Understanding how to make
your game pitch great
A talk by Mike Rose,
that loud British guy from tinyBuild
You could have the greatest video game
ever created, and still no-one would care…
Because the way you describe it is
SHIT
Here’s the first problem:
There’s just too many damn games.
(Seriously, you all need to stop making games.)
So when a good game does come along, it
usually gets lost in a sea of crap.
I don’t know about you, but I do not enjoy
swimming in crap.
Here’s the second problem:
You are terrible at talking about your game.
(Seriously, you are just the worst.)
But if we could solve the second problem…
then maybe that would help solve the first!
(Maybe. Maybe not. But it’s worth a shot.)
Today I’m going to attempt to make you be
not shit at selling your games.
(Seriously, you are just so terrible.)
Before we start…
Some people find it difficult to talk out loud
or try to sell things to other people.
That’s OK!
But I’d suggest you find someone who will!
The golden rules:
1. Be confident
2. Be enthusiastic
Be confident
You know your game
is great, so speak up!
If you believe in your
game, other people
will feed from that.
Show it to people!
Email people!
Tweet people!
If you don’t show
confidence in your
game, who will?
Be enthusiastic
When I hear a developer talk about their
game, and they’re super excited about it, I’m
far more likely to be excited too.
(And let’s be honest, if you aren’t excited by
your own game, you might be making the
wrong game.)
It’s not just what you pitch…
It’s how you pitch it.
Practice pitching things. Anything!
Work out exactly what it is about your game
that is interesting.
You’re making a mobile turn-based strategy
game? So what? I want to know what
makes it different from all the others.
Maybe it’s a special game mechanic?
Maybe it’s the premise/story of the game?
Maybe it’s a very specific part of the game?
You need to work out what makes people
give a crap about your game.
Let’s find out how tinyBuild comes up

match its style.
You need to work out what yours is.
Try a bunch of pitches on different people!
Let’s try applying this to some
of your games.

So you’ve worked out your pitch. Good job.
(Seriously, good job. Go have a beer.)
But there are still plenty of ways you can
screw it up.
If English isn’t your first language, you’ll
want someone to look over your material.
If you’re really not confident with English,
you might want to get someone to handle
it for you.
Screw-up #1
You could really do with taking your game to
some big shows like PAX and Gamescom.
If you can’t get to shows, you’ll need
someone to help you.
Screw-up #2
You need to be pitching and showing your
game to as many press, streamers and
YouTubers as possible.
If you don’t have the time… you guessed it!
You’re going to need some help.
Screw-up #3
PR firms and publishers are pretty popular
right now for plenty of reasons.
If you think screw-ups 1, 2 or 3 will happen
to you, you should really think about
using an agency or a publisher.
The best way to choose one?
Ask other indie developers who have
used them before.
(They’ll tell you pretty quickly who is crap.)

  • 1. You have 10 seconds Understanding how to make your game pitch great A talk by Mike Rose, that loud British guy from tinyBuild
  • 2. You could have the greatest video game ever created, and still no-one would care… Because the way you describe it is SHIT
  • 3. Here’s the first problem: There’s just too many damn games. (Seriously, you all need to stop making games.)
  • 4. So when a good game does come along, it usually gets lost in a sea of crap. I don’t know about you, but I do not enjoy swimming in crap.
  • 5. Here’s the second problem: You are terrible at talking about your game. (Seriously, you are just the worst.)
  • 6. But if we could solve the second problem… then maybe that would help solve the first! (Maybe. Maybe not. But it’s worth a shot.)
  • 7. Today I’m going to attempt to make you be not shit at selling your games. (Seriously, you are just so terrible.)
  • 8. Before we start… Some people find it difficult to talk out loud or try to sell things to other people. That’s OK! But I’d suggest you find someone who will!
  • 9. The golden rules: 1. Be confident 2. Be enthusiastic
  • 10. Be confident You know your game is great, so speak up! If you believe in your game, other people will feed from that. Show it to people! Email people! Tweet people! If you don’t show confidence in your game, who will?
  • 11. Be enthusiastic When I hear a developer talk about their game, and they’re super excited about it, I’m far more likely to be excited too. (And let’s be honest, if you aren’t excited by your own game, you might be making the wrong game.)
  • 12. It’s not just what you pitch… It’s how you pitch it. Practice pitching things. Anything!
  • 13.
  • 14. Work out exactly what it is about your game that is interesting. You’re making a mobile turn-based strategy game? So what? I want to know what makes it different from all the others.
  • 15. Maybe it’s a special game mechanic? Maybe it’s the premise/story of the game? Maybe it’s a very specific part of the game? You need to work out what makes people give a crap about your game.
  • 16. Let’s find out how tinyBuild comes up with pitches for games.
  • 20. Each game needs a very different pitch to match its style. You need to work out what yours is. Try a bunch of pitches on different people!
  • 21. Let’s try applying this to some of your games.
  • 25. So you’ve worked out your pitch. Good job. (Seriously, good job. Go have a beer.) But there are still plenty of ways you can screw it up.
  • 26. If English isn’t your first language, you’ll want someone to look over your material. If you’re really not confident with English, you might want to get someone to handle it for you. Screw-up #1
  • 27. You could really do with taking your game to some big shows like PAX and Gamescom. If you can’t get to shows, you’ll need someone to help you. Screw-up #2
