Babylon was an ancient city located in modern-day Iraq that was first excavated in 1899 CE. It was mentioned frequently in the Bible in an unfavorable light. The name Babylon is thought to derive from words meaning "Gate of God" or "Gate of the Gods" in Akkadian. It was known for its impressive walls and buildings, as a center of learning and culture, and for developing one of the earliest legal codes which pre-dated Mosaic Law. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were also one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
