for example when Charles gets sent to Alcatraz island which is on the other side of America,
and as he journeys across America to hunt down his betrayers.
13. Existing Product – The Godfather
Only image of a person which
suggests that he is the main
character and who the film is
about.
A spotlight in the background
focusing on Marlon Brando,
which also tells us that he is
character everyone is focusing
on.
The outfit he is wearing
tells us that he is a man of
wealth and lives a good life
as tuxedos represent high
status and importance
The rose on his tuxedo
could suggest
bloodshed and violence
as red signifies blood.
The movie name is
in a yellow/gold
colour which also
hints at wealth and
power
The strings attached to the
word father could imply
that the father is being
controlled by other people
behind the scenes.
14. Existing Product – taxi driver
The location and taxi are seen
behind De Niro's character which
indicates they are a big influence
on his life.
De Niro's character is the
only person in the street
which suggests the idea
of loneliness and
isolation within his life.
The colour at the bottom of
the poster is the same as the
taxi. This is in order to use
the taxi colour as branding
for the film.
The taxi stands out from
the dirty streets of new
York which suggests the
taxi is a ray of light in
comparison.
15. Existing Product –
public enemies
The dark clothing contrasts with
the bright building’s around him
which suggests that Depp's
character himself is a dark person
inside and a dangerous man.
The American flag Is clearly
visible in the background which
obviously tell us it is set in
America and the idea of America
being a powerful country could
indicate that johnny’s character is
also a very powerful person.
His machine gun cleverley merges with
the colour of his clothing, this could
have been used to imply that it would
be hard to spot someone like this as
they merge in with society very well.
The gun is also very large which tells us
that he is not a man to be messed with
and will most definitely use it.
The idea of wearing a suit could tell
us many things. The first thing is
that it implies a combination of
wealth and elegance as suits are an
expensive item of clothing and
mainly wealthy people wear them.
The other thing the suit signifies is
the time period the film is set in,
maybe the 1930s -50s.
The colours contrast from light to
dark down the poster, this could
suggest he is turning his back on
being a moral person and is
walking to a darker life.
16. Existing Product -
Goodfellas The main image is of the three
main characters, this is because
they are recognisable actors
mainly Robert de Niro and Joe
Pesci as these two actors are
associated with gangster genre.
From this main image we can
also see they are wearing the
standard black suits which are
also linked to the gangster era.
The less noticeable image on the
poster is of a man lying dead in the
street, this clearly tells us that the
film is linked with violence and that
dead bodies may become a
common thing to witness in this
film.
The font that the title is
written is a very old school
style of font. The reason this
is used is to show that the
film is set in a much earlier
time to when it was made
and to show that the film is
not about any modern
activities.
Most posters have to have
something that wants people to
watch it and buy it, so for this
poster I think that the selling point
is the actors and the director. As
Martin Scorsese at the time was
very well known for doing other
great films that also starred Robert
de Niro and Joe Pesci.
17. Research Summary
• What have you learned from your research?
From my research I have learnt about many different aspects of images
and texts that are used on film posters and how these different types of
things are used to grab viewers attention when viewing the poster
• What aspects of the research will you include within your on work?
18. Bibliography
1. Francis Ford Coppola (1972) The Godfather
2. Martin Scorsese (1976) Taxi Driver
3. Michael Mann (2009) Public enemies
4. Martin Scorsese (1990) Goodfellas
19. Poster
• I have created a movie poster using photoshop. I was given a random film
name using a website called film title generator and from there I had to
come up with a design for the poster that linked to the name of the movie.
On the poster the film is titled ‘forged in fire’ so using photoshop I had to
come up with what would work well with the title so as you can see I have a
samurai warrior as the main image with him blended into the sunset. I used
the sun as the background as I thought the idea of a sun and fire had some
kind of link as they are both very similar.
• Personally I think the making of my poster was relatively good as this was
my first time really using photoshop and this was my first major film poster I
have made. I feel as if I used photoshop before the poster could have some
better touches to it but apart from that I think it has gone very well
• As this was my first time using photoshop I learnt many new things. For
example I learned how to cut the background out of images so that they can
fit into the background, another thing I learnt on photoshop was the
different options to blend the images so that they merge into the
background and look very real.
20. Poster
• Learning how to use photoshop will definitely help me in the upcoming project as becoming
better at using these things will make me more efficient when it comes to actually working on the
project as I will understand more about what goes onto film posters and how different styles of
posters work well for different movies.
• For my poster I would like to improve on adding a few more effects to maybe the background or
the image as I feel adding some more effects that could be related gives the viewers a better idea
as to what the film is about and also makes the poster look more professional. Another thing on
my poster that I would like to improve Is zooming closer on the image of the samurai and making
him look slightly more realistic and getting rid of random bits of image that are floating around.

25. Contingency
What can go wrong? What can you do if it does?
Taking photos next to a river, someone slips and falls

Save them from drowning
Taking photos on a road, then get hit buy a car
26. Risk Assessment
What could be a risk to you, others or the
equipment?
How can you make sure that doesn’t happen? What
will you do if it does?
31. What did you do?
For the first 3 days of production I only managed to complete my film synopsis. During these three days I had to
rethink parts of my original story and see if these new sections of it would work well with my original idea, Aswell as
the synopsis I also went over the pro forma and filled in a few missing gaps that I left blank.
How did It go?
I thought the first week went fairly well for me that is. I managed to complete the film synopsis and have a synopsis
that I was happy with and one that I thought had plenty of detail as to what the story was about. The writing of the
film synopsis did take a lot longer than I thought it would do which delayed the time in which I had to take photos or
practice making little draft film posters and magazines.
How could it be improved?
I think my first week of production could have been improved because I felt as if I had spent to long on writing my film
synopsis instead of taking more time on my film poster. The film synopsis I feel had more time spent on it rather than
spending that time on designing the film poster.

39. The cover for the game immediately tells us that the game is an adventure playthrough.
We can see this because of what is in the background and how the main character is
dressed. The background is what looks to be some kind of jungle so immediately that
hints that he's exploring something, the way he is dressed and how he looks is very
roughed up which also suggests that he's been in violent situations to maybe get to his
end goal. Plus he's holding a gun which just tells us it is going to be violent.
• This style of game is an adventure in
which the main character Nathan
drake is in search of The infamous
pirate Henry Avery’s lost treasure
and the pirate city of libertalia.
• The graphics within this game are
very detailed and look extremely
realistic. The creators have clearly
taken a lot of time into making the
background look appealing to
adventure game fans.
• How the game works is there are
roughly 22 chapters (missions) in
which you must solve a puzzle or two
and must overcome parkour
obstacles in order to advance to a
new area.
40. • The style of the game INSIDE is a side scroll
concept in which the player must navigate
through very creepy levels avoiding dangers like
packs of dogs and robot sentries.
• What makes this game very intense and
creepy is the idea that there is no background
music or character dialogue, the only noises we
hear are the sounds of the environment as you
travel through it.
• The colour palette of this game is very dark
and bleak. The reason for this is because of the
concept being a horror style game. The only
time bright colours are used is to highlight the
main character and certain parts of the
environment.
• Unlike many other games this one does not
have a HUD (head up display) the only thing
that is visible on screen is your character and
the environment in which you are placed.
INSIDE
41. Shovel knight
• The style of the shovel knight
video game is also a side scroll
concept in which a shovel wielding
adventurer called shovel knight is
set on a quest to rescue his
beloved partner shield knight from
the tower of fate.
• Just from these screenshots of the
gameplay the actual game itself
looks very appealing. Many factors
make the game stand out, one of
these factors is the colour palette
being so bright and exotic.
• Again, from the screenshots we
can see that the characters have a
health bar system, we can also
understand that there is a way in
which the character is able to gain
more health points.
• The graphics for this game aren’t
supposed to be super HD quality
as it is created as an 8 bit pixel
style.
42. Super Mario Bros
• The Super Mario Bros original game falls
within the platformer genre, which itself can
be sub divided into two different genres; Side
scrolling and three dimensional.
• The storyline for the Super Mario Bros game
is a plumber named Mario and his brother
Luigi travel through the mushroom kingdom
to save the princess from the evil bowser.
• The colours for this game are very vibrant
and bright which indicates that the game is
going to be a friendly one for all ages to play.
The graphics for the Mario game are not
mega high quality as the game only came out
in 1985 so at the time this was probably a
never before seen game.
• Instead of a health bar Mario has a point
system in which you must collect as many
points as you can before you complete the
game, aswell as a point system there is also a
time limit which tells us that you have a
certain time to complete each level.
44. Experiments
• For my first animated experiment on
photoshop I just simply created two stick
figures in which one of the figures passed a
boat to the other. The animation starts by
creating the first figure limb by limb then it
moves onto the second figure where the
same process repeats itself. I thought this
short animation went well as it was my first
time creating an animated piece on
photoshop. The part in which I would like to
improve is the end where the figure passes
the boat to the other figure, I would add
movements to the arms and motion to the
boat as it is passing though the air.
45. Experiments
• For my second animation I created a ball
falling from the sky and bouncing off the
ground and continuing to bounce until the end.
The part that makes this animation slightly
better than the first one is that when the ball
hits the ground there is motion on the ball and
is obvious that it bounced off a solid surface. I
thought this animation went better than the
first because of the extra detail added to the
object when it met a surface. The part I would
like to improve on is maybe adding something
else to the background and have that move
aswell as the ball bouncing.
46. Experiments
• For my third experiment I created a city skyline and made it move across as if we
were travelling past the buildings. I thought for this experiment it went even better than
the last two because it took a bit longer to create the road and then adding the buildings
to the backgrounds along with the windows. Also, I thought this experiment went better
because the actual animation itself played a lot smoother and had more detail added to
it to look more professional. This experiment could be improved by potentially adding in
a character onto the road to make it look as if they were travelling past the skyline. I
could use this experiment when making my game demonstration to show how I created
the moving background.
47. Game Summary

53. Research
Movie poster strengths
When researching different types of film posters throughout many generations I came to learn that all posters
have certain eye catching qualities whether that may be the film title or high quality images that are shown on
the poster. I analysed around 5 posters, some were from the same era and others were either more recent or
older when analysing the posters I focused on everything I could that was visible on the poster and gave a
description of it in the most detail I could. The research massively helped when it came to creating my final
movie poster as I learnt to use certain techniques that would make my poster look as real as it could get. For
example I learnt that many film posters use a large bold title that grabs your attention so when I was creating my
poster I used a large title with a good font which was able to look as if it would catch many eyes. Another thing I
did on my poster was I wanted the image to be the most noticeable aspect of the poster so I in fact did that and
used one of my pictures I had taken and it became the main part of the poster.
Video game strengths
When it came to the research of the video game section of the project it helped me massively. Because we had
to create a pixel art style game I wasn’t very familiar with those style of games so when researching different
types of pixel games I learnt many new things about it. I learnt about a certain style of game called side scrolling
which is normally a 2-D style and the game characters tend to move from left to right or sometimes just requires
you to move in one direction. The research helped the final product in the sense that my game is a side scroller
and a 2D style. I took out elements from different games and used them when it came to creating my own game.
For example the health system in a game called shovel knight is heart style health system but the hearts are
circles in that game and for my game the circles are in fact hearts so its much easier to tell what the health
system is.
54. Research
Movie poster weaknesses
Aswell as the strengths to my research there were a few weaknesses that came about. A weakness that came about
when it came to my research was that when going into detail about a certain area of the poster I felt as if I didn’t go
into enough depth and detail about that certain thing. What I could have done better when it came to my research
was that I could have looked at a different variety of film style rather than the one I chose for example I picked
originally a more gangster style approach to my movie however I should have looked at more a sci-fi genre as I think
that could have opened my mind to other aspects of that style.
