2. Definitions
• Yeast Infection- “Vaginitis is a general term for infections of the
vagina. The most common of these is commonly called a yeast
infection, caused by the fungus Candida albicans.” (Kalumuck)
• Toxic Shock- “A potentially fatal infection causing failure of multiple
organs of the body, most notably associated with tampon use.”
(Seymann)
• Trichomoniasis- A sexually transmitted disease in which motile
Trichomonas vaginalis protozoans become established in the
genitourinary tract of men and women. (Baker)

3. Symptoms
• Yeast infection-when the organism grows at an accelerated rate and
include severe itching, vaginal discharge, and burning upon
urination, abdominal pain, pain during menstruation or sexual
intercourse. (Kalumuck)
• Toxic Shock-high fever, lightheadedness, low blood pressure,
diffuse rash, redness and irritation of eyes, mouth, and vagina,
vomiting, diarrhea, muscle aches, jaundice, kidney failure,
confusion; in strep cases, severe pain and swelling at injury site,
fever, confusion, low blood pressure, tissue death (necrotizing
fasciitis) (Seymann)
• Trichomoniasis-In sexually transmitted form, ranges from
asymptomatic to frothy yellow or green vaginal discharge, urethritis,
Vaginitis, itching, red patches on cervix and vaginal walls (in
women) and frothy or purulent urethral discharge, urethritis, dysuria,
and scrotal pain (in men); in congenital form, placental rupture,
premature birth, low birth weight. (Baker)

4. How do you get it?
• Yeast infection-Endometriosis, hormonal imbalances, infection,
disease, uterine fibroids, sexually transmitted diseases
• Toxic Shock-Bacterial infections with staphylococci (menstrual
cases, associated with tampon use) or streptococci (nonmenstrual
cases, as from injuries, surgical wounds, infections elsewhere in
body)
• Trichomoniasis- The disease is common among people with
multiple sex partners, those who engage in unprotected sex, and
those who seek services at STD clinics.

5. How do you prevent getting it?
• Yeast infection- to not keep it moist.
• Toxic Shock- to not leave a tampon on for that long, so before you
go to sleep.
• Trichmoniasis- to avoid having SEX.

6. How do you treat it?
• Yeast infection-Two medications for yeast infections are available without
a prescription: miconazole and clotrimazole, available under brand names in
most pharmacies.
• Toxic Shock-Intravenous fluids and other medications are administered to
improve the blood pressure, and antibiotics are used to kill the bacteria and
to decrease production of the toxins that they release.
• Trichomoniasis- treated using a single 2-gram dose of the oral medication
metronidazole (Flagyl)

• What do you know about your STDs or general
STDs?
• The STDs I know are HIV and AIDS. I learned
about this in 6th
grade. You get them from
someone who has it. You can only get it when
you have sex. The STDs I got, I know a little
about them. Yeast infection is something to do
with your penis or vagina. Toxic shock is when a
tampon is stuck in a females vagina. The last
one is Tricomoniasis and I don’t know what that
is.
