foursquare is a location based service. It has various competitors, such as GoWalla.It’s essentially a game where you earn points based on where you go.
How does it work? Check-in      to places Share your experiences with friends Earn points & badges Become the mayor Use the foursquare app to indicate when you’ve arrived at a café, shop or other place in the city  Your friends are notified when you check in somewhere, making it easy to meet up You can share tips about different places e.g. a great restaurant or even a particularly good item on the menu! Every time you check-in somewhere, you get points You also earn badges, for example if you are a regular gym goer If you've been to a place more than anyone else, you'll become "the Mayor"... Many places give you freebies as a result
