Even in the most organised kitchens, accidents can happen, so it is important to know
some basic First Aid

First Aid has three basic steps

• To promote recovery
• To prevent injury
• To protect the patient

Who can administer First Aid ?

Someone who has been trained in first aid, has an up to date first aid certificate and is a
registered first aider

First Aid legislation

• There must be at least one first aid box for every 150 people

• Sterile dressings
•Wound Dressings
•Adhesive (Sticky) plasters
•Sterile cotton wool/eye pad
•Pressure bandages
•Safety pins, scissors, eye bath and tweezers
•Rubber or latex gloves
•Triangular bandages

Simple First Aid
The most common Accidents that happen in catering are
• Kitchen Burns
•Scalds
•Cuts
•Falls
Burns and scalds are caused by Dry Heat and this can be done from
• Hot Pans or the cooker
• Moist heat
•Steaming or boiling
How do we treat a burn or scald?
• Leave under cold running water for at least 10 minuets or until the stinging sensation
stops,
• You must never apply cream as this will seal the heat in and burn even more, for
burns larger than a 10pence you should get medical advice
