CONTEXT
 Meaning and importance of yoga.

Meaning and importance of
yoga
 ‘Yuj’ meaning to join & yog, to concentrate
one’s attention on to use & apply. It also
means union. It is the true union of our will
with will of god. (it is unification of atma
with parmatma).
 According to patanjali, “checking the impulses
of mind is yoga”.
 According to Lord Krishna, it has been written
in geeta, “yoga karmau kaushalam”.
Pre-vedic period
 The excavation of mohan
jodaro&harappan indus valley reveals that
yoga was practicing in some forms during
that period the state which were formed in
execution are in various yoga postures.
Vedic period
 Some concept of yoga which were
developed later on are seen in their partial
developed vedas. The word like
yoga&yagik are not used in vedas, clearly
the word yunjate used in rigveda gives the
idea of yoga for sense control.
Epic period
 The two great Indian epic that is
Ramayana & mahabharat are the vital
source of about exercises which were
used during that period. Yoga was very
popular in the age of Ramayana. The
bhagwat geeta deals with the 3 parts of
yoga namely, jola, bhakti, karma. It is an
esence of various ideas & practices of
yoga.
Sutra period
 All the credit goes to patanjali who gives
us the present literary form of yoga in
yoga. Sutra approx in 1471 B.C. the yoga
sutra is divided into your books, he
described 8 limbs- yam, niyams, asanas,
pranayam, prapyahara, dharana,
samadhi, dhyan. Mahaveer was a great
practical yogi of that time.
Smriti period
 Smriti was written till about 100 A.D.
During this period of smriti literature, we
find various changes in idea, beliefs,
worship & customs, pranayam and other
purification technique were used to
occupy a significant place in every ritual of
people.
Medieval period
 During this period Swami Vivekanand
made yoga very popular. Yoganand
continued to spread the knowledge of
yoga. Ramanan and shri Aurobindo also
popularised yoga. And now Baba Ramdev
is putting his endless effect to popularise
yoga all over the world. On the basis of
these evidence it can be said that yoga is
an indian heritage.
