Spina bifida is a birth defect that results from a mistake early in the development of the spinal cord, causing difficulties with feeding, breathing, swallowing, and arm stiffness. There is no known cure for nerve damage from spina bifida, but pediatric neurosurgeons can operate to close openings on the back to prevent further damage and infection. Volunteering at organizations that help people with spina bifida is one way to provide assistance.
