2. Who is a designer?
What are his/her duties?
What is his/her importance?
A designer is one who provides feasible solution(s) which satisfy functional,
manufacturing, & service criteria for a give component/system within a
reasonable cost and giving the satisfactory performance over the expected life.
Understand the problem/issue
Generate Ideas to resolve the issues
Check the feasibility of ideas generated
Optimize the feasible solutions taking inputs of various stakeholders
Monitor the component performance in the real world.
Designer is the pioneer in the product cycle.
Designer acts as pivoting point and needs to communicate with all the departments
Designer is the one who converts the opportunities provided by marketing team into
practical usable products
Designer plays a key role in deciding the company’s direction
3. Essential Qualities required for a designer
Problem Understanding
Visualization
Observation
Knowledge
Holistic View
Tool usage
4. Problem Understanding
Many time complete understanding of the problem simplifies the problems and
even makes the half of the problem is solved.
Deep understanding of the problem leads to quick workable solutions rather
than trial and error approach and has the potential to become competitive edge.
Validate the assumptions made before working towards the solution.
Pay close attention to the notes and Tables in the Engineering drawings.
Visualization
Visualization is crucial for the designer’s success
Visualization helps in determining the feasibility of the solution offered.
Engineers working on the drawings/line diagrams/layouts should be able to
visualize the actual components in order to design/offer new or existing solutions
Visualization can be achieved through practise but takes time
5. Observation
Observe how other designers/seniors are approaching the design problems
Observe the components whenever you get a chance viz., plant visits, field visits,
trade fairs etc to get overall system understanding
During any existing component design modifications, observe how the
proposed modifications can impact the system
Observe how the analysts, competitors are improving the designs
Knowledge
Improve your knowledge in the following areas that will come handy
Materials
Assembly Procedures
Manufacturing Methods
Industry Trends
Product Knowledge
6. Holistic View
Holistic View means seeing thing in a broader perspective.
Often modify a component can lead to modifications of other component
Whenever modifying component, ensure the proposed modifications are
acceptable for that component usage in all instances.
Always pay attention how the component/system in scope of work is
contributing to the overall system
Tool Usage
Explore different methods for designing/analyzing the same component
Explore as much commands as possible
Cross verify with the seniors/peers the operations you have utilized
Carry out the sanity checks before handing over the work
7. Success factors
Inquisitiveness
Often ask yourself why
Had I gone through all the needed checks specified
How can I improve my design further
Feel the Design
See the dimensions beyond numbers and make a good feel about them
Visualize how that component in a real world looks and how it can be handled
Teaming
Don’t hesitate to involve peers and Cross Function Team members.
Ask for suggestions from the seniors/peers whenever struck in the project but
respect their time if they are not part of your struck project.
See other’s comments as suggestions rather than issues.
8. Success factors
Design Ownership
Always own the design completely even if you are not involved from the
beginning.
Accept gracefully if any mistakes occur in your designs but don’t repeat them.
Take responsibility and don’t pass the buck to others.
Miscellaneous
Continuously improve your analytical abilities, logical skills and presentation
skills
Don’t work only for the appreciations/rewards.
Put yourself in customer’s shoes
Reduce the reworks
Follow up the component’s performance in the real world you have designed
Dont disclose the sensitive information to others
Enjoy the work always.
Note down the mistakes & learning's after each project and it helps in not
repeating them in the future projects
