- The document summarizes the results of a survey of 20 people about their music preferences and viewing habits.
- The majority of respondents were teenagers, listened to pop music, and preferred watching narrative music videos on their mobile phones.
- Most respondents thought combining concepts and performance in an indie/folk music video was a good idea and said they enjoyed the indie/folk genre.
2. Question 1: What is your Gender?
The first question I asked was concerning the
gender of my audience. I think this is
important just to gain a basic understanding
of the general audience. Out of the 20
people I asked, 10 were male and 10 were
female. I was quite surprised with this result
as I didn’t think they would be evenly
balanced as I handed out the questionnaires
at random. This means that I can design my
video and digipak to appeal to both genders
50%/50%.

My next question was about the age of my
audience. As you can see, the majority
(16/20) of the people I asked were in the
‘Teenager’ category. This means I am going
to try and aim my products at this age
group and now I have the most data from
them. This has confirmed that I should stay
clear of trying to create a product aimed at
children (0) or adults or young adults (both
2) as I do not have much data concerning
their interests therefore I would not be able
to make a good product for them. I am
happy with this result as I originally wanted
to aim my product at a predominantly
teenage audience because that’s who I
think my ideas would appeal to the most.

I then asked another basic question
to do with the occupation of my
audience. My data found that (due to
being predominantly teenagers) most
people were in full time education
(15). This is over half of the people I
asked, therefore I know now that my
target audience will be towards the
full time education sector of the
public. However there is still 4 people
I questioned who were either part
time employed or unemployed, and 1
person being full time employed. This
means I shall also consider this
occupation when deciding on my
potential target audience, however It
does show that I am basically aiming
toward a teenage audience in full
time education.

5 out of the 20 people I asked chose Pop as their favourite music genre. I was not surprised at
this because it is the most ‘mainstream’ genre that is aimed at mass audiences. However my
second most popular was Folk which I was pleased with as this is the genre which I wanted to
create my products for. Therefore I would be appealing to a substantial amount of the audience
I interviewed. From this I know to not create products for the Hip Hop or Country genres as
these are evidently the least popular genres among my audience.

I went on to ask in my questionnaire what the peoples favourite type of music video was. I did
this so I could get an idea of what kind of video to make. As you can see, the most popular kind
of video is narrative, I think this is because people enjoy watching a story develop in a video as it
is more interactive and engaging. The second most popular was narrative/performance hybrid,
so I will consider perhaps including aspects of the performance category in my video to appeal
to my audience. The least popular category was the concept/narrative, perhaps this Is because
they find it too confusing. Another unpopular choice was the combination of all 3, I will not
decide to make my videos either of these types in order to please my audience.
7. Question 5: On which media
platform do you watch music
videos?

I decided to ask this question as it will give
me an idea about what kind of people my
audience are and what technology they use.
This date reveals to me that 35% of my
target audience will be watching my video
on their Mobile Phones, which relates back
to the fact that they are predominantly
teenagers. I could perhaps use this
infromation when designing my digipak to
perhaps include social networking site logos
etc, as I know that this sector of the
audience will appreciate that. From this I
can also see the least popular platform
upon which to watch music videos is a
Tablet, (10%) which I was surprised by as
tablets are becoming increasingly popular.
8. Question 6: What do you think of my idea of combining
aspects of the concept and performance category in
order to create a music video for a folk/indie song?

I decided to ask this question in order to
find out how popular this kind of video
would be among the audience. I was
pleased to see that 80% of the 20 people
I asked thought it was a good idea, which
means that I will go forward with my idea
as it will please the majority of the
people. A small 5% said that it was a bad
idea, I shall take this into account
however I think this is outweighed by the
positive feedback. 15% weren't really
sure, therefore they are the minority that
I will try to ‘win over’ with my video.
9. Question 7: Do you enjoy music of
the indie/ folk genre?
Do you like the Indie/Folk Genre?

I asked this question because I was
interested in what kind of music the
audience will be interested in generally. I
asked specifically about indie/folk as this is
the genre from which the song for my video
is, therefore I needed to know whether it
would be popular or not. As you can see,
75% of the 20 people I asked said they enjoy
the genre, therefore I am pleased because
this means my video will appeal to them
more. As for the 25% who said they were
unsure, I shall, as I have previously
mentioned, try to ‘win them over’ with my
products. I am glad that 0% of the 20 people
said they did not like the genre, this means
it will be a popular video among this
audience.
10. Question 8: Would you enjoy seeing a recurring
theme of love/relationships in a music video?
Would you enjoy seeing the theme of love
50%
in a music video?
30%
Yes Maybe No
20%
I asked this question because I wanted to
construct my video/ products around the
theme of love and relationships
(romantic/friendships) therefore it is
important to find out if my audience will like
this. It is revealed that 50% of my people said
that they would enjoy this theme, which I am
pleased with because that means that If I go
ahead with it I will be pleasing half of my
audience. A following 30% said that ‘maybe’
they would enjoy seeing this, this too is a
positive sign as it will still allow me to use the
themes while keeping the audience happy as I
am hoping my products will win them over.
The remaining 20% who said no, I will take
into account however I will not let this hinder
my creative decisions as it is outweighed by
the more positive feedback.
