Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the Trichomonas vaginalis parasite. It typically infects the genital tract, causing vaginitis in women and urethritis in men. While many cases are asymptomatic, it can sometimes cause symptoms like vaginal discharge, itching, irritation and discomfort during sex or urination. Diagnosis involves microscopic examination or culture of vaginal samples. Treatment is usually with the antibiotic metronidazole. Trichomoniasis is common worldwide but exact case numbers are difficult to determine as it often presents without symptoms and diagnostic tests have limited sensitivity.
