2. Introuction
Trichomoniasis (or “trich”) is a very
common sexually transmitted disease
(STD). It is caused by infection with a
protozoan parasite called Trichomonas
vaginalis. Although symptoms of the
disease vary, most people who have the
parasite cannot tell they are infected.
3. GENERAL OBJECTIVE: At the end of the
discussion/ lecture, Students should be
able to acquire knowledge and
demonstrate understanding of
Trichomonas Vaginalis
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the presentation students
should be able to:

transmitted and its prevalence
worldwide.
5. 3.Describe how Trichomonas Vaginalis
causes infection in human host
4.Identify the common symptoms of
Trichomonas Vaginalis infection

Trichomonas Vaginalis infection and its
prevention
6. Definition
Trichomoniasis (or “trich”) is a very
common sexually transmitted disease
(STD). It is caused by infection with a
protozoan parasite called Trichomonas
vaginalis.
7. How Trichomonas Vaginalis is
transmitted
According to CDC (2021), the parasite
passes from an infected person to an
uninfected person during sex.
8. Risk factors
• Unprotected sex
• Multiple sexual partners, and a
history of other STIs.
• Certain demographic factors, such as
age, race, and socioeconomic status, may
also play a role in the risk of infection
9. Transmission cont…..
• In women, the most commonly infected
part of the body is the lower genital tract
(vulva, vagina, cervix, or urethra).
• In men, the most commonly infected
body part is the inside of the penis (urethra).
• During sex, the parasite usually spreads
from a penis to a vagina, or from a vagina to
a penis.
10. • It is not common for the parasite to
infect other body parts, like the hands,
mouth,or anus.
• In summary Trichomonas vaginalis is
primarily transmitted through
• Sexual contact,
• Including vaginal, anal, and oral sex
11. How it causes infection in human
• Trichomonas vaginalis attaches to
the vaginal or urethral epithelium and
causes inflammation and irritation.
• The parasite feeds on host cells and
can disrupt the normal vaginal flora,
leading to an overgrowth of harmful
bacteria
12. The common symptoms
In males
• Itching or irritation inside the penis;
• Burning after urination or
ejaculation;
• Discharge from the penis
13. Women with trichomoniasis may notice:
• Itching, burning, redness or soreness of
the genitals;
• Discomfort with urination
• A change in their vaginal discharge (i.e.,
thin discharge or increased volume) that
can be clear, white, yellowish, or
greenish with an unusual fishy smell
14.
15. The diagnosis of Trichomonas Vaginalis
Diagnosis of Trichomonas vaginalis
infection can be done through;
• Microscopic examination of vaginal or
urethral swabs, culture, or
• Nucleic acid amplification tests.
16. treatment options for Trichomonas
Vaginalis infection
• Trichomoniasis can be treated
with medication (either metronidazole
or tinidazole). These pills are taken by
mouth. It is safe for pregnant women
to take this medication. It is not
recommended to drink alcohol within
24 hours after taking this medication.
17. Treatment cont….
• People who have been treated for
trichomoniasis can get it again. About 1 in 5
people get infected again within 3 months
after receiving treatment.
• To avoid getting reinfected, make sure
that all of your sex partners get treated. Also,
wait 7- 10 days after you and your partner
have been treated to have sex again. Get
checked again if your symptoms come back
18. Prevention
The only way to avoid STDs is to not have
vaginal, anal, or oral sex. If you are
sexually active, you can do the following
things to lower your chances of getting
trichomoniasis:
• Be in a long-term mutually
monogamous relationship with a partner
who has been tested and has negative
STD test results;
• Use latex condoms the right way
19. Prevention cont…..
• Be in a long-term mutually
monogamous relationship with a partner
who has been tested and has negative
STD test results;
• Use latex condoms the right way
every time you have sex. This can lower

During our discussion, we defined the
Trichomonas Vaginalis and its prevalence. We
further diciscussed how the Trichomonas
Vaginalis transmitted and its causes. We also
stressed on the signs and symptoms of
trichomonas Vaginalis. Lastly, we looked at the
risk factors, the treatment and prevention of
Trichomonas Vaginalis. I therefore urge you to
read further on the topic for you to appreciate
